Sony announces 80GB PS3

Sony announces 80GB PS3

Sony has announced an 80GB PS3, which will only be available in South Korea for the foreseeable future.

The South Korean arm of Sony Computer Entertainment has announced an 80GB version of PlayStation 3.

The model is set to cost KWR 518,000 (around £282) before tax and will launch on June 16th. This will be the first PlayStation 3 to launch in South Korea, as there were no 20GB or 60GB models launched in the region.

GamesIndustry.biz managed to speak to a SCEE representative, who stated that "at this moment in time, there are no plans to introduce the 80GB version of PlayStation 3 in Europe."

European consumers still have to pay €599 (£400) including taxes for the 60GB version of the console, which doesn't feature the PS2 chip used for backwards compatibility.

Of course, the European PS3 is still backwards compatible to some extent, but it's surprising to see just how many older games have issues. This is even more annoying when you consider that us Europeans are paying more for less.

It is unclear whether or not the Korean PS3 will include the PS2 chip for almost 100 percent backwards compatibility, but if it does, it's sure to cause a stir in Europe.

It's a very, very simple method to upgrade the HDD. Is the 20Gb out yet in the UK? If you can do without the WiFi it's worth looking at getting it and upgrading the HDD.

I was thinking of modding a PS3 to take a ghetto RAID of regular IDE drives.

Well not really, it's a new launch in S. Korea. Europe won't be getting this anytime soon, if ever. We'll just get a slight price cut, hopefully.

With all the complaining I've read here (about the EU getting the PS3 after the USA) I wonder how the press in Korea has treated this (you got it before they did).

Ewwwwww Ahhhhh an 80GB. Seriously who cares. I guess because Sony's debuting it in S. Korea it makes sense to try and offer the biggest they can, but why anywhere else? Why not just upgrade to a 320GB for the same price??????????? Price drop is what really matters now.....and more games/movies......and Playstation Home....and rumble......ok im gonna stop....

ya know, I have to admit a morbid curiousity in how Sony will dig itself out of the P.R. whole its gotten itself in of late ... this will be interesting

Might I ever so kindly ask the procedure to polishing a turd? The process seems to be eluding me at this point in time.

But other then that, I don't really understand this either. I agree that they should stop with the whole charge the UK double thing. I think it's ridiculous and I don't even live in the UK!

So nice to see so many experts on Sony's financial status and market gain for the console industry since launching only 6 months ago. Hardly a sinking ship, and hardly another PR Mess to be announcing an 80gb in S Korea, which doesn't affect, the NA region, the European Region, or any region for that matter outside the UK. So what is everyone so upset about?
