THQ announced that the PS3 version of Saints Row has been cancelled due to lack of PS3 sales.
THQ sent out a press release today, announcing that the PlayStation 3 version of
Saints Row, the free roaming GTA-alike developed by Volition, has been cancelled. Although the game was confirmed for a spring release earlier for this year, meaning the game must have been close to completion, it seems the publisher has had a change of heart.
The sequel,
Saints Row 2, is still planned for a multi-platform release at some point next year and THQ has confirmed that that title will launch on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 despite the cancellation of the first game.
Rumours abound about why the port has been scrapped when it must have been close to going gold, but THQ CEO Brian Ferrel
reportedly gave the following reasons to analysts:
"We think the most important thing for the Saints Row franchise is to have a simultaneous ship into a larger installed base next year. We think the bigger opportunity is a multiplatform launch."
"Larger installed base next year"? It sounds like he's essentially saying that the PS3 hasn't sold enough units for it to bother shipping a title for it yet. Ouch, that's got to smart Sony.
Will the lack of
Saints Row on the PlayStation 3 in the short term have a negative effect on the PS3's sales, or is the console good enough that it never needed the
Saints Row franchise anyway? Make your minds up and let us know what you think

Exactly. People around other forums, especially the notorious Gamefaqs make it out to be some sort of doomsday announcement because the PS3 doesn't have enough of a usebase. With GTA IV lurking around the corner, the Saint's Row team is simply cutting their losses and pushing ahead with Saint's Row 2, instead of pushing out a port, which will inevitably be overshadowed by the big time franchise of Sand Box titles. It's a smart move, and I'm glad. Besides the Multiplayer online was a lag fest majority of the time, and there was a bad glitch early on that allowed people to wear some of the more expensive items for free; it has since been patched though.
Probably not.
This is just another blow to the PS3. Which is sad, because I still love my PS2 dearly.

If I bought a PS3 it would be for a Linux box / Bluray player / console - in that order.
More like 100% not.
(Xbox version was good, though)
