Xbox 360 Elite really exists

Racks of 360s waiting to be shipped.

Well it seems like all the rumours are true - Microsoft is lining up legions of black Xbox 360s to invade western shores.

The Xbox 360 'Elite', as it has been dubbed, features a 120GB hard drive, HDMI output and a funky matte black finish.

Shots, which appear to have been taken inside a Far Eastern 360 factory with a mobile phone camera, have turned up on the web which all but confirm the console's imminent introduction.

Rumoured specs suggest that almost nothing else about the console is different - there's no HD-DVD drive built-in, and wireless is still going to come from the add-on dongle. Microsoft is sticking to its policy of not bundling in everything to keep the price down and allow people to choose what specification of the console they buy.

It's likely that the 360 Elite will be introduced at a price point above the Premium pack, but at some point this year the non-HDD model will dropp off the price list, the Premium will get a price cut and the Elite will come in at a price similar to the Premium now. The non-HDD model will certainly still be on sale in smaller markets, where disposable income is lower.

Will you be kitting yourself out with an Elite Xbox 360, or have you already picked your next-gen machine? Let us know over in the forums.

I understand why they aren't shipping it with an internal HDVD drive but that kills it for me. I'll wait until they put a HD optical drive in there.

Surely you could mod your own in there?
The only thing that interests me about this is the Black. 120GB is about time they brought out bigger ones, but they still kill you with the price. PS3 has it right with user interchangeable drives of standard size and packaging.

Unless the've made the elite a lot quieter, I could never use it as a movie player anyway, so not having the hdvd inbuilt is not an issue for me. but why haven't they included wireless. it could not cost that much on wholesale scale.
Quote mmorgue 27th March 2007, 13:35
Yep. Nice looking and if it was my *first* 360, I'd go for it. But seeing as how I already have one (which died, shipped off and an *older* model was sent back!) I cant justify it. As mentioned, no hdrom which i think is a bit of a miss to be honest. Bundling it in with the unit would easily justify a higher cost. And its not going to be your avg 12 yo buying it anywaze.

Still, 360 has a long way to go to match the PS3 build quality, in my opinion. Anyhow, good look to it, i like matte black. Tho I'd simply mod mine if i was really that bothered.
Quote bloodcar 27th March 2007, 13:53
Supposedly, the elite unit is just a limited time deal. However, both the premium and core packs are supposed to be receiving the HDMI upgrade later this year as well as the premium getting the larger hard drive. The black colour though will only be for awhile. Expect to keep paying $400 for the premium package for awhile longer, guys.

@Jamie: The HD-DVD is a double edged sword. Microsoft is afraid of packing in HD-DVD drive inside of the 360 because they don't want a dead format in their console. At the same time though, not packing in the HD-DVD is only helping it lose this format war. There's 10,000,000 360s out and about right now, so that's 10million HD-DVD drives with at around the same number of movies that could be in consumers hands right now.
Quote Bursar 27th March 2007, 14:05
@bloodcar: Do you really think so? At around £130 the HD-DVD is a cheap player (given that you've already paid for the console). If the price of the 360 went up by £100 to include the HD-DVD drive, do you still think they'd have sold 10 million consoles? My money would be saying that no, they wouldn't.

To include another SKU with HD-DVD would only add to confusion in the market place. I'd rather see MS drop the core pack altogether and bundle an HDD with every console. I think that would be much more useful to the gamers (who are the primary market for the console).
Quote Speedo 27th March 2007, 14:27
Looks like the same old console, just black with a bigger hard drive.

If build quality is improved, internal cooling is massively improved (and fan noise minimised as a result), dvd-rom quietened down, and reliability increased by a large factor, THEN I would be interested.
Quote calnen 27th March 2007, 14:33
Looks shiny :) And I can see where they're going with the Hard disk - MS have a 20GB drive, then Sony release a 60GB one so MS try to trump them with 120. It'll get funny if they keep this up - who thinks Sony will release a 'special edition' with a 250GB drive within a year? ;)

Man I don't know about you but when I watch movies my 5.1 tends to silence anything

It will only silence the 360 in the loudish action parts, quiet poignant pauses tend to be a bit ruined due to the jet engine whine. If I upped my 5.1 to continually drown out the xbox my downstairs neighbours might complain just a smidgen.

Why would they do that? You can upgrade it yourself without the ridiculous markup in price. Not like the 120GB drive for the 360, $200, a 120GB drive by itself can be had for $80, so if you wanted your XBox 360 normal to have 120GB you have to pay an extra $200 to get it. That puts it in the realm of the PS3 with a 60GB. Plus if you want it to match the PS3 you have to shell out for a HDDVD player, Wireless adaptor etc. So in effect the PS3 becomes cheaper.
Quote kempez 27th March 2007, 14:48
Of course if you buy the HD-DVD drive then that's almost silent. God knows why they can't source a quieter DVD player

One thing the PS3 deffo has going for it is that you hardly hear it

Will their be a cable that will allow me to plug this one into my 30" dell monitor?

Yep there's a few HDMI > DVI cables about

With HDMI remember, and also quite possibly a die shrink, which means a cooler and more efficient CPU, so the heat output would be less. This would mean the 360 is running cooler, so the reliability will be improved, and quite possibly the fans would be quieter.

They've also already brought out new DVD drives, the newer batches of 360s are a lot quieter than the old ones.

It's been reported that these won't have the 65nm CPU in them.

Where's the damn price drop.
Quote Neogumbercules 27th March 2007, 20:56
I'm never gonna use HDMI (in the near future, at least) so I'm not gonna worry about the Elite. I'm kinda pissed about the bigger hard drive though. I remember back at launch I was the only one saying that 20GB's wasn't enough and of course I was called this and that.

$479 (The Xbox 360 Elite) + $200.98 (HD-DVD Add-on w/ shipping @ newegg) = $679.98!!!

Oh, and don't forget $94.98 (Wireless LAN Adaptor w/shipping @ newegg) and $44.98 (Xbox Live Gold 12-month subscription card w/ shipping @ newegg) which would make it $819.94.

PS3 Premium = $599

Besides the 120GB HD, the PS3 offers all of that in one package for almost $220 less.

For all of the people calling the PS3 a rip-off.... explain that...

and you'd be buying a 120GB HD to go with the 120GB hd included in the elite, why?

Oops. So the price would actually be $819.98. Either way, it's still more expensive and you still can't play games at 1080p like the PS3. I'm not a PS3 fanboy by the way. My friend and I play on his 360 pretty much every other night. I am just trying to prove a point.

Again, sorry for the mistake.

I'm going to edit my original if I can, too.

60gig vs. 120 gig, and all of those other things are optional.

Explained.
Quote kempez 27th March 2007, 22:21
Ye microsoft have done well in offering lots of stuff as optional so you dont HAVE to buy it. That's the best way as more people can get their hands on a console, no matter how basic
Quote Gravemind123 27th March 2007, 22:48
Yeah, I don't even have a 1080i TV for my 360 yet or watch HD-DVDs, so I don't want to be paying hundreds extra for features i'll never use. Another explanation is that the Xbox360's HD-DVD drive is USB and can be hooked up to computers, so it's a bit more useful then the built in Blu-Ray of the PS3. I'm completely fine with a normal 360, I feel no reason to upgrade to the elite yet.

Never understood why MS didn't advertise that fact, considering it's such a cheap drive. Would help to get HD DVD drives more penetration into the market.

You really think it's that loud? I was watching an HD-DVD at a friend's house on his 360 and I never noticed any noise from it. In fact, considering how much complaining I've heard about it, I was surprised how quiet it seemed.
Quote orb 28th March 2007, 02:35
The HD-DVD is the silent one, the stock dvd drive is loud, too loud unless you have one of the new drives
Quote inflatable 28th March 2007, 04:15
From what I heard all new Xbox 360's on sale since November 2006 have a much quieter DVD-drive build-in already.. If you have a older one, yeah those are pretty loud.. I have a older noisy one too and have been thinking to replace it with a new quieter one, but I'll wait and see what happens with this whole "elite" plan first..
Quote Gravemind123 28th March 2007, 05:12
I haven't noticed the noise of my DVD drive much, and I have one of the launch day ones. I got a lucky problem free one, and in my opinion the fans make much more noise then the DVD drive, but its not too bad, especially if you just crank the volume a bit.
Quote DougEdey 28th March 2007, 08:09
The 120GB drive is confirmed at $179.99 RRP.

I hope that transfers via a good exchange rate, otherwise I'll import.

I guess I'm just used to my current DVD player, its totally silent, not even a whisper. The 360 is louder just from the fans in the console itself, and I dislike increasing volume to overcome background noise.
Quote themax 28th March 2007, 21:34
It's great that Microsoft gives you options, but I can't help but feel penalized if I don't buy "the package". $180 for a 120gb drive for the 360 is kinda out there. My 2.5" Samsung 100gb was only $100 in store, I know it would be cheaper from newegg or tiger direct. I hate that Microsoft jacks up the price of these "optional" items considerably. $100 for Wireless, $100 for 20gb, $180 for 120gb. I don't want to upgrade because I paid $100 already just for a relatively small harddrive, and NOW they want to give us something larger, only at a huge price hike.
Quote notatoad 28th March 2007, 22:00
i read somewhere that there was a software restriction in the 360's firmware that didn't allow for drives bigger than 20gB, but no restriction that it had to be the microsoft disk. possibly the release of the bigger drive removes that restriction, and you can mod in whatever size disk you want.
Quote Gravemind123 28th March 2007, 22:09
I'm pretty sure you can put in a larger HDD of any kind, as long as you get a converter since the 360's HDD uses SATA power and data on one connector. I'm not sure if there is a size or MS restriction though, but there probably is.

:| Dude, I'm talking about if you were wanting everything on the 360 that the PS3 offered, then the 360 would cost more. That was what I was saying. Of course I know you can buy the bare-bone Elite for less!; hints the reason for me listing all of the optional hardware that would make it "equal" in terms of features. Omg......you're an idiot...
