LEGO MMO revealed

LEGO MMO revealed

LEGO my MMO. Sorry, jokes like this are about to be WAY too common.

When it comes to odd couples, there are a few computer titles that really point out conflicting and unusual worlds that somehow combine to form something surreal, but wonderful. I'm thinking of titles like LEGO Star Wars. For those of you who haven't played it, go grab a copy or try it at a friend's house - though it may not be everyone's cup of tea, it sure is interesting. Unique, even.

It's that exact hybrid that NetDevil is looking to capitalise on with an upcoming LEGO MMO. Yes, that's right - a full MMO based on LEGO characters. Details on what the game will actually contain are sketchy at best, but it's being rumoured to be much like Second Life, only...well, with LEGO. Imagine a game where players each contribute to building an entire world out of LEGO bricks. Every one of you who was ever a kid just secretly wept with joy, didn't ya?

LEGO's spokeswoman Lisbeth Valther Pallesen had this to say about the announcement:

"As children around the world continue to spend more time online we are developing new and engaging ways for them to interact with our brand. The LEGO brand represents construction, creativity and problem solving -- values that compliment the MMOG market. By merging the online world of social interaction with physical play, the LEGO brand is providing new experiences for children, as well as fans. NetDevil's technological capability, openness to work with a large community, and their enthusiasm for the LEGO brand made them a natural partner."

So there you have it - a LEGO MMO. Is this a match made in heaven, or a disaster waiting for a release date? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.

Secretly wept? Timmy, we all know you openly cried and hugged random people on the street.

Sounds good, but then again so did the Matrix MMO, I thought that had to be a winner!
Of course it will all be for the kids, cough cough....
Seriously I will give it a look.

Childhood obesity is a global epidemic in most first-world countries, which is where this game will most likely take off. So shouldn't companies like LEGO be trying to sway children AWAY from computers and such?

And people are wondering why children are getting obese these days.

gg LEGO

Surely the alternative as far as Lego is concerned is sitting on your arse building with real blocks rather than virtual ones...? Its not exactly the athletic pursuit that's going to solve obesity!

It was my 23rd birthday the other day. My sister bought me Meccano and my house mate bought me Lego. LOL.

Lego was the best.

LEGO & MMO is genius.

Netdevil doing it however is worrying. If anyone can screw it they can and probably will.

For those of us clearly living under a rock the past few years, MMO = ? Massively Multiplayer Online something perhaps?

OK - scratch that - Wikipedia to the rescue: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MMO
But, given the alphabet soup that is computing, might I suggest that good journalistic practice would include defining TLAs where they're the main subject of an article.

And @Spode: Mechano Mod!!! Some things just have to be done.

This could be the best combination since LEGO and Star Wars. Maybe they could replace the dying SWG with this LEGO MMO?

it's a company, and comapny's always want to make money, it's the very reason they exist, so no, you can't demand doing anything else than making money form them.
Crazyglue 6th March 2007, 15:30 Quote
ewwww, why do they encourage 12 years olds to invade the internets?

The key is in the execution. I hope this works out right!

isnt the whole idea of lego like hands on building and stuff

so doesnt a computer game kinda not work with that idea ... although atleast games are cheaper, lego is dang expensive

I take it you're quite excited about the prospect of a LEGO MMO? It'll be interesting to see what form the game takes.

This could be quite interesting, if only for how they execute it. I've got to keep an eye on this!

I wonder how they're intending to police the world. This is just asking to be a pedophile playground.
Fophillips 8th March 2007, 19:49 Quote
It better be on the DS.
zero0ne 8th March 2007, 23:49 Quote
Hopefully all the pedophiles will be banned from this game...

It's just scary thinking about that 45 yr old man hanging out in this game solely to get at little kids.
