Casino Royale Blu-ray free to PS3 buyers

H+K 9mm. Muzzled, not flared.

European buyers of the PS3 console will be in with a chance to grab a copy of the latest James Bond film, Casino Royale, on Blu-ray.

In a move designed to get PS3 buyers online with the PlayStation Network, the first 500,000 European PS3 buyers to register with PSN will get a free copy of Bond's escapade in HD.

It will also act as a teaser for PS3 buyers curious about the Blu-ray format, and Sony surely hopes that it will get more people buying into the format on this basis.

The Bond disc is amongst the first high definition discs across either format to be encoded in MPEG-4 AVC - most previous discs have been encoded in DVD-a-like MPEG-2. The discs will obviously be 1080p, for everyone that can enjoy that fine format.

The PS3 is out on March 23rd, and will cost £425. That's substantially more than the £250 Japanese consumers are being charged at the moment. We know Sony wants to win its home territory, but in a global economy, can the market really stand a 40% price difference for the same product? You could practically get a flight to Japan for the difference.

Will you be grabbing a PS3 at launch? Excited about Casino Royale? Or just waiting for the 1080p rip to turn up on BitTorrent? Let us know your thoughts over in the forums.

Nope, never gonna watch it on Blu-ray. Product placement was the thing that pissed me off about that movie.

Agreed, think my girlfriend was even more annoyed as I kept pointing out all the Sony products :p

I've got one on pre-order but I'm not fussed about a free disc "because it's Sony", etc. Agreed as well -- too much product placement. It's becoming more and more in movies and shows and now even games have it.

correction that DVD costs: £175 ;)

Glad to see Sony internal communication is as tight as ever :(

I think they'd have more success if they sold the film and you got a free PS3 instead...although, again according to Jack Tretton, they're not having problems with sales in the US:

I can get any retail buyer on the phone with you and get them to verify that not a single retail location in America where there’s a PlayStation 3 on the shelf for sale. They’ve all been sold in a matter of minutes.
So, you've got the challenge, folks. Find a store with a PS3, and then phone Jack. Easy money!

After playing on the PS3 last week, I wasn't that impressed with it. Perhaps it was the stupid rally game that the thing was running, but its just less than I would have expected. I know early releases to consoles are often weak, and although the amount of debris shown during a crash was nice, I don't think a few extra pieces of flying metal justifies the price, especially with the additional whack Sony have thrown onto the UK and European prices.

Personally I'd buy an 8800GTX, and use the cash I would have saved on a few pints, and laugh with my mates over how console games cost more than for the same game on the PC. :D

All Jack's comments prove is that Sony has failed to get enough stock on shelves. It is NOT a good thing for Sony's market share that consumers can't get their hands on PS3 consoles!

Product placement has been around for years and in your face in films. Sony is no different or worse.

Anyway Casino Royale is a Great film and much better than the spider man 2 I got free for registering my PSP.

Also much better than the King Kong rubbish packaged with the 360 HD player.

But you all bashing freebies. If Nintendo gave a film away free with you registering your Wii you would think its amazing. What do you get for registering your 360 or Wii....nothig, just junk mail and I wish Microsoft will stop emailing me posting spam to me :)

You all complain about not gatting anything free, and when someone does give freebies you moan and slat them. strange lot you are.

Edit:Duh

Have you been following the PS3 stock situation? There is lots of stock on shelves. Look at PA, they reckon Jack owes them around $10000

I saw a number of PS3 consoles sitting on the shelves of Walmart on a recent trip to Florida, also a good supply in the game shops in the malls, however they had no Wii or DSL although the later was a supply problem. I wasnt even considering buying a PS3 however some of the games look very very nice, even if the console is a bigger brick than the xbox

Imho I would buy a Blue Ray RW drive on my PC, the Casino Royale on Blue Ray and start copying

Almost a £200 increase compared to the Japanese; just shows how much mugs us europeans are.
