Sega - no more Dreamcast games

No more GD-ROM. D'oh :o(

Sega has declared that, from February this year, it will no longer be making GD-ROM blank discs, the optical format used by the Dreamcast.

The move ends the tickle of support that still remains for the console. There are two games due out by April this year - Trigger Heart Exelica is due February 22 and Karous is slated for March 8.

The GD-ROM format was also used for Sega's arcade games, using the NAOMI arcade system. Whether or not this will mean the end of NAOMI development, too, is unclear.

However, there are still plenty of ways to get new games onto the Dreamcast - such as by using ROM boards or ROMs burned to a CD. Many Dreamcast games didn't actually use the full 1.2GB capacity of the GD-ROM anyway, hence the fact many of them have since tipped up on pirated CDRs.

Did you have a Dreamcast? Are you still playing it? Let us know your thoughts over in the forums.

Wow i forgot all about the dreamcast years ago. Where are they still selling these games?? must be Japan.

I really didnt think they still made games as it died years ago. Great system though.

Mine still has pride of place by the TV, though it doesn't seem to get on very well with my new plasma. For whatever reason, it's still my favourite console of all time :p.

Anyone else think a "loaded" Dreamcast you sell a bucket load?

Imagine this: Remake the console, but instead of a CD drive (which was inevitably "IDE"), map in a harddisk and emulation instead. Swap out the modem for a 10/100 ethernet (cheap as chips, literally) and load the internal 160GB harddisk with games, then make a download service for rest. Enable some super compression technology like we reivewed on here (cant remember what it was called) to minimise download sizes.

No need for a physical distribution network. They would reap the cost just on the Shenume series. Job done tbh.

My DC still sits under the TV...pretty much just for Soul Calibur (I don't care what anyone else thinks, the original is still the best one!). Ooh, and a spot of Worms Armageddon now and again.

The Dreamcast was (and still is) a fantastic console for homebrew - you could just download games/app/emu's, burn onto disc, and pop them in the system...no mod-chip required.

Interesting idea Bindi, and probably quite doable...the DC does, afaik use WindowsCE as a base for it's OS.

I never realized that games were still being made for the Dreamcast. Are we sure this isn't an article from like 3 years ago that somehow got posted up as a joke?

Cept Sega ****ing rock and Phantom is a vapourware PC. And it already has a load of games and proven hardware, all it would take is some firmware coding and everyone is happy.

Sega would make a MINT. In fact, I should work for sega. /registers bindi-for-sega-ceo.com

I still have my dreamcast with broadband adapter, light guns, arcade sticks and crate loads of games. Of course I have a Japanese version but it does just rock. It runs fine on my LCD TV and sounds great when playing something like BorderDown.

The great thing about the DC was the Shoot-em ups, what other console gave you so many awesome titles. I am still trying to complete my collection of games, I have most of the rare titles including Rez, Cosmic Smash, Mars Matrix, BorderDown LE and Samba De Amigo.

There again i also have a Neo-Geo AES and its just those simple games that are still fun to play.

Just play it Retro.

Quote Stwongbad 23rd January 2007, 02:13
i wasnt sure that sega was still making games for the dreamcast either...
Quote mobius9 23rd January 2007, 10:15
I could have sworn that there was an article years ago that stated sega was dropping the production line of dreamcast, maybe it was just the console. I think we all know how I feel about the DC though : )
Quote Bindibadgi 23rd January 2007, 10:53
It dropped the production of the Console back in.. 02? 03? Some companies still produce games for it in Japan.

Well, there are some enthusiasts that are reviving the MSX computer. And with great success. With support to LAN, HD, DVD and such... After all this, everything is possible!

The Dream cast was the generation of Game Cube, PS2 and XBOX. They got theres out first like the 360 did with the WII and PS3 and was there downfall being too early.

The Sega saturn was the generation with PS1 and N64.

The Dream cast was too early and died early thats all. Sega didnt give it a chance and pulled the plug :( Shame really.

IIRC sega saturn was in the same generation as the PS1.
Quote Bindibadgi 23rd January 2007, 13:36
It was. The mega drive/genesis was the pre-PS1 and the same as the SNES, then there was the N64/PS1/Saturn, which Sega screwed up by launchin the Sega CD, then 32X, then something else...
Quote Blademrk 23rd January 2007, 15:44
but weren't the Sega (Mega) CD and 32X add-ons for the Mega Drive/Genesis?
Quote Cabe 23rd January 2007, 16:18
Still use the DC here, Powerstone and Soul Calibur are the order of the day, as is Sega Rally.

Great little console.

Yeah, I think what Bindi is trying to say is that by the time the Saturn was released, Sega had a bit of a reputation for screwing things up. The Genesis/Megadrive was a great console, but the MegaCD and 32x addons were a huge flop, and when the Saturn finally arrived a lot of peeps figured it'd just be another Sega disaster, and didn't buy into it (but waited a while and bought the PS1 and/or N64 instead).

i still love my little white wonder DC :) ...the only 'new' console system i own actually
Quote Penrhos 24th January 2007, 12:04
This is a bigger problem to those of us that collect Arcade kit.

No more GD-Roms no more Naomi arcade games.

Arcade Versions Owned : Ikaruga, Melty Blood, VF4 FT, OutRun 2.

I bought a DC from Game for £25 iirc, and got all my games 2nd hand from Chipsworld for a few quid each. Best console buy ever IMO.

I actually bought a game (Chu Chu Rocket) for 1p from Dixons. There was a label on it with 1p so I thought I would investigate further. When I went to hand over a £10 note for it the person on the till said dont bother :) The end.
