Xbox Live Gold membership free... forever!

Why pay when you can have it for free? Many gamers believe the service is worth the money.

Ever fancied not paying for your Xbox Live Gold account? One rather fortuitous gamer believes he has stumbled upon a way to allow himself to enable Xbox Live forever without paying.

We spoke to the gamer, who asked to remain anonymous, to see if we could find out more details. Asked why he wasn’t explaining what had happened he replied:

“I've sent Microsoft all the details of what I did. However, I can't tell anyone, I’ve been told by a Microsoft game studio developer if I do Microsoft will be extremely pissed off, if I don’t there won’t be any legal consequences.”

The error, which the young man has posted a video documenting (see below), allows the gamer to have free access to an Xbox Live Gold account. The Xbox Live service allows gamers to play multiplayer and download demos and movies. Currently gamers pay a yearly subscription fee of £40.

The anonymous free rider has posted a video as he wants Microsoft to be aware of the problem and to find a fix. Despite not wanting to say exactly what the problem is he did reveal that it isn’t a loop hole in the site itself and that he believes it comes through the way in which you sign up your account for Xbox Live. He concedes however that it could just be a minor bug and that for whatever reason his account has slipped through the net.

Now Microsoft will face a race against time to stop hackers from cottoning on to what is going on here. If you want to check the video out for yourself click below and then give us your opinions over in the forums.

The person hasn't done a very good job at keeping his game tag hidden. Supposidly it's a fake anyway, some kid in #xbox360 (quakenet) has been staking the claim all yesterday. It's pretty easy to manipulate firefox to have done that and made it look real.

But oh well, if it is real then well played... you saved £40 for a service that is worth much much more.

I'll second that, despite owning neither an Xbox nor a 360.

While I have very little interest in owning either, having their (from what I've consistently heard) excellent online service for free could certainly influence future purchasing from me. Not that them opening it up would make me run out and buy a console, but them charging is certainly one reason why I haven't (though mostly system/game cost and a lack of interest)

TBH it would be easy enough to fake that with couple of entries into your hosts file and some swift work with a html editor.

Good on him for being honest though.

I think the PS Network works fine, at least from what I just played 3 minutes ago in Ridge Racer. I was playing 5 people from Japan, no lag. Granted there is no major means of communication between the lack of a microphone and a language barrier (besides all of the preset greetings and comments you can choose). I still want to see how the chat function works though, it is supposed to be relatively nice from what I have heard.

You'll also notice his service is noted as 'Active'. If you read the 'Active' note, it means the service is enabled. As for what you're looking for, the activation date, was end of October, 2006. The 1 month trial had an expiration date, of January, 2006. This obviously isn't normally possible. I say congrats to the guy that found it out, and hopefully MS will give him some credit for finding the bug, and pay him for his discovery.

All I want to know is how I can "use" this discovery for myself. I also hope Microsoft compensates this gamer for finding a pretty big bug for them.

look now I know that no one in the world could possibly like paying for something that if you did it on a PC instead of a console would be totaly free. i don't think it is realy fair that M$ charges people for a service (which a friend of mine has made an emulator on his computer with the help of the original xbox cd drive to get directly past the live feature and play directly without the live) which should be free, i mean we did pay for the console, we did pay for the games, we did pay for any other crap at outrageous overpricing. so why not give people the fredom to play with eachother with out needing to worry about paying for it. after all this "service" dosent require M$ to do anything special exept let people connect with eachother and its a program that connects them anyway so there is no extra staff needed to do anything but ocationaly update the system.

which brings me to my second point.

if anyone knows a fool proof way of getting xbox live gold for free forever could you please tell me. i got the live silver with the gold trial and thought that what i was doing was so basic that i shouldnt have to pay and it would come with the silver for free (the only difference between live silver and gold i thought was that gold you get M$ points and maby some small extra features eg. better connections to other people with gold) but how M$ was misleading.

as many people say the best things in life are free why not a small feature from a man (bill gate$) who earns about 1000$ every minute.

so if anyone can tell me a way of getting gold for free (this exlueds the twister crap or any kind of 'compleate and offer deal') please email me at it30rivers@hotmail.com

Thanx for your support in the downfall of the evil M$ (Micro$oft)
