No confirmation yet on whether handcuff Wiimotes will be available in shops.
Nintendo will be able to celebrate over Christmas and New Year, as reports emerge that the console has completely sold out across Europe. Nintendo shifted 325,000 consoles in just two days according to
Games Industry. It makes the Wii the fastest selling console in European history.
Nintendo is now promising to restock the shelves as soon as possible, so those who missed out on grabbing the console will not be too disappointed for long. Nintendo marketing director Laurent Fischer said:
"For those who were unable to buy Wii during the launch weekend, rest assured more stock is already on its way. We are doing everything possible to ensure that a steady supply of Wii units is shipped to stores across Europe throughout December and into 2007."
The biggest selling game was
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, with over 70 percent of all Wii owners picking up the game. The second most popular game was Wii Play – probably because it came bundled with that necessary second Wii mote. The Wii launch has seen similar successes worldwide and hasn’t been plagued by the problems that both Microsoft and Sony faced when launching their more powerful machines.
Sony has, however, hit back at the Wii.
1up is reporting that Dave Karraker, senior director of corporate communications at Sony, still believes the Playstation fans won’t settle for the Wii. He said:
"We feel very confident that the PlayStation fan is going to wait until they can get a PlayStation 3. If they do pick up a Wii, it's as more of a novelty."
One gamer Karraker won’t be getting his hands on is the lunatic Wii fan pictured to the right. Responding to all of the flying Wii motes and snapped control straps this man has substituted his own strap for a police style handcuff. Kind of kinky, in a geeky sort of way. Fortunately, because it’s not a real handcuff (he bought it from an adult store) if he loses the key there is a safety release button.
Would you buy a Wiimote with handcuffs? Let us know in the
forums.
Seems like a few places are beginning to get them back in stock.
Wftw!
For the Wii!
On a side note though I'm pretty pleased that Nintendo have done pretty well.
It goes to show the units popularity, however, ofcourse this could be sucess off the back of the DS' popularity or just the geeks/fanboys.
That and alot of people possibly picked it up just for Zelda.
I would buy one myself but I fear it will sit under the TV unused once the novelty had worn off and I need the money for my DX10 PC early next year anyway.
Seems like a great product for after the pub though and it also seems to be more popular with the ladies than the other consoles
I'm pretty sure that's metal. My concern would be the plastic case of the wiimote coming apart where the chain is attached.
Contrast that with the PoS3 launch where most people bought no games because it was destined for eBay. People bought the Wii because they want to play it, people bought the PoS3 to make a quick buck. Telling, no? :|
[EDIT] and the DS is doing pretty well too; just over half-a-million units sold in Europe last week!
Do you mean you Won a wii?
Or is it that you want a wii?
<< easily confused ;)
I want one wii!
<< Tired
*sorry, couldn't resist *
Aggies :o
And they are metal handcuffs, dont ask me how I know.
anyways this commercial sums it up http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9136575504838642038&q=wii+commercial
law of supply and demand, the ps3 was in short supply for high demand which dictated a high market price, my japanese friends sister bought one in japan to sell. What's telling is that people with more money than sense bought them for 1.5K on ebay. not sure what the hot launch titles for ps3 are
However, after trying the PS3 demo machine in our local Wal-Mart, and having it hard lock not 30 seconds into a game, I don't think I'll be getting one.
I wouldn't see the real benefit anyways, what with only having an SD TV.
In my opinion the point with consoles is to get the highest quality image to games with a low(er) price.. Now I'm definitely not an expert but the screenshots I've seen from Wii games (CoD3 for example) are simply terrible.
Keeping this mind I'd say most of the Wii-buyers are HC-Nintendofans who have played with Nintendos all Mario/Zelda games for the last 10 years and so want also the newest console. Other half of the buyers are just interested in the odd remote :D
(disclaimer: this is MY opinion.)
OMG proxess wants to play with my wii!!!! :p
i wish i had the money to buy a wii :( ........
starting the wii fund!!..... proxess you will play with it so you must invest!!! :p
Most of the people I've read about with a Wii are NOT hardcore Nintendo fans. They've already sold over a million units, right? I personally grew up with a Sega Genesis. I did eventually get a SNES, but I think the PS was out by then, which I also owned. I ended up with a PS2 as well, almost entirely for FFX (and I never ended up with many games for it; I think they're all Square-Enix games as well). Of course, by then I was mostly won over by PC gaming. I've never been a big fan of the handhelds, though I did own both a GBC and GBA, once again, only for a couple games.
I've NEVER bought a console for its graphics, nor brand loyalty (not to the console brand, at least). It's always been about the games and gameplay for me.
Yes, COD3 looks pretty bad in screenshots. I don't know about how it is in person, not owning it (I'll find out at Xmas though, as my brother is getting it along with his own Wii). Zelda looks great IMO. Sure, it's not Far Cry at 1080p with HDR and 4xAA, but I thought that was a great game because of the gameplay, the graphics were a bonus. When people have come into my room while I'm playing it, they generally seem fairly impressed with the graphics. TBH, I was quite surprised by their reaction in that department - coming from massively HD PC games with ubertextures, the Wii's graphics certainly are nothing to boast about in my mind. But to the casual gamer, they're apparently impressive. Then they played the thing a bit... we'd cheer on the player the more he got into it, and he was obviously having a blast.
In fact, the only people I've heard that really even cared about the graphics on the PS3 and 360 were those that love nothing more than to shell out year after year for the same sports tripe from EA. Considering the hype, I was supremely disappointed with the PS3's graphics when I saw them in person, and I wasn't impressed with the 360 until I saw Gears of War. I question how much fun people can be having in a game when they're impressed by the sweat glistening on the basketball players (which, in any case, looked more like a bad shine than anything else to me).
I think you'll end up finding quite a few hacker-types who go out there and just buy a remote, thanks to its Bluetoothiness. I've used it as a mouse on my Mac, and it's pretty cool, even for being in a sort of pre-Alpha state. But that's a minority.
Ninty was shooting for awesome gameplay with the Wii, and they delivered. I've met a single person who's used one and didn't love it, in comparison to the endless disappointment stories I've read/heard about the PS3. I haven't seen much on the 360 recently, but I've seen it literally chew up several discs where I worked, and I know that it wasn't a unique case.
How can you comment on a console when you, by default, hate them all? They offer a varied experience to many people, moreso now Nintendo have stepped away from the standard remote. I assume you cannot play without a keyboard and mouse?
if for some reason you dont like not using a keyboard and mouse then thats not exactly a reason to just say everything made for consoles is crap, also a keyboard and mouse isnt exactly a great gaming control system is it, youve got something thats essentially a typrwriter and then a pointing device. i cant play anything on the keyboard and mouse, i pretty much play every pc game with an xbox 360 controller, it doesnt make me hate pc's
