PSP gets version 3 firmware

PSP gets version 3 firmware

The PSP has been dead recently for new software.

The version 3 firmware update for the PlayStation Portable has been posted to Sony's Japanese site, with a US and European update expected to follow swiftly.

The new firmware adds a number of things to the recently-neglected gaming device. The biggest news is the support for the PlayStation Network, Sony's online service. This allows gamers to pay for and download PSOne games - including legends such as the original Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy VII.

However, in a spectacular disappointment, downloading of these retro titles is only available to those who have a PS3, due to the way the PSNetwork works. Stand-alone download functionality is rumoured, but not confirmed.

Remote Play allows you to stream video from the PS3 to the PSP. There is support for the forthcoming camera and also a tweak to finally allow you to stop UMD games from starting as soon as you put them in the drive.

Whilst PS3 owners will be delighted at the ability to take a new library of retro games with them on the go, the other 99% of PSP gamers will no doubt be gutted at the lack of support for them. The PSP has had a dearth of decent games over the last year, and decent retro support was finally something to get excited about - but now that's gone, too.

We can only hope that Sony adds standalone retro functionality sooner rather than later. Let us know your thoughts over in the forums.

I still think PSP is lightyears in front of the DS, if you have a 1.5 FW that is

well to be honest I kicked console game and the psp for over a year, happens when you get a girlfriend lol and even after we broke up, I didnt have a need or want to play consols games and its been about 4 months since I broke up with my ex and a few days back I finally dusted off my PSP updated it and cleaned up the system and started using it again, it is a nice system and game selection does need to get better becuase it has so much potential but ya there is so much that system could do if sony would just get on the ball and start allowing a little more free rein for users to do things to the psp instead of having to put a homebrew OS on it, which I havent been impressed by those as of yet but havent looked into them for some time so maybe they have gotten better. But anyhow I do hope that they do ad standalone support,

Yes people still have them. 20 games??? Oh come and dont be so arrogant. There are loads of games out and plenty out each month. Cant wait for Bomberman which is going to multiplay link up with only 1 UMD game required for 4 PSP owners. Also the Metal Slug series is going to be ace.

There are so many functions that the PSP can do which makes Nintendo Fanboys jealous. How can you say the PSP is dead and negleted??? Its still selling and firmware updates every so often adding more functions to a great console.

They charge for a web browser for the DS. I would and do not use a web browser on any hand held console as its pointless so Id expect it to be free like with the PSP.

Doenst bother me if you need a PS3 to download PS1 games. Rummers are that europe will be able to download the games through PSP shop as its already set up for taking payment for downloads. Its expected to be the japanese that need a PS3 to download games not Europe.

Still its another great addon. Its just getting better.

hmmm FFVII on the PSP...
That could just make me charge it up again, until then my DS Lite keeps me entertained on the move.

Thats utter bs. For a start in europe we wont be able to walk into a shop and buy a ps3 till at least July'ish...secondly you're telling me to get full functionality on one console i need to buy another £425 console...sony are becoming royale *******s. Disgraceful.

P.S- Theres plenty decent games on the psp that aren't just gimmicks like some other portable devices ;) Tekken, Daxter, Locoroco, kill zone, burnout, lumines, Syphon filter, wipeout, hot shots, bomberman, etc. Soon you will get mgs portable ops and gt too. Everyone just loves to hate sony right now and lick nintendo's butt.

I too am quite fed up with Sony's support for the PSP. I bought one in July, thinking it would be great to have on holidays while on the beach...and it was, but since I came back home, I have played no more than a 1-2 hours total. And that's since August.

There are few games, and even less than make some kind of good use of the PSP capabilities. No, Sony... I don't want to play the same games I have for the PS2 in the PSP. I really see no point in playing at home, when you can play more or less the same games in a TV and with a better pad.

I'm trying to sell it, and perhaps, I'll get a DS for my girl. At least, it's a different type of gameplay. If not, I'm going to finally dwell into "homebrew" software and try to donwgrade my firmware to something that works with emulators...perhaps I'll get to use it a bit more then.

Does anybody know what's the state of firmwares? I have 2.01 and when I got it, there was no way of downgrading it and I couldn't make any emulator run. Will I have more luck now?

This is a big part of why I got a PSP in the first place! Ive been waiting for AGES for anything Final Fantasy to come along, so to have this carrot dangled in front of me and then see it snatched away is really frustrating.

Sony have no idea do they?!

you can downgrade, or install a custom firmware (2.71 se-b or c ) look at psp-hacks.com (posting from 1.5 w/ devhook)

It has got to be said that I've enjoyed playing on my DS more than my PSP, but saying that, I haven't played on either for the last couple of months.

such as?

All I can think of is the web browser, MP3 playback and videos (on a non-hacked PSP) none of which interest me in a portable gaming console (but even then, you can buy modules for the DS/GBA that allow some of that functionallity).

For me it's all about the games, and at the moment the DS does seem to have more games that I'm interested in having a look at.

Game downloads (to get back on topic) would have added something to the PSP that might have tempted a lot of users back (I know there are games on the PS1's back catalogue that I would love to play, but never got around to getting and are now extremely hard to find) but needing to go through the PS3 to download them just seems to me like Sony are shooting themselves in the foot (I know there are a lot of gamers out there who aren't going to bother getting a PS3 unless it gets a severe price drop, myself included)

Eh? Europe release isn't until January 8th, then there's the crappy shortages that always happen with a new release.

OMG I love the new firmware, just installed 3.01 onto my PSP yes you do need a PS3 to link to download PS1 games at least thats what it looks like right now and OMG the visual player added to music is sooo freaking sweet, I LOVE IT ^^

Also they added support for a digital camera. does anyone have info on the camera and on how high the mega pixels is? I hoping 5mp at least would be awesome.

EDIT: The camera is only 1.3mp thats really on the low end but they may release higher res version later I hope but the ability to record movies too is nice also they may use the camera for a type of eyetoys not sure how usefull that would be seeing how you hold the psp in your hands lol

Umm as it was the PS3 was already under prices on average sony is losing anywhere from 160.00us to 200.00us per PS3 system sold, same thing happened to MS when they started selling the Xbox but they expect to make all that back in the coming months and with game royalties so as for the pricing dropping anytime soon well dont hold your breath lol
