Microsoft has revealed that the Xbox 360 will soon be getting a software upgrade to enable 1080p output.

Speaking at the pre-show press conference for the Tokyo Games Show, MS said that the upgrade will enable HD-DVD playback at 1080p. The 360 currently supports 720p and 1080i.

There's no word yet on whether any games will be supporting the resolution natively, however. Existing and forthcoming games will support upscaling.

Shane Kim, one of Redmond's many Xbox marketing gurus, once again confirmed that the HD-DVD drive will not be included in the Xbox internally, and will only be an external drive.

Sony has been pushing 1080p output as one of the top features of PlayStation 3, saying that Microsoft wasn't truly supporting high definition by leaving out this top-end output. It seems that Sony now has one less bullet point to coo about.

If the whole p/i/1080/720 thing has got your head in a spin, check out this guide to high definition standards over at TrustedReviews. We'd suggest that 1080p output isn't exactly going to set the world on fire, but it is another notch in the 360's belt.

What do you think about the 360's HD output? Do you have a native 1080p screen? Let us know your thoughts over in the forums.
