An article has popped up over on the BBC website that considers the idea of creating an online encyclopaedia for video gaming history that will be very similar in style to Wikipedia.

The developers, who are based in Pittsburgh Carnegie Mellon University, hope that the Game Innovation Database (GIDb) will helps gamers understand the history of video gaming a little better. Professor Schell had this to say about the project:

"We have created the Game Innovation Database in order to create a historical record of which innovations appeared when, and why they are important. So many videogame innovations have occurred so fast that there is a danger that many fascinating and important innovations will be forgotten."

As well as offering nostalgic gamers a chance to look back at the ‘good old days’, the creators of the website hope that games producers will use the encyclopaedia when developing new games:

“This database will be able to serve as a historical record and a teaching tool, as well as a helpful resource for designers who want to study what has come before."

You can check out the database at GameInnovation.org. Despite having four hundred entries already the site is looking for more contributions, so why not head over there and stick in something about your favourite game?

With gaming increasingly becoming part of every day culture do you think this encyclopaedic style venture will be useful? Let us know in the forums.
