E3 2006: news, videos and demos coming ti Xbox Live Marketplace

The biggest games tradeshow of the year, the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), is just 14 days away but don't panic if you can't afford the airfare to Los Angeles: Microsoft will attempt to bring the show floor into your living room via Xbox Live Marketplace.

The ambitious plan was revealed by Peter Moore, Microsoft's Corporate V.P. for Interactive Entertainment Business, Entertainment and Devices Division ie Xbox, in an pre-E3 chat posted on Xbox.com.

"It is our goal to bring E3 home to Xbox Live members as best we can, all the videos and the news as quickly as possible," Moore said. "We will give you the flavor of what's going on, on the show floor and some of the stuff that we are showing and debuting here."

E3 week - Wednesday 10th to Friday 12th May - will be a real test for Microsoft's digital distribution network. In addition to the normal level of multiplayer games and trailer downloads from existing subscribers (who numbered over 2 million in July 2005), they expect many hardcore gamers to remain logged on continually downloading fresh E3 content as it is made available via Xbox Live Marketplace.

Moore dismisses this as a significant issue. "If we can get through Halo 2, which we did, then I think we can get through anything," he said. Famous last words. Fingers crossed that they have enough bandwidth to cope with demand.

Will you be using your Xbox to check out the latest E3 news? Or will bit-tech Editor Wil Harris' reports live from the show floor be of greater interest? Post your most anticipated E3 announcements in our News Discussion forum.
