The Yak is back - Jeff Minter interview

Neon in action.

The Guardian's gaming blog has a great interview with the man who has been a hero to many over the years, Jeff Minter.

For those of you old enough to remember, Minter created some stonking games over the past two decades, including the seminal Tempest 200 and my Atari favourite, Llamatron.

For those of you unaware, Minter has written a light synthesizer that will be part of the music playback capabilities of the Xbox 360 - the 'Neon' homepage is here.

He mentions that he's been using the PowerMac dev kits to create the software so far, which are running at about 30% of the power of the final hardware.

Neon will be user-controllable using all four joypads, creative a collaborative lightshow.

However, he admitted that, since Neon would be part of the dashboard, the visible OS for the 360, he couldn't hog too many system resources!

Confirmed is the fact that the 360 will play audio from any audio source, including an iPod.

If there wasn't enough to make you excited about the 360 already... Yak!

Oh, and...er... Yak!
