Microsoft has suspended its Windows 10 Insider Preview builds 'temporarily,' as the company works to make a Release To Manufacturing (RTM) version of the operating system ready for launch on the 29th.

The next iteration in Microsoft's best-selling Windows operating system family, Windows 10 is due to launch on the 29th of July in retail, OEM, and free upgrade forms. The company has been offering a free technical preview version of the platform to members of its free Windows Insiders programme, but has now warned that anyone who has not yet upgraded to the latest Insider Preview release - Build 10166 - will be stuck on their current version until a retail-ready build can be produced.

'We’re only a couple of weeks away now from our public release of Windows 10, and we’re preparing for the world to begin the upgrade process,' Microsoft's Gabe Aul explained in a blog post update late yesterday. 'Windows Insiders have been the first to see our work on Windows 10 at every stage. Now you will also be the first to get a build flighted to you using the channels that we’ll use for targeting and deploying to PCs for our staged rollout.

'We’re suspending the availability of Windows 10 builds briefly while we prepare for that, and the next build that we flight to you will be delivered using the production channels. Starting tomorrow, we will also not be delivering any additional ISOs at this point as we really need Insiders to be using, stressing, and validating our distribution and upgrade processes. We’ll make ISOs available again in the future, but for now we ask you to upgrade your current build via Windows Update once the next build is released.
'

The switch to a new release ring means that the most recent Windows 10 releases - Build 10162 and 10166 - have been removed from Windows Update, while the latest ISO image release - Build 10162 - has been removed from the download site. More importantly, pre-release keys obtained through the Windows Insider programme will no longer activate builds.

A new release is to follow at an as-yet unspecified time, and is expected to be functionally identical to the final Release To Manufacturing build - which, at the time of writing, was reportedly still not ready for provision to Microsoft's OEM partners. In a since-deleted article, Bloomberg quoted Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi as stating that computers with Windows 10 pre-installed would be available 'very soon after the 29th,' rather than at launch, while Hewlett Packard's PC division confirmed this week that it would not have Windows 10 machines ready until at least August.
