Gaming Setup Photo Competition Winners Announced

Gaming Setup Photo Competition Winners Announced

DFS

Just over a month ago we ran a photo competition in association with DFS to see just what sort of spaces you all call your gaming home, and now the results are in.

We've certainly seen some interesting setups, from the megabucks magnificent to the monstrously messy, and it was a task to pick out just which deserved the top prize. But we have now decided...

Winner
of the £500 Amazon gift voucher is Alex from Berkshire who's gaming garage simply ticked too many boxes to ignore. Gaming PC, console and TV, beer fridge, shelves of gaming goodies and even some truly bonkers looking speakers.

What's more we like that none of this is big budget stuff, just good clever use of space and a few box shelves. Congratulations Alex!

Now go get some photography and modding lessons. ;)

Nabbing themselves a £20 Amazon voucher each are our five runners up (yes, we couldn't resist adding one more than originally planned), each of which we think perfectly represents the many varied readers of Bit-Tech.

First up is this superbly stylish and minimalist setup from Jonathan from London. We love the tidy layout, the effort involved in the annotation and that there's even a bit of modding involved. Well done Jonathan.

Next we have this simple but brilliant homage to Star Wars from Sarah in Wolverhampton. Sure there's no PC in sight but there is a lightsaber so we aren't going to argue! We'll leave you guys to insert the helmet jokes.

Flipping things right round we have this wonderfully 'Heath Robinson' effort from Nadir in Surrey. While we're not so sure about the stains on the walls, we love the gaffer tape-afixed mousemat, the plastic tablecloth and of course the reuse of a case as a storage area for mini-arcade machines and other paraphernalia. Bonkers but brilliant.

Similarly making do is Eric in North Ayrshire whose modding has extended to a custom sound system built from a car stereo head unit and two 6x9in speakers. We also like to think the boiler in the background has something to do with the whole thing - hooks into the water loop maybe? Oh, and then of course there are the lava lamps!

Finally we have Ray from Blackpool whose tidy water-cooled PC, trio of monitors and stuffed-toy Cookie Monster has just about everything we'd want in our gaming PC setup.

Nice offer! So what you're saying is that those who have the cash to throw away on a ludicrously over-specced and over-furnished setup can win even more money than they already have...

..where as those who might NEED a £500 voucher...those with a regular PC setup...basically have no chance.

Sweet :/

As mentioned, we're not just looking for fancy but something interesting. Time and effort can overcome lack of funds. Moreover, it's a bit like complaining that the snazziest mods win mod of the year...

So we think the PC and single monitor is going to top a PC-in-a-desk (as per the article photo) or a dedicated room with surround, gaming chairs etc etc.

I think not. Let's be honest...this "competition" is a joke. People can't "have a go" at this. You're either in the winning category already, or you're not, and have pretty much no chance to be either. Nice "competition".

I would add, also, that if DFS really wanted anything either than cheap advertising (£500 giveaway for an article on bit-tech is a bargain) - if they wanted to do some actual market research - then they'd do a SURVEY of bit-tech readers and all of those that contributed could go into a draw for the prize. Then we can all get involved, instead of just the top 1 or 2% of your readership.
lacuna 28th June 2013, 14:05 Quote
I have to agree with the above. I understand the purpose of the market research and the incentive to submit an entry is nice but determining the winner based on 'whose is best' has already put off 95% of the readership from even applying. Clearly it is too late now but what you should have done is set the criteria for eligble entries (e.g. must be a room, must involve a gaming device, must agree to be featured on site etc.) and then just choose at random. DFS get their market research and everybody has a fair chance of winning.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this a sight populated by modders? By people that value aesthetics, tidiness, optimal performance, gaming, pro audio, quiet, etc. It's the application of these motivations to your whole gaming setup that we'd like to see. Some will have opted for big sofas and a massive telly, others will have carefully eeked out every drop of efficiency from their modest means. We'll look on both equally.
Lance 28th June 2013, 15:45 Quote
Come on lads. Get behind this, a photo comp it always a good time.

Mine might not be the best looking, but its still pretty useful. I might have to buy some acrylic to make it presentable, as currently its using MDF to hold it together.

Or some would still be aspiring to achieve your "elitist" view whilst perching a monitor on a coffee table in a cramped and busy kitchen (I've seen some posted on here).

It would have been better to of said "Show us what ya got, and we'll randomly pick one" and not mention your bias: "Of course special consideration will be given to those who’ve incorporated a bit of modding into their system"

I've modded my system, I taped the monitor to the table to stop it falling off when the dog runs past. ;)

That is technically correct, but while we may value those properties they may be simply aspirational to some.

I, for example, have an 7yr old computer, bought for £400ish...My desk is a £20 ikea kitchen worktop, with 2 £6 ikea table legs on one side, and a cheap argos filing cabinet on the other.

It isn't aesthetically pleasing, tidy, optimal, suitable for gaming or pro audio, or quiet - Leaving me ineligible for the competition, and I'm sure many are in the same boat.

I think its a great competition. Though that sofa is about £2,300 so don't think you can buy that with the winnings. However, I'm sure there's plenty of other great sofas for around the prize price.

Good luck

I built a pretty sweet desk out of a metal door I got at a salvage yard. I also built my own speakers. I may have a triple monitor setup, but the rest has been DIY. I think I might have a pretty decent chance of winning too . . . if I didn't live in the U.S.

Bummer. I would love £500 at amazon.

Some great entries so far guys - keep 'em coming.

I've changed the main article wording to reflect the fact that we're not just looking for the biggest telly here but just something that catches our eye. So far we've seen some clever uses of gaffer tape and a fresh take on reusing an old case, plus some super tidy setups, all of which will be in with a chance.

Nor did I. It wasn't a big prize - a GoG voucher, but the code didn't work, emails fell on deaf ears, and I couldn't be bothered chasing it further.

I have no problem with the DFS article, it's far less intrusive than those full screen pop-up ads we've had.

We're free to ignore it, as we could a tech article on something outside our interest. Get over it.

Amazon in the UK have supplied dried goods for a long time. I worked in the Swansea warehouse for 6 months a couple of years ago, and you'd be surprised at the vast amount of things like washing powder or nappies that we shipped, The massive range of goods that Amazon sells is mind-boggling - including sofas!

So basically you've got a competition awarding those with either nice, desirable, crazy or humorous setups. This effectively excludes so many of your readership who have 'average' setups, who by your own words have no chance of winning as they are not "intriguing, impressive or just plain weird".

Next time, how about a competition open to everyone?

I think many are assuming the winner will be someone who has had the time and money to devote to their rigs, but maybe my comments and those of others will change that.

It would be nice to see a winner who hasn't spent ££££ on their rig and its mods.

It is open to everyone (well in the UK anyway). Yes it is likely to award those that have clearly taken some time and effort over their rigs, but that's the point - it ties in nicely with the site's modding community.

See the couple of examples we've added to the article. Neither are megabucks setups but would easily be in with a chance. I'm also put in mind of a couple I knew that used to have their screens positioned next to each other but facing opposite directions so they could see each other while playing, and no doubt play footsie under the table. And trust me, their setup was not expensive.

You can wire up the car speakers directly to your PC easily but you will not get much sound out of it, thats why I used the spare car stereo I had lying around. I wasn't gettin used so i thought it would be good for a stereo system in the house B)
