Comixology giving away 700 free Marvel comics

From Avengers to X-Men, Comixology is offering a vast range of free Marvel comics.

Update: Due to massive demand this promotion is currently unavailable. See below for an open letter from Comixology CEO David Steinberger for further explanation.

Marvel has announced it is giving away 700 different first issue comics via Comixology, the digital comic distribution service.

The promotion that is being run in conjunction with the technology and culture festival, South by South West (SXSW), will run for the next 40 hours until 11pm EST, or 4am GMT on Wednesday.

The comics can be downloaded to be read using a web browser or via the Comixology iOS and Android apps. A user account is required to use the service but setup is free and once signed up the free comics will be available for as long as you remain a member.

The full list of available comics can be found on the Comixology website but currently it is down due to high demand. Instead the mobile apps are currently offering a better experience.

Available comics include 118 X-men, 56 Spiderman, 46 Avengers, 17 Hulk and 11 Fantastic Four issues.

Do you know your comics? If so, please do let us all know which of the 700 to choose from!

Open letter from David Steinberger, Comixology CEO:
To our customers:

It’s been a whirlwind weekend, and we’re fresh from SXSW where Marvel Comics launched their Marvel #1 promotion featuring over 700 free comics distributed via our platform.

We expected a high degree of excitement for the Marvel initiative – and had believed ourselves prepared – but unfortunately we became overwhelmed by the immense response. We’re still struggling to keep our systems up.

The result is that you aren’t getting your comics when and where you want.

We don’t like letting you down. Our teams are working around the clock to resolve these issues so that you can have the experience you’ve come to expect.

To that end, we’re pausing the Marvel Comics #1 promotion for the time being. For those of you that want to take advantage of the offer – you will get your comics! Until we are able to reinstate this program in our systems, please click here and fill out this simple form, so you can be informed as soon as there is an update.

We’ll be communicating with you as often as we can and deeply appreciate the outpouring of support we’ve seen from our customers while we right the ship.

David Steinberger
CEO and co-founder

First issue free, pay for the rest. Standard marketing tactics in full force.

I'll be at the front of the queue ;)
