A big thank you to Corsair for the prize support and being good sports on the night
This is just a quick post to say a big thank you to all those that attended the first ever Custom PC and bit-tech Pub Quiz last night and making it such a great occasion.
On what turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far, it was humbling to see the room filled with so many friendly faces, even if we did then repay your attendance with one of the most fiendishly difficult quizzes ever to be set in the history of geekdom.
We’d also like to give a big thank you to sponsors Corsair - without them the night simply wouldn’t have been possible and their prize support meant many of you left with arms full of booty. A special mention also to Paradox Interactive for making sure everyone who attended walked away with a free copy of Magicka.
Below is a small selection of hastily edited photos - there will be more, and a full blow by blow account soon. We’ll also be posting up some of the best memes that were created in our make a meme round, just let us recover from the evening’s merriment first eh.
All that’s left to say is a big congratulations to the overall winners, Team Epic LAN, who each walked away with a Corsair Vengeance 2000 headset, Corsair K60 keyboard, Corsair M60 mouse, Custom PC subscription, commemorative winners cheesecake and the frankly priceless Golden Graphics Card winner’s trophy (don’t break it, yeah, we’ll need it back for the next one).
They were closely followed by the magnificently titled Our Cheesecake Brings All the Geeks to the Yard team, who bagged a Corsair K60 mouse and K60 Keyboard, and the third placed 192.168.X.X team, who won a K60 mouse each.

And Joe, you definitely need to do more boardgame reviews!
Oh, and three cheers to Paul for organising everything!
Gah, I always fall into that trap :-(
All i wanted was a limited edition poster..
Next time, some more general geekery rounds would be good ;) Maybe a science/maths round and a gaming trivia round...
I hope there are many more!
Cheers for the feedback, obviously it was our first one, so we were a little unsure where to pitch it. We'll take your comments on board for the next one.
Absolutely impossible, but its good having a round like that, where the odd obscure thing you remember from 10 years back gifts you a mark.
We need to revise for the next one!
Yep, we'll be posting the full list of questions (or at least linking to them) in the main article we'll write up about it. We kept all the answer sheets too, so hoping to do a break down of what were the hardest questions. All just depends on time though.
To keep you going, i'll pop a few questions here too:
In The News Round
3. Last month, Seagate announced a partnership with Israeli company DensBits to develop and produce a line of which products?
8. Sony stoked rumours that the Playstation 4 will incorporate cloud gaming features by buying which company at the beginning of July?
TV & Film
2. In which movie did Hugh Jackman play a computer hacker, one who was able to work in spite of assorted distractions?
7. Five Harvard students have ten minutes to get root access to a Python web server, expose its SSL encryption, and then intercept all traffic over its secure ports. Which film are you watching?
General Tech Knowledge
1. Apple's latest iPad model features what Apple calls a Retina display, with a pixel density of 264ppi. What is the resolution of this screen?
5. Most motherboards use a specific function to reduce the electromagnetic interference generated by their onboard clock generators, which we recommend you turn off when overclocking. Name the function.
Tech Acronyms
4. What does HTTP stand for?
5. What does TCP stand for?
Retro Tech
2. In the 1970s, Xerox PARC developed the first operating system with a graphical user interface (GUI) as we now know it. What was it called?
8. How much storage space would you get on a double-sided, double-density 3.5in floppy disk?
Geoff, I bet you forgot to take all those Orac posters to the quiz didn't you? Would have been a great way to "lose" at least some of them.
So did we miss out on some Keyboard/Mouse hybrid that Corsair have yet to release? :D.
And again, as everyone has already said (but can never be enough), thanks to Paul for organising it, we had a great time although my friends knew the answers to barely any of the questions :(.
As was suggested, maybe at least an easier/more general round for people to feel good in or a mix of questions (so like 4 easy, 3 medium, 2 hard and 1 "how did you know the answer was Jurassic Park" question)... although i guess they were already planned out like that and my friends just weren't' tech/geeky enough ;>
But again, Thanks You !
What makes you think that?
I made a special trip to Dennis on Monday night to drop them off, and they were given away to various teams for categories like "Best Team Name" etc
36 posters in total, so VERY "Limited Edition" as they were billed :)
Awesome, makes me even sadder I couldn't come though.
So if it was "3 medium, 2 hard..." are you trying to say you didn't know the Jurassic Park answer?

CLASSIC piece of tragic Hollywood "techie" BS. :D
I would suggest that TRULY hard would have been to ask what was the storage capacity of Keanu Reeves' head in Johnny Mnemonic (if you know this without looking it up, I salute you!)
Can you give me a lift Shirty? :D
It'd be an 850 mile round trip to give you a lift there and back ;)

Probably seemed a lot in 1995.
Indeed, a 1GB hard drive was over US$600. Gotta love progress :)
I'd suggest you maybe hold the next one on a Friday or Saturday?
I'd like to try and make the next one, it's quite a distance to travel but I could visit friends I have in London at the same time :)
The retro round was pretty hard, but I liked the it as I just ended think WTF a lot. Still don't know how we came 5th....
Do we have a larger picture of the meme board? Those were funny :D
I think everyone had a really good night.
Should have a high-res version in the full article that we'll do next week. I think we have plans to put the best ones up on Facebook as well at some point.
Oh, wait, all the pubs are utter crap.
Very true. Easy questions suck!
Congratz to the winners, looking forward to the quiz-breakdown . . . Team R.A.G will return! xx
Good work Mankz and Longweight! What a team!
For the record, I knew the answers to all of the questions that Material listed on the previous page :D I'd have to think hard about the Retina display one, but the rest I knew!
