Very nice idea here. I would be in for designing something since there is cheesecake on the line.
We could start a donation pot(about a dollar each) to buy the cheesecake with.
Here's how I would do it.

sweet i'm in :D coool will start later prob wont know it is a SilverStone Temjin SST-TJ03B at the end

is rendering plugins allowed, like vray for sketch-up ??
nice idea btw !
:D
Aterius Gmork 17th August 2008, 10:26 Quote
It shouldn't be. "Google SketchUp must be used to make this model, i.e. no 3dsmax, no Alias Maya or Cobalt or whatever else there is available these days..."

It would be a bit unfair to those of us who have weak hardware or cannot afford the expensive programs - such as Sketchup Pro.
Mankz 17th August 2008, 11:24 Quote
NO! Let me have my Cobalt... WAAH!

theirs not much difference my friend just different plugins and a few different bits :D most the stuff in pro most people never use
Aterius Gmork 17th August 2008, 11:54 Quote
There is one big difference: The ability to export models as filetypes such as .3ds - which are compatible to better render engines than Kerkythea. ;)
bentleya 17th August 2008, 11:58 Quote
well yes thats what i meant by different plugins, and where not aloud to reader anyways, so :D

Nice idea dude, but I reckon if the idea is good, I'd be willing to buy you the cheesecake myself ;) If the prize was more expensive than cheesecake, like some hardware or something, I might actually have used a fundable account...

EDIT:
Quote:
AMENDMENT 1.1: ONLY THE FEATURES AVAILABLE IN THE FREE VERSION OF SKETCHUP MAY BE USED. So no 3D rendering, no V-Ray and no Mankz. no Cobalt
ComputerKing 17th August 2008, 12:49 Quote
Cool I look forward for this ;)
Aterius Gmork 17th August 2008, 13:02 Quote
I'd still say no! We can have another contest for renders, but a good design with a good render will always win against a better design without one.

Otherwise we say Kerkythea only, to keep the contest "free" of expensive programs.

I'll still participate anyway, as this is about the fun, not the winning (as I won't win), but still it should be fair.

oh, i'm deninately gunna send in my own contribution. My head is tilting with ideas

Not for the winning? There's cheesecake involved man!

i agree Aterius Gmork no renders but it wound be nice to see it done just not for this compo, like i mean once the compo is over post away rendered images :D just wait to it is finished

EDIT: modgodtanvir maybe you could make a lis tin OP of who is entering?
Xtrafresh 17th August 2008, 13:24 Quote
this would be a great opportunity for some sponsors to jump in and fund the winning design to actually be built :)
bentleya 17th August 2008, 13:45 Quote
yes Xtrafresh :D but some may be to wild to be built *cough* mine *cough* well cound be done but may take a hell of a long time

ArteriusGmork presents a good point. Hence,
Quote:
AMENDMENT 1.1: ONLY THE FEATURES AVAILABLE IN THE FREE VERSION OF SKETCHUP MAY BE USED. So no 3D rendering, no V-Ray and no Mankz. no Cobalt

@bentleya, you may submit a design whenever you wish, and it will be added to a list in the OP. If you choose to amend the model, maybe add something, state that it is a different version, and I will amend this on the OP. After the final deadline, which atm is 31st Oct 2008, no more entries will be taken, and a pool will be opened to decide the winner.

A sponsor would be pretty amazing. I'll have a go at sending out a few emails, see if I can get a reply...

Well, as I struggle away with SketchUp (nightmare with curves, isn't it?) I thought I'd introduce you to my idea - Project GT-R. I did a quick hand drawn sketch to have something to refer to, proportion-wise:
http://i34.tinypic.com/er0n4w.jpg

Yep, she's based on the new Nissan GT-R! Its not particularly beautiful, nor has it heritage and its not particularly expensive (qualities I look for in a dream car) but this awesome product of engineering has quickly become my favourite car. With mind numbing speed, and a design influenced by the PlayStation era of Gran Turismo and Gundam Wing, I wanted my case design to reflect all these attributes of the eponymous vehicle... So we'll have lots of aggressive angles, and style inspired by function. And of course, it'll need to be clever and high tech.

I'll fill you in a bit more on the design when I have a few SketchUp models to show you...

Regards until then,;)

You know - you're actually right!
So now its a question of:
http://www.carzi.com/wp-content/uploads/nissan-gtr-garage-defend.jpg vs. http://image.sportcompactcarweb.com/f/car-news/mitsubishi-lancer-evolution-x/7194014+w640+cr1+re0+ar1/mitsubishi-lancer-evolution-x.jpg

Its crazy how similar they both look... I'll stick with the GT-R and change my design - make it more GT-R-like...

And the GT-R would kick the Evo's ass in a race

@Bentleya I like the res design. Since this is a 'pooter model and not an actual build, You can do stuff that would be impossible to build. I'd curve the front of the tubes into each other and shape the top grill around it. The side additions would look less 'tacked' on if you blended the bulge into the front panel somehow.

...oops. Can we give feedback? I live for threads with a lot of brainstorming.

@ Colt - The two rear fans in the model are indeed outside the case. I'm not sure if its meant to be that way (I would expect fans to be inside) since I don't own this case, but Scooby is usually pretty accurate... either way, you can make it however you wish in you own model.

Ok so this is my first real go at using sketchup to mod (I HATE SKETCHUP AND ITS LACK OF MATE/ALIGN TOOLS!). I have a whole album of views because it's kinda hard to see everything, hence the name: Stealth. (Note: If that name has already been used I will think of another) The case is made without any rounded corners or objects on it and only flat surfaces and corners, to stick with the stealth theme. It's a all dark black plexi and plastic case and the metal is painted in differing shades of dark gray, the interior is left light metal color so it shows through the plexi better. Well gimme any opinions on it please ^^ its not as intricate as most of yours but its still up there (there are a LOT of triangles and the likes in there that are barely visible due to the black color). Enjoy the pics:http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc207/alacoshi/StealthCase/StealthCasePainted1.png

Album of diff views: http://s217.photobucket.com/albums/cc207/alacoshi/StealthCase/

Unfortunately your album is password protected. Set it for public access if you want people to see it! --nexxo

Please note I did not put in any hardware except for the DVD drive because its about the case not the hardware right? ;) Plus rather that the majority of it be my work.
modgodtanvir 24th August 2008, 18:31 Quote
Nice one dude ;)

What would be absolutely awesome would be if you could incorporate some metal plates, riveted together, like you might see on the surface of some sort of Stealth aircraft... like you see on the metal in this image.

Colt 45 J 24th August 2008, 19:09 Quote
yea I may do that around the edges. I'll work on that a bit and see if I can make anything of it. though sketchup is a pain in the ass to do detail work like that I'll give it a go. post up a pic if I can get it to look right.
Edit: I'm working on it, it looks cool but does kinda defeat the whole "Stealth" theme, even though stealth aircraft do have rivets :/ I'll post up a draft soon and you guys can choose whichever is better looking.

@Skullen - That would look neater if the tapers overlapped, like on the Air Force Academy chapel in Colorado Springs.
The color on the feet need to match too.
It'd also be neat if the top fins and front fins wrapped around the corners and met.

I've been watching these guys and imagining a 1.5" thick clear acrylic cnc milled "heat-sink" style cover on a case I'm working on right now.

I like the SPIDER design... You should consider entering the contest, by incorporating your panel design into the model of the SilverStone Temjin SST-TJ03B, drawn by Scooby file here and add some other cool stuff too.
Macros_the_Black 27th August 2008, 21:53 Quote
I like the spider design, but I think the ATI AMD logo looks a bit out of place.. like it doesn't really fit the style (even if SPIDER is typed in a ATI-like font). If you are adamant about keeping it, then how about making it a little smaller and perhaps moving it so it is at the center of the spider web? (I have no idea if this would look ok)

[edit]
How about just keeping the ATI part of the logo and stick the AMD part elsewhere on the case?
Kind of like this
Code:
 ATI
/||\\       <----- (web)
SPIDER
[/edit]

Well that's it on the TJ03. Added the mesh which will eventually have a 240 rad behind it where the HDD cage is when I get around to sketchup again.

The only problem with removing the ATI/AMD bit is that it leaves the case a bit bare. I suppose I could put a window in.

Macros_the_Black 28th August 2008, 16:34 Quote
True (a bit bare w/o the AMD bit)... did some quick "photoshopping" on it to see what it would look like it the ATI and AMD elements where moved around, and didn't come up with anything that looked better. <=) This is one of the alternatives, but I can't really say I like it -> pic
The mesh looks great!
Mankz 28th August 2008, 16:52 Quote
I love the webby bit... Perhaps is you got rid of the AMD and ATI names, and extended the AMD Logo across most of the panel, with it starting at the top of the web?
Ending Credits 28th August 2008, 19:42 Quote
Well I've updated the panel a bit:

http://i37.tinypic.com/14vrcqw.png

I templated the AMD Spider picture as a background and traced around it. Unfortunately sketchup can be a bit strange about what it thinks is a plane and what is just lines on a background so I had to go over each section a few times picking out all the little faults. I was planning on putting the spider where the ATI logo is ATM but I thought it might make a good window so I scaled it up (had to move it off the side to do that and then move it back on).

I didn't really want to put the ATI logo at the top of the web but then it all looked a bit out of place with nothing there. I might put the AMD Polygon there instead.

I also need more ideas as the rest of the case is still pretty stock. Hopefully most of the stuff I put in this will translate well to my upcoming project. :D

http://i38.tinypic.com/2lw4zl1.png

I put in three 3870x2s to be replaced by Scooby's 4870x2. Technicly they don't all fit because of the fans on the radiator where the drive bay was. I don't know if the full cover waterblocks will fit either with those fans in the way. Motherboard is an ASUS M3A32-MVP although not finished.

Here we go:

Not finished yet obviously. I want to change the colour and sort out the drive bays. The idea is one which I may be using on my next case mod, but the fact this case has a door over the drive bays is a little difficult. Anyway, a real life version would have a hole in that part for optical bays to poke through.

That's acrylic at the front/top in case you can't see it properly, and at the bottom of the case I've extended the lip, where LEDs will go in order to illuminate the panel and the edges of the fan and button holes. Also the curve on the side panel isn't finished yet. Instead of adding a window, I'm adding radial slots on the side to let small amounts of light through.

@Stuart - Nice faceplate. I can tell you from experience that the holes for the fans are unnecessary.:D No one is going to complain about the drive having an invisible door, (I hope. Mine's kinda sketchy there too.)

That sounds good, I'll try that out and see how it goes. I'll probably end up drawing up a separate model later on for my own case mod (different thread obviously) and I'll factor that into a design as well. :)

I haven't used sketchup for ages, but it struck me as odd that it was lagging so badly, then I changed to wireframe view and I could see why. Just for reference to anyone else with lag issues: TURN SHADOWS OFF at least when you're working on the model, and maybe removing the fans will help as well, it certainly did for me, and you can always put them back in later. Anyway, if it wasn't so much for the lagging, I'd probably remove the door and somehow bring the drive bays that lay behind it forward, but I hope you guys get the idea :p

Thanks for the comments guys! I'll do some work on it tonight if I don't get too much homework from school.

The reason I chose this particular model was because, apart from being a fairly simple case, just asking for some modding, it is also a pretty awesome model. Everything from the thickness of the aluminium to the grouping of different parts and the accuracy of the model contribute to this little SketchUp based masterpiece. So again, a quick thanks to our pal Scooby

I am sorry for those who aren't able to run SketchUp on their computers. The reason I chose SketchUp was because it is freeware, and thus, everyone can have a go, and because from my experience, SketchUp is less straining on a computer system compared to other programmes I have used. I do wonder if an older, less feature packed version of SketchUp would be less of a drain on your systems...

And as far as the models are concerned, the idea is to express as much detail in your model, as you would in your very own modding projects. Often, as well as having a gorgeous exterior, it is important to have an intuitive and exciting interior to complement it. The level of detail you go to is up to yourself, but I am sure the Bit-Tech community can be the judge of how good your model is :)

In short, yes. This contest features an entire case, therefore the exterior and the interior. No less than what I would expect from you dude ;)

I'm really loving the progress I'm seeing with these designs,

Actually I think that Sketchup is an excellent tool, and an excellent choice of tool to use for such a competition. Also funny you should say actually, cause I must have had an older version when I used it before, cause even the model of a shopping complex I made which used to run flawlessly, now lags a little.

@ Cheapskate: I LOVE those girders! Industrial style looks sweet.

It does bring up the question: how much are we allowed to change the actual physical design of the case before it starts to stop featuring the case as in the rules? I'm just curious.

I guess as long as the original chassis is still recognisable, it's ok.

Cheapskate that's freakin awesome! The side panel looks a little weird and complicated, but some well placed lighting should make it look sweet. I'm absolutely in love with the top and front though, especially with those handles.

I've cut my teeth too much in costs/time, 2x 120mm blue leds fans will be as far as I'll go, I would encourage it's new owner to explore that idea.

confusis 5th October 2008, 05:00 Quote
wow that looks amazing! the acrylic does it justice :)

(if my design was to be built i think acrylic would be the material of choice for the 'heatsinks' due to ease of use)

Indeed confusis, esp if you can find a good orange translucent acrylic. The only warning I have for anyone who may attempt to cnc mill acrylic this thick (1-1/4" @ $125), supplied by mcmaster.com, the center portion of the sheet was raised just a hair, so check it first!, and skim some material off the top of your sheet before milling.

Sadly, thick colored plexi is special-order only.
Cofusis might be able to glue 1/2" thick fins on a panel.

I had a couple of ideas although all they use is the motherboard tray . I'll post them anyway:

http://i35.tinypic.com/1587bsn.jpg
A removable module containing HDDs and the motherboard in a LAN style case. Inspired a bit by the Hardcore Reactor although this one is aircooled.

http://i37.tinypic.com/219t4k6.jpg
The idea behind this is that instead of building a case around imersion cooling, you have a "module" with connectors and fill that instead, ready to be inserted into the case. The tubes could be used for directly filling the module.

They're a bit rough but they're just concept designs.

Very cool design Credits. Immersion too!... perhaps inspired by Hardcorecomputer's Reactor PC. I'll be getting to see one up close next week. I'm meeting with their CEO to pitch the idea of modding or custom painting one for `09 Consumer Electronics Show.

I have been working on the case for a while and i would say im about 3/4 of the way done!
At last lol put alot of hours into the model to make sure all the components fit and are the right thickness ect, doesnt make a great visula difference but i just feel better that way.

Anyway here is a progress shot of it so far, there is alot of internal work left to do but for the most part the outside of the case will look like this, bar the top section which needs some mesh or something...

http://forums.bit-tech.net/picture.php?albumid=9&pictureid=15

I decided to call it the Penguin as tbh its as random as i could get!
stuartwood89 9th November 2008, 22:00 Quote
This would look awesome if it was to be made, but I would reserve some concern for that nifty stand you got there. Unless it's made from titanium of something. At any rate: curve the top half and it looks like something that Apple would come up with. Nice work!

On another note I haven't installed SketchUp on my PC yet, so nothing more from me for now. Will there be another competition next year?

Google Sketchup 6. Just read the first post pls.
And to your question concerning Maya and 3Ds... it depends what you want to do, really. From what I've heard 3Ds is better for modeling objects, while Maya is better suited for creating morphing models, such as persons or animals, and it has a good tool for modeling and animating hair and fur.
But I might be wrong, as I've only worked with 3Ds once quite a few years ago (and sucked at it ) and never with Maya. But I can ensure you both programs are VERY complicated to use, esp if you have no experience with modeling software, which is the case judging your post.
Sketchup is far more limited in it's possibilities, and it has no build-in render, but is very easy to learn, and faster to use for purposes as drawing and combining computer components.

I decided to call it the Penguin as tbh its as random as i could get!

That was exactly the look I was going for although it looks a bit like the Voodoo PC. Very nice design, still.

Bugger, Love to get involved but my comp doesnt run sketchup, yes it is a weak little premade computer. Oh well ill wait till i get some money before I design and build my first mod. Anyone know where to get case models for prodesktop, that works for some reason...

BTW im not entering into the comp cause sketchup doesnt work. and i cant be bothered to try with prodesktop

I would be interested in watching the paranormal investigation for this one. They could track the heat from Cheapskate's ghostly drill press in their infrared camera.

Ghost Hunter: "Folks, we can barley make it out, but it appears the ghost is drilling something.. lets look closer, ... it appears to be a waterblock...Yes, it is ... and with what appears to be ...vertical fins?"

skullen: He did mention he would haunt me if I didn't build my design. I think it's his way of saying "If you had built the case, I wouldn't be wasting my bloody time in the spirit world haunting you, now give me peace and build the ****ing case.
