The bit-tech digital art forum and the Photo of the Month site are the main hubs for our photography competition. It is held monthly and open to anyone that wants to enter as long as you're a member of our forums (it's free to register)! The picture can be any photograph of your interpretation of that month's theme, and there is no restriction on what camera you can use. Entries have to be submitted by the 25th of the month, giving you plenty of time to get snapping. The winners are decided by the voting of others who have also entered.

Since winning, Abe was charged with nominating the theme for June-July (because we're late, sorry!) and he's chosen: "Emotion".

Good luck to everyone for June-July and if you have any questions or comments, drop them over here.

Congrats on the win Link, can't say I'm hopeful for the new theme though.

Congrats to Link! Well deserved! :)

Oh, and thanks to those who voted for me as well. I never thought I'd make it to top three. :D

The new there is pretty hard, though. Especially without anyone to model for me...

I really like the new theme, got a few ideas knocking around already!

Congratulations, Link.

Also, on the announcement page, the link for Link's photo points to this random thread from 2002 about Greek people.

I like the new theme. There is quite a bit of possibility there.

Thanks for the compliments everyone, I'm glad a lot of you seem to like the new theme. I'd also like to give my congrats to the runner-ups! I'm excited to see what people come up with for the next 1.5 months. :)

Got my prize yesterday. :D So thanks to everybody, and OCZ. :)

There have been surprisingly few entries so far, though. Hopefully it'll pick up at the middle of this month. I will hopefully put together an entry, but I'm having trouble finding time for it. :(

Now I've got my camera, I've been looking for something to enter as POTM, Nearly had one in work (had my camera on me as well). The statistician had brought fruit in the week before and had left it in a tupperware box. Needless to say it had gone furry and would have made a good shot as the emotion "Disgust"...
Blademrk 10th July 2008, 12:06 Quote
Has anyone entered this months comp yet? also I noticed the POTM site hasn't been updated with this months comp details (still shows May's details).
Smilodon 10th July 2008, 16:23 Quote
There have been two threads so far. I will be entering sometime during next week (hopefully).

Argh, finally found a shot I liked enough to submit and I'm a day out. Typical.

edit: The status on the POTM site is still set to open too.

I didn't get time to do what I had planned. :(

I'll do it later anyway, though.

Changed to voting. I remembered every day this week and I STILL forget on the 25th :(

I *will* remember on the 31st, promise. Nath is off to Mongolia for a month so if this efs-up, then I can't fix it :(
Nath 26th July 2008, 23:52 Quote
Should be cool, just switch the competition status to closed at the end of the month, then click Create new comp or whatever it says sometime during August. Bindi I shall pm you with results details. :)

No, it wasn't. It was pretty hard to find/stage something that would fit the theme, but that doesn't mean the theme was bad.

I would say any theme is lame if you're not up for the game. Or the other way around: Every theme is cool if you're up for it. Some themes may not hit it with you right away but with a little mind-bending you can take the theme in any direction.
Fod 30th July 2008, 12:21 Quote
fair enough, i can take that view too. it's just not much of a springboard-theme - doesn't overtly encourage you to think out of the box.

Whereas The Golden Hour, Red, Lines, etc. etc. do?

I think every theme will instantly make us think of something common to our culture: Golden Hour = Sunset, Lines = Railroad... etc. stuff like that. Thinking out of the box is equally challenging. It also includes the challenge of trying to build imagery that works on several levels instead of just the spontaneous. I would say "Emotion" as a theme is perhaps a bit difficult if you want to venture beyond portraiture but I don't think of it as impossible.
Now this is all easy for me to say now that I haven't participated this month but in all honest I've wanted to skip a month for a while now and I have been traveling so this fit best in for a skip.
Besides of all that I think it's great with themes that challenge me to think outside the box. I think it would even be interesting to see where people here would take it if we had a theme that was VERY specific. Like "hairbrush" or something. It's always a question of whether you wish/try to see limits as opportunities or opportunities as limits.
Fod 30th July 2008, 15:10 Quote
well, the problem with 'emotion' is just that - it's very VERY hard to venture beyond portraiture for the amateur photographer. Golden Hour doesn't have to refer to a sunset, and we saw plenty of interpretations of that theme, and Lines is also way more prompting than you suggest.
allow me to demonstrate what my opinion of an ideal springboard is by suggesting a theme: 'points of view'. i didn't come up with that, i just think it's a good theme, not immediately suggesting a particular photo but forcing the participant to think about an interpretation.
now there's a springboard.
OleJ 30th July 2008, 15:41 Quote
I think we agree to much extent. I just don't think I'd go as far as saying a theme was lame though. I would more think that I hadn't thought enough about it. What I suggested with "hairbrush" as a theme is that even though we all would end up with images of a hairbrush our photographic ventures would make the differences. Meaning that there are so incredibly many ways at going at the same thing that I'd expect great diversity in results. Being a hobby photographer doesn't mean that it's just point and shoot in my book. And yes I am a hobby photographer (in case anyone ever had a doubt? lol )
I also believe we've seen some good and diverse shots this month.
