DVD Jon is back again with claims that he has already bypassed some restrictions on Apple's iPhone, allowing users to use some of the phone's features without activating the device on AT&T's network.

On his blog, Jon revealed "I've found a way to activate a brand new unactivated iPhone," after dubbing July 3rd "iPhone Independence Day."

He hasn't managed to unlock the iPhone's calling capabilities yet but he has been able to use the iPod and WiFi features with a set of commands and an activation server programme that he had created.

Jon pointed out that "[the application] will not do anything unless you understand the magic numbers as well as add the hosts entry."

Yahoo! News managed to speak to an AT&T spokesperson, who said "Any other use of the device is not authorized and we can't guarantee the device will perform as intended to. We'll monitor situations like this and if necessary we will take appropriate action. Our terms and conditions are very clear."

In slightly related news, I'm sure there are countless Europeans cursing Steve Jobs at the moment, because they cannot get hold of an iPhone for another few months.

The FT is reporting that because there is no dominant network operator in Europe, the iPhone will initially launch in the UK, France and Germany, and then the device will roll out to the rest of Europe next year. However the good news is that O2 is reportedly close to landing a deal with Apple for its new device.

It's still not confirmed whether the European iPhone will have 3G capabilities at the moment, as there are conflicting reports from mobile phone operators. Although, it's fair to say that it'd be strange if the device didn't come with 3G.
