Windows could have a new version - Vienna - by 2009.
According to
PCWorld, Microsoft has been talking about the next versions of Windows at the RSA conference.
Ben Fathi is a senior VP at Microsoft, and he has let on that the next major release of Windows, codenamed Vienna, should ship to consumers in 2009 - a swift move on from Vista, which took more than 5 years to get out the door.
Fathi said that there were "Significant improvements that we wanted to make in Vista that we couldn't deliver in one release," which has led to the aggressive scheduling of the new version.
Full-blown virtualisation could be on the cards, enabling ultra-secure operation and possibly making viruses a thing of the past. Running Windows itself within an virtualised environment could prevent low-level access to key hardware and software, making it harder for malicious software to embed itself in the OS.
Fathi also noted that "We're going to look at a fundamental piece of enabling technology. Maybe its hypervisors, I don't know what it is. Maybe it's a new user interface paradigm for consumers." So, as well as hypervisor-style virtualisation, perhaps we'll see a new spin on the interface that has dominated the world since 1995. There is also speculation that WinFS could finally debut in Vienna.
Fiji is the codename for Vista SP1, and we are still expecting to see that before the year is out.
What do you expect from the next version of Windows?
Let us know over in the forums.
Vista is nowhere near what it should be, what happened to the Four Pillars of Longhorn eh?
Are consumers expected to pay £175/yr for this release ? One which needs patching right away and with the service pack release already on the horizon ?
Absolutely not.
The introduction of a Hypervisor will in theory put an end to viruses, something I think most people would welcome.
Yes it could and probably will be seen as a clever way of introducing DRM, however I truely believe DRM will not exist in a few years time.
I'm all for the next version of Windows, to be honest Vienna is what Vista should have been, and if this release schedule is accurate perhaps Vista should have been delayed a few years...
I think the removal of the 'Start' button/menu is a brave move, and it will be interesting to see what style of gui they aim for perhaps something more simplified like the Media Centre interface?
but then bill gates loaded aint he dus it reli matter
I appreciate that you're new, but proper English please ;) Keep 'txt' speak limited to your phone ;)
Who can afford a new PC every 2 years?? apart from so called poor students.
There was only a couple of years between 95, 98, ME & XP. It's only Vista that slowed the cycle down.
who bets they will put the date back atleast 4 times over the comming years? :)
I Believe his location (essex) just said it all :D
(I was born and brought up there :p )
P.S welcome rswami92.
On the other hand, it really doesn't matter. Vista pushed me over the edge and by the time Vienna comes out I hope to have largely forgotten how to use Windows.
(Am happy with my XP at the moment, will wait to see the outcome of vista, then think three times before i buy. )
I think its all marketing and getting more money!!
seconded, unless i can get the proper version of vista at a much lower price or maybe free if my neighbours computers buisness buys it then i will wait for leopard.
hope apple doesnt come out with all the basic, ultimate, buissness ... crap keep it simple thats what i say
Cheers - I'm glad to see that you were able to leave the darkside behind you.

So wait - the longhorn that microsoft promised to us doesn't come out until 2009 and until then people are supposed to pay anywhere from $200 - $400 for an xp servicepack called vista?
I'm so glad I got my macbook pro.
they should have just held vista back another 2 years and renamed it vienna and added what they want to it...
I like the sound of the intelligent pre-caching, readyboost and those things. The Aero interface, sounds interesting, but not something I would upgrade an entire OS for.
I think I might wait for a little longer before I pull the trigger on an upgrade. Especially want to know about the OEM versions true restrictions on moving it from PC to PC or reinstalling etc. I dont think I could afford the retail ultimate version even if I wanted to.
This mean that 2009 will the the year of 3 MS OSes?
ROFLMAO. I got free Vista for from from MS because I attend on their developers launch. If I hadn't them for free I would still use my XP as main OS until I do my final movement to Linux who's waiting on the 2nd partition patiently :D
"OH NOES! MICROSOFT ARE RELEASING SOMETHING QUICKLY!!! LET'S COMPLAIN!!!!!!!!"
I love the internet :/
All software companies overcharge anyway, it's just the way it works.
But it's Apple, they can do no wrong...
Just think for a moment about how many times the rules around Vista's activation changed over the last few months. And that was when they already had a finished product. This stuff about Vienna is just blue sky musing. Don't take it so seriously.
95 - 98
2000 - ME
so a 2 or so year gap isn't that much, but only when they try and charge you £300 or so.
In all seriousness, work on Vienna began in 2001.
I'd be amazed it arrived any later than 2010..
when i say broken i mean that drivers are far too hard to develop for it which is possibly the case.
My big worry is that they do release this in 2009 and bundle along DX11 with it forcing everyone who games to use it. however i dont think this would happen as surely there is some sort of forced marketing law against this sort of thing. whilst DX10 required a new form of driver interface with the OS. will Vienna use this same interface or as i said is Vista just plain to hard to develop drivers for, in which case Vista will be a Painful upgrade even in 4 months time. i suppose we will have to see comparisons of r600 Xp vs Vista to see just how bad Vista and DX10 is
DirectX11 is a way, way, way off...
Um, what? Apple last released a major update (10.4 Tiger) in April 2005, and Panther (10.3) was way back in '03.
shame which wouldn't take much.
Many people I know used Windows 2000 for a long time after XP was released. Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to buy it.
If you need DX10 for gaming in 6 months time buy a basic Vista and run dual boot.
The way everyone is carrying on you'd think MS had said "Right, we just thought we'd let you all know, XP has a kill switch in it that will stop it working in oooo, about 5 mins, and we've put one in Vista as well, Happy upgrading"
