Back when we reported on the showstopper bug present in the RC2 version of Vista, we heard that the RTM date for the new OS would be moved out to November 8th. This two weeks was meant to allow a new build to be developed and tested rigorously in hopes of getting Vista to manufacturing in order for the deadline. It appears they may have finished up just a little early - rumour has it that the OS goes gold today.
This two days ahead of schedule means little in the way of meeting or losing deadlines, but it does say a lot about Microsoft's comfort with the code. Apparently, though, the boys in Redmond had an interesting extra hurdle to overcome with finishing the product. The power went out in Microsoft's Vista development labs on Friday night, preventing them from releasing a test build that evening. Who says being a coder can't be a little thrilling?
Monday is apparently an overall golden day for Microsoft - Office 2007 is going RTM today as well.
All of this has meant that the company will be able to stay true to its word of the software showing up to businesses on November 30th. Trial versions of Office will be available for download in the US and EU starting on December 1st. Both Office and Vista are still slated for their retail release on January 30th, 2007.
