Vista bug delays release

"One down, 499 to go" - A showstopper Vista bug has been squashed, but not before a week's delay of the RTM.

Some days, you'd swear Vista just couldn't catch a break. After the release of RC2 (build 5824), it finally seemed like the system was getting ready to roll. The bug count had shifted down from almost 1,500 to a teenie-tiny (?!) 500. Of course, one of those 500 had to be an utter showstopper...

Though the bug was not described in detail, one beta tester said that it "would totally crash the system, requiring a complete reinstall." Once it had been reported, it was hunted down and squashed within a week - just a bit too long to hit the October 25 RTM date. The newly compiled build, 5840, is now in the process of being further tested.

Assuming the new build passes specs, Vista will go to RTM as quickly as possible - the new target is November 8. Microsoft still intends to maintain its January release, despite the issue. Of course, nobody has mentioned much about the other 499 nasty little critters still crawling through the code...but one would suppose that's why Windows Update exists.

Another day, another delay. Do you think Windows Vista will make it to consumers by the January deadline? More importantly, should it? Tell us your thoughts in our forums.

Well, I'd rather them fix the problem now and wait a week, than having to hotfix your vista install everytime you format!

I hope the other 499 bugs aren't as significant.

nice that they fixed it, and to be fair 499 bugs in an OS that is what, 10 billion lines long (its huge, thats a total exaggeration but it is huge) isnt at all bad.

Well since I wont be getting Vista for some time, I would prefer the bugs to be ironed out before release.

My main machine probably won't get Vista until SP1.

Delay a release just bbecause there are problems, that dosent sound like microsoft at all. Release an unfinished product now and slowly release updates to make it functional.

Remember, the 500 are a list of "known" bugs. I'm sure there are many many more that have yet to be discovered. (Which is what Security updates, patches, and service packs are for etc). It'd be near impossible to ship a bug free product, especially one of this size/scope/complexity.

Personally, they can't ship this thing fast enough. Win XP just hasn't been "enough" for my needs for sooo long now. I need Vista and all it's extra features to make me that much more productive ASAP. Wait a sec, something about this paragraph just doesn't add up... :P

Seriously though, ship it whenever you want, Vista has no relevance to me until A. DX10 cards ship, and B. DX10 runtime ships (which may not come with Vista, and release later in an update?). Anything until then, is simply off the radar.

It is virtually impossible to ship any product bug free, is anyone surprised to see vista delayed again? :? :? :?
