Laser TV technology to kill plasma

Laser television will be cheaper, better and more energy efficent. Where's the catch?

In a recent column Brett discussed the confusing world of high-definition television. That debate could soon get even more befuddling as a new company, creating 'Laser TV's', has entered the fray.

This report, which originates from the Sydney Morning Herald, claims that a soon-to-be-listed company called Arasor International has unveiled the world's first Laser TV. The important facts about this TV are that it will be twice as good as plasma television, cost half as much and will use a quarter of the energy used by LCD televisions.

The Sydney Morning Herald say that the screen looks "brighter and clearer" than a rival Plasma screen and also state that it is planned to be released Christmas 2007. The chief of the American company Novalux, which is partnering with Arasor in this venture, went so far as to say this would be the end for plasma televisions:

"If you look at any screen today, the colour content is roughly about 30-35 per cent of what the eye can see. But for the very first time with a laser TV we'll be able to see 90 per cent of what the eye can see. All of a sudden what you see is a lifelike image on display."

The unique technology powering the laser TV is the optoelectronic chip. It's already impressed the big money companies with both Samsung and Mitsubishi already on board with the project. For everyone wanting a television over 40" this could be the must have purchase of 2007!

I wonder what would happen if a unit were to have a fault all of a sudden? You'd be watching Ainsley Harriet tossing something in a salad bowl then next thing you know, you've had your eyebrows singed off by a stray laser.

Sounds good though, particularly the price point.

Sounds interesting. A little more fact and figures would be good.

Why would a laser TV be likely to develop a fault whereby it automatically switched to an Ainsley Harriott programme?

Oh...wait... :D

It would serve you right for watching him in the first place :D
Seriously, this is why I have stuck with good ol' crt, and will for the near future. I've never seen conventional tft's as more than an interim solution, given their natural compromises on scaling, contrast, varying brightness an light bleed. I'll wait until a definitive solution appears befor I make the switch to anything other than crt. The only disadvantage is the weight and power consumption.

Edited because I'm a daft apath :)

I think he was referring to the weight and power consumption of a CRT.

Sounds nice.
Will it have the same scaling limitations as LCDs?

Off to t'interweb for the hunt for more info... :)

I'll believe it when I see it.

"Press Release" technology always sounds great, but it's a whole nother story to get that stuff actually out on the market.

I'm still waiting for my Organic LED TV...

Sounds promising, hope it turns out, but I definitely won't hold my breath.

Even if it's half the cost to produce there will be some "profit taking" before the price drops to a "decent" level

nice..... i hope it does not become like Blue-ray has become........ blue-ray was so cool on paper, but now it kind of sucks.

*shakes fist*

Go to that ITWire article, and you can see it in action compared to a Plasma TV. There REALLY is alot of difference.

Well in my defence was anyone even aware they had a tech industry? Well it certainly looks good if it comes to fruition :) Kudos to the guys behind the tech!

Don't mean to sound negative but it's yet just ANOTHER marketing ploy to try to sway some sponsors in their direction. I have heard sooo many "our new technology is going to revolutionise TV's" I am getting sick of it.

OLED, SED & FLCD Televisions anyone?... Lets add Lazer TV's to that list.

Much like Aggies said, I will not be holding my breath for this one. Time to buy me one of those 1080p Pioneer 50 inch plasma sets ... dream.
Quote xion 17th October 2006, 18:13
I dont care what the tech is or how well it performs... i just want one because it sounds the charlies!!! "i have brand new 50"" HD-LASER-tv!!!!" thats the suff of star trek! ...ahem, over excited a tad... :D
