Original Star Wars Trilogy coming to DVD

Han Shot First! The original Star Wars Trilogy could be coming to DVD.

The original Star Wars Trilogy is coming to DVD later on this year.

George Lucas had previously suggested that the original versions of the films might no longer exist, but now it transpires that they will be released before the year is out, on September 12.

What's all the fuss about? Well, the only versions of the films you can get now are variations on the 1997 Special Editions, where various parts of the trilogy got re-edited and re-mastered. The biggest issue that many fans had was that in A New Hope, the original version, Han shoots Greedo in the Cantina. In the Special Edition, Greedo shot first - a major alteration to Han's storyline. Fans have campaigned for years to have the original versions re-instated!

The films will come in two disc packs rather than as a box set, with original versions and re-mastered versions bundled together. The original versions will be totally unedited and will sport the original Dolby 2.0 Surround soundtrack.

There is still no word on a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray release of the films, although, to quote The Emperor, It Is Inevitable.

Lego Star Wars 2, the game based on the original trilogy, will be out on the same day.

Do you love the re-mastered Trilogy or are you a die-hard 1977 purist? Let us know your thoughts over in the forums.
