Vivid Video, the company that brought you Jenna Jameson, is gearing up to offer downloadable DVDs next month.

From May 8, Vivid fans will be able to head across to CinemaNow to get titles - no word on exactly which ones, yet, although there will be around 30.

The service Vivid is offering will enable the entire DVD to be downloaded from CinemaNow and then burned to a DVD-R. DRM protocols, included with the CinemaNow client, will limit the number of burns to just one.

Other CinemaNow titles (the service offers a number of mainstream movies for rental or purchase) cannot be burned in a format that will allow playback on a normal DVD player and TV screen. Vivid's format, however, will enable this, making it something of a pioneer. Also included will be the full menu system for easy (one-handed?) navigation.

However, you'll need a Windows PC to download the titles, since they're encoded with Microsoft DRM. If you want to play the films on your TV, you'll need a DVD player that supports burned discs.

The titles will cost $19.95, roughly the same cost as retail - combined with the DVD functionality, this appears to be very much like buying the DVD, without the shipping charge.

Of course, since CinemaNow isn't available outside the US, the Vivid downloads will only be for US customers. Back to torrents for us, then.
