Normally we wouldn't abide by gossip, but the guys over at Bay-area chatter-blog ValleyWag have some info on Google's next online product.

We're surely all familiar with the social bookmarking site Del.icio.us and the fact it was bought for an outrageous amount of money by Yahoo. The service allows users to store their bookmarks online, join up with friends and find out what others are bookmarking.

The site is part of the 'Web 2.0' phenomenon - a set of principals governing new websites that all fit into a social networking / friends listing / personalisation / blog-esque set of criteria or guidelines. Experts think that connecting people with other people of a similar mindset will be functionality that drives the next generation of web users (read: will make them loads of money).

Google is keen to get in on all this too, since anything Yahoo can do, Google wants to be doing better. Google has has limited success with its recent product launches, such as Google Talk and Google Video, so it will surely be hoping to do a bit better with this. Quite how the service will differ from Del.icio.us we don't know, but it looks like we'll have to stay tuned to find out.
