It's the same old story. A report in an obscure and often wrong Far Eastern electronics rag over the ramp-up of production of NAND based Flash chips by two major manufacturers has the rank and file mac-o-philes salivating over possible fruit flavoured product upgrades:

Samsung Electronics and Toshiba are aggressively planning to ramp up their output of 8Gbit NAND flash chips in preparation for the new Apple-branded players, says the report by DigiTimes.

It should be noted that DigiTimes has been consistently inaccurate in their predictions of future and unannounced Apple products.

Still, the overseas publication which closely monitors Apple's component suppliers and hardware manufacturers in the far east, may be on to something.

More from AppleInsider here.

Larger capacity flash based players? Yeah, it's a possibility. But flash based players with screens? If this happens, and it's in the same form factor as the shuffle, and is marketed as a shuffle... Doesn't that sort of blow Apple's 'hey, random is good' spiel that they came out with in the first place? Hmmm...

It's my guess that these higher capacity flash-pods will more than likely be more iPod mini than shuffle. What do you think?
