Rumour: PS3 Slim in production for August release

If the rumours are true and the PS3 Slim is in production, we expect it to be released in August.

According to Taiwanese site UDN (Translation: here), the rumoured Sony PS3 Slim has entered production and the first units off the production line will start shipping to Sony this month.

Sony has reportedly signed manufacturing agreements with Foxconn and Pegatron to build the new model in time for a July delivery.

If this holds true, it's likely that the PS3 Slim will be released in time to coincide with the rumoured price cuts in August.

Adding further fuel to that fire, Ars Technica reckons that the 80GB PS3 will become increasingly scarce over the next few months - there's only about 60 days of inventory left of this model, according to Ars' source.

Discuss in the forums.

that means the ps3 slim is going to be more expensive than the original what they need to do is introduc a price drop
Quote Fod 1st July 2009, 16:19
it'll be the same price or marginally cheaper. or perhaps will launch at the same price as the 'reduced' PS3.

Is it wrong that when I read this, I thought 'oh they only have 5 left then'?

so wait if its going to be smaller then does that mean we will have an even larger heat issue?

Not if you mod it and use water cooling ^_^

But the PS2 slim was a very hot console IIRC so if the PS3 is suffering from heat issues does that mean the PS3 slim will be plagued by the yellow line of death? lol

The slim ps2, always seemed more reliable then the big daddy ps2 back in the day, either way sony needs to fix my blue ray drive before that start making something new :D

I dunno if it's heat issues or general issues but a lot of people I've spoken to are getting the Yellow light of death (their phrase not mine alright!) and it's going up, not sure if that's because more people are getting PS3s though so the failure rate is increasing...

Heh, my first-rev 60GB PS3 is still running strong after running F@H nearly constantly since I've had it ( I don't get to play much =( )

And the PS2 Slim does not have heat issues either, AFAIK.

when the ps3 first launched in the us many people reported about heat related lock ups similar to the 360, thats all i was talking about, they probably resolved that
Quote Psy-UK 1st July 2009, 19:33
Yay. Even more SKUs.
Quote Elton 1st July 2009, 20:56
The PS3 still has heat issues, namely the 40GB and the 80GB one.

I've fixed 3, 1 60GB, 1 40GB and 1 80GB...

>_> F an on top ftw.
Quote LT.BEECH 1st July 2009, 21:01
i've had my ps3 since it was lanched and never had any heat related problems even in the summer. and in the summer my room hit about 30 degrees celcious. but i dont see why they're making a slim anyway i've never heard people complain about the size of the original ps3. it's also gonna be a bti pointless if they're going to make it more expensive.

Its great they are making a slim, but my god don't the pictures shown on the web look absolutely shite! The PS3 never looked the greatest but squashing it hasn't helped.

Why could they not just make it a nice shape to fit in with other home AV stuff.

Will be great if the slim has dropped the active internal PSU in favour of a laptop style passive unit, there will be bugger all to cool then as the chips aren't that toasty.

Got lots of PS3 buddies, never heard of anyone with yellow light or heat issues, in fact i'm the only one I know who has had a failure when my BD drive stopped, machine still worked great in every other respect though.
Quote talladega 1st July 2009, 22:59
you realize all the pics on the web of a slim ps3 are fakes?

Any console that get's very hot to touch in my opinion has heat issues, that's what I've experienced with every PS2 slim I've been around. But that's just me, I'm a cool freak, I just stuck an arctic cooling Accelero S1 rev2 on my X1300 pro because it was very loud and hitting 75C on load but doesn't even reach 40C on passive mode :)

Yeah mines fine, admittedly it's not seen a whole lot of use. No wait, it did have loads of use with GH 1 and 2.

However, I'm not sure if cramming a PS3 into a smaller box will really help.

Sony already make a really nice looking full size blue-ray player, just take the innards from the PS3 and shove them in that, will blend in with the AV stack and look a lot nicer.

Oh and put the sodding USB ports back on the rear

kimby crawls out of the dark once again! I have to agree the PS3 is a very ugly beast under a tv or even in my field of view, hence why i haven't purchased one yet.
Quote Mister_Tad 2nd July 2009, 23:25
At least it isn't white

I just wish they would make consoles as a standard width AV component. I'd happily pay a fair wodge extra for it.
Quote Rocket_Knight64 3rd July 2009, 00:24
Too right! Could be a neat mod project to put a console into a nice Hi-Fi amp case?

Course you would void your warrenty and need a sutable doner amp. Maybe a releace day 360 user could step forwards?
Quote an4rew 6th July 2009, 00:42
I hate the current PS3.

Theres no way to make it much smaller unless they remove the PSU, another external power brick to rival the 360 one?

When I read this, the first thing that popped into my mind was a picturesque scene in the woods, with the two power-bricks fighting it out, samurai verses ninja style, each out for the others blood in a no-holds-barred struggle for dominance over the domain they both claim as their natural right.

Best. Day-dream. Ever.
