Ten years on, the original Half-Life is still held up as one of the best computer games ever made.
It may have been ten years since the original
Half-Life was released but we can still remember just how influential and important the game was.
So influential in fact that ever since the release of
Half-Life 2 a team of very dedicated modders have been making a remake of the game in
Half-Life 2s Source engine. A proper remake too with new models and textures, not like the disappointing
Half-Life: Source from Valve.
To help ramp up excitement this holiday season the team has released a new trailer which shows off some of the most exciting and dramatic moments in the original game - everything from the tentacles in the rocket lab to your cliff-side descent in Surface Tension.
What's most exciting of all though is the vague 2009 release date which has now been set for the project, meaning that a chance to relive the original
Half-Life experience may finally be upon us.
You can check out the full trailer below, or visit the
official Black Mesa Source website for more information - and don't forget to let us know what you think in
the forums.
That looks most win indeed!! Looking forward to its release, be good to play thought the original Half Life again having completed all of the Half Life 2 series also. :D
ehm ehm... Testing... testing..... Freeman are you there?
I remember it like yesterdag as one of my most awesome moment in gaming :)
Why valve never did a proper re-make themselves i do not know, it would have sold like hot cakes, but i guess if they had cocked it up somehow it would ruin the whole HL series...either that or by trying so hard to not cock it up, we wouldnt have got the rest of the plethora of games they have released recently.
Looks soo great...
Playing through the original HL (albeit source one) again brought back so many fond memories.
Personally I think HL1 is vastly superior to HL2 (probably because the idea and concept of the HL series was fresh) so adding the graphics from HL2 only adds to the gap between them.
I'm glad they did not, as I look forward to Episode 3, I am loving Left 4 Dead hours per week, and who knows what there next projects are! If they spent the time and effort that this mod team have done with the original Half Life then we would have experienced delays in current and future game launches, or the games would be more expensive paying for the extra devs.
The trailers looks really good, can't wait to relive the original Half Life experience and hope Valve plan to support the mod team 100% and host it through Steam!
I simply cannot wait to play this!
I'm installing steam and hl1 on my flash drive right now.
Now I have to play HL again to get into the mood
i like half life.
You'd be surprised at how much staring at readouts real physics actually involves.
the trailer looks epic, with a master piece of original game, i bet this will be a top HL2 mod download for at least 6 months.
Equally unfortunately, this is another work of art that is chained unavoidably to the unsinkable ship that is the Titanic. Sorry, Steam.
+1 :o
The only thing that could possibly shoot this down in flames would be Valve themselves, but I think it's been around long enough that they're either going to throw their support behind the team 100%, or (more likely) hire the lot of them on the spot. I really, really hope they don't decide to assert their ownership; they've already made more money than God on the game, and HL1 is included with just about every purchase you can make on Steam. Actually, considering you have to own HL2 in the first place, you'll probably own the game anyways :)
have you tried steam recently? it's pretty decent.

2009 is long...when ?
Glad they updated, I though the mod was dead.
I have also been watching this mod since the very early days and can't wait for it to be finished.
I'm definately going back to black mesa
You realise that it's a free mod, right?
I'm sure it's decent right now, will be decent next week, and might still be decent in eighteen months' time. It's the long term that worries me.
I'd seen the designs and the screen shots before but actually seeing it in motion looks simply wonderful, god bless modders and you'll be getting my money on release date thats for sure. Gotta love the Silo tentacle beast!
I read about the HL source that Valve did themselves, didn't sound all that great besides once you put the HiDef pack from Blue Shift in the original HL looked pretty good considering its age. I still can't make up my mind about swapping the MP5/ GL combo for the M203 as your primary tool of death dealing.
Be aware that the original HL payed a visit to the alien homeworld of Zen and as much as I utterly love HL, this is more that just a bit rubbish. I mean, a walking testicle beast that you can't kill? Who knows maybe BMS will improve things a bit, but then they would be altering the game so they might not want to do that.
I'd hate to think someone might get put off the game when you reach Zen, just hang in there it does take you back eventually.
