It's time to say goodbye to the servers for some of Sierra's most classic games. We'll miss you, AVP2.

In a move that has probably come about as a side effect of the Vivendi Activision merger with Blizzard, Sierra is shutting down servers for 21 of its most classic computer games, many of which can easily be considered all-time classics.

What exactly is going to happen to Sierra has long been an issue for Activision Blizzard and already several in-development games coming from the publisher have been cancelled. In fact, the last we heard, several attached development studios were being assessed for sale or closure, including Massive Entertainment of World in Conflict fame.

Come the start of November, the official servers for all the games listed below will be shut down.

1. Alien vs Predator 2
2. Arcanum
3. Caesar IV
4. Dark Reign 2
5. Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom
6. Empire Earth
7. Empire Earth 2
8. Empire Earth: Age of Conquest
9. Ground Control
10. Ground Control 2
11. Homeworld
12. Homeworld: Cataclysm
13. Nolf 2
14. Red Baron
15. Sanity
16. Star Trek: Armada
17. SWAT3: EE
18. SWAT3: GOTY
19. The Incredible Machine
20. Tribes 2
21. Vampire

Of course, the loss of some of those games will pass most by without effect - but AVP2's sudden departure is enough to leave a big, facehugger-shaped hole in the hearts of many LAN gamers. Sniff.

Which was your favourite Sierra game of all time, not counting Half-Life obviously? Let us know your thoughts and nostalgia in the forums.

Noooes! Not Homeworld. That is lame. Very very lame.

Makes me wanna play it again :(
Quote kenco_uk 9th October 2008, 14:49
Bring on another Homeworld already, sheesh.
Quote Bauul 9th October 2008, 14:50
Hang on, they're shutting down their own hosted servers? How does this affect Lan gamers? I'm confuzzled.
Quote Mentai 9th October 2008, 14:52
Nolf 2 was awesome. It's a franchise I hope a company returns to one day.
Quote Goty 9th October 2008, 14:57
This will dent the player base for a while, but if this is anything like when they shut down the master server for Tribes, chances are that someone out there will set up a new one just so those few thousand people still playing the game can keep doing so.
Quote p3n 9th October 2008, 15:00
Why would interweb servers effect LAN gamers?
Quote proxess 9th October 2008, 15:00
Emporor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom <3 loved that game, tho never really played online.
Quote DarkLord7854 9th October 2008, 15:02
Are you kidding me? AvP2 again? Ugh.. -.-
Quote Zurechial 9th October 2008, 15:12
I don't recall Arcanum having an online component, am I wrong there?

Nobody plays Vampire on the Sierra servers any more, those few people still playing use virtual LANs via Hamachi.. and I'd imagine that'll be common practice for many older games like these.

I always thought Arcanum was Single Player as well... great game though

I do not see how it would effect lan games, especially on games as old as that. This being said, I think internet play is still possible but will now be limited to vpns.
Quote Jojii 9th October 2008, 16:17
sierra didnt transition well into these last couple years
Quote knyghtryda 9th October 2008, 16:27
any want to dust off their old copy of homeworld and get a hamachi lan going? I haven't played that game in years. I just reinstalled starcraft and am realizing just how rusty I am at it...
Quote theevilelephant 9th October 2008, 16:42
I will miss Tribes 2, loved that game, still fire it up now and then to have a play.
Quote Cadillac Ferd 9th October 2008, 17:10
Wow.
Homeworld aaaaaaand Tribes?
Talk about a one-two punch in the balls.

It's a shame to Sierra die off with not even so much as a whimper, when you look back on all the great games they had a part in over the years it makes me pretty sad to see them go.

They haven't tried continuing their IPs.. AvP, Homeworld, etc.. all were great games and sold well.. but they never continued them further.. I would still love to see an AvP3

I'm really not bothered about T2 finally dying a slow death, it was an awful game compared to the original.

AVP2 though? sadface.
Quote pendragon 9th October 2008, 17:50
that's a shame.. i know tribes 2 was really popular with some of my friends :-/
Quote Aterius Gmork 9th October 2008, 19:08
Nooo, how do I play Empire Earth now?
Quote Brooxy 9th October 2008, 19:16
Ground Control? Awwwwww I loved that game.

Oh well, still got Starcraft - and Starcraft 2 :)
Quote ToMMo 9th October 2008, 20:00

I don't see how LAN games are infulenced by this... unless I'm missing something?

Imagine what will happen when EA decides to shut down their authentication servers for those games that you have to authenticate online? We all probably have a 5+ year old game that we still like to fire up from time to time. No server to authenticate to, no install. No wonder people pirate DRM games.

I believe they've said they'd make patches available to remove the activation if they were to take down the servers

I sure hope so.
By the way, what was that sierra game where you played a detective solving a case. I miss that game.
Quote Amon 10th October 2008, 05:10
Oh wow this blows. I actually own almost that entire list of games; now that I think of it, Sierra composes half of my games... I wasn't online much, but they're obviously not giving a second look.

The one where you play as a woman? And everything is 70's flower-style and whacked out?

No one lives forever, although I only played the second one. Good fun though, if it's what your thinking of.

Quote Azmat 10th October 2008, 07:21
Tribes 2 was still being played =( Not that overly many, but getting a 40-person server full still happened frequently. But oh-well, a master-server work-around will be in the works :D
Quote Xtrafresh 10th October 2008, 07:52
teh noes, not homeworld! :(

I think i just died a bit inside.
Quote Xir 10th October 2008, 08:32
Loved Ground Control, graphics scaled very well with newer computers ;-)
Couldn't get the hang of Ground Control 2 though.

The first NOLF game is still worth picking up. For eight year old software, the Lithtech engine holds up pretty well.

OT, were people still playing half of these games online anymore, anyway?

i would whine and cry about T2 going down, but honestly, i havent played it in probably 4 years.

I did spend most every waking hour playing it for the first couple of years it was out though ... but between the horrible 3rd game and the release of BF it really died some time in 2004.

If they made along the lines of AvP2, yes, and it'd be glorious.

Hardcore on AvP2 still gives me a few frights.

Now imagine if they did make AvP3, and including scripted events with xenos popping up here and there, they added a random factor of having a group (or one) xeno bursting out of the ceiling, wall, or floor at you.

Having your motion sensor detect random movements, etc.. Man, I really wish I knew why they decided to abandon the franchise (and hope AvP3 still comes out sometime..)
Quote Ghys 13th October 2008, 17:36
I don't understand why they didn't release another one when they could have used the marketing of the two AVP films to sell their game.
