David Reeves has confirmed that there will be no PlayStation 3 price cut this year at all in Europe.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss David Reeves has confirmed that there will be no price cuts in Europe for the PlayStation 3 this year.
As it is, the PlayStation 3 is the most powerful console on the market in raw processing terms, but is also the most expensive.
Speaking to
GamesIndustry.biz, David Reeves that flat out, no, there would be absolutely no price cut for any of the PlayStation 3 models before 2009.
Sony is however unveiling a whole load of new features for current PlayStation 3 owners and showcased a lot of new content at the recent Leipzig Games Convention, including Vidzone and others.
One item that was notably absent from the Leipzig line-up however was Sony's
Home, the virtual online world for PlayStation 3 users.
Home has suffered frequent delays and setbacks, but Reeves is adamant that
Home is still actively in development.
"
Everything is absolutely on track. I can look you in the eyes and tell you it's on track," he said.
"
The closed beta has been expanding, the open beta will come in the Autumn and will be announced by the Home group - either in London or in Tokyo. I don't know when exactly, but they're in control of it."
Were you looking forward to a PS3 price reduction this year, or are you more interested in your PC, Xbox 360 or Wii? Let us know in
the forums.
Home will be here 100% according to one of the game designers/engineers as well.
Also, yes, PS3 is more expensive, but it's still hard to rule out that you get more features vs. the competition, as well as an enticing lineup of software coming soon, so the price thing compared to 360/Wii really is negotiable, but yes, the base price is more expensive...
more expensive.... in the UK. In the US there is only £25 difference between the 60GB 360 and the 80GB PS3. In the UK there is £120 difference on those identical products. The 360 being basically in-line with US price + VAT.
In your opinion what features and games makes the UK PS3 worth £70 more than the US PS3?
games and features have nothing to do with it. its just our government likes to **** us in the arse more then yours.
I can tell you what features/games that makes the PS3's price more justified when in comparison to the 360's price (at least here in the US since right now 360's models are all $50 cheaper than comparable PS3 models)
Where people are based has gotten confusing, I'm from the UK. You saying you are from the UK also?
I was being sarcastic with that question really. But yeah, I forgot that thing about the BC. The price I checked was the 80GB PS3 which has just come out here, we've not had an 80GB so far. This new one has no backwards compatibility. So with that and the fact the US PS3 is worth more because it's Blu-Ray player is region A. Thus can play new release Blu-Ray titles which come out sooner.. and are cheaper (But that's an issue for another thread. :P), the US version is better than the UK one.
If I was in the US, $50/£25 is a premium I would pay for the Blu-Ray player in the PS3 over the price of a 360, that's fair, the console is a year newer.... The $140/£70 price difference (after VAT) here isn't right.
So, as M4RTIN said, they need to lob off that £50.
But while no where are getting a price cut we are gettting more for our money with the 160gb SKU which replaces the 80GB for the same price and I think the 40GB is turning into an 80GB with no price increase.
Pah! You've got to be joking!
The PS3 won't be "cheap" for quite awhile, and if Sony continues upgrading the hard drives every year (maybe move to SSD's in 1-2 years?) then there is no reason for them to drop the price. The PS3 isn't meant to be cheap, it's games aren't cheap, it isn't play *well* without a high-def display, and blu-ray titles are in the $30 price range, and you want the console to be *cheap*? If you want cheap, go buy a Wii. The PS3 (like the 360 Elite) are more of the "BMW/Audi/Benz/" etc of consoles, Wii is the fuel efficient Civic, no frills, no leather, no GPS.
Wow.. how much Sony pay you for that?
Also you clearly haven't read this thread.. or my posts at least.
The Wii is £180, PS3 40gb is £250 and the 360 60GB is £200. There is nothing in the price now, just the cost of a game for christ sake and PS3 is only 17 months old and we have seen more price drops than any other console before.
£70 more than a Wii and £50 more than a 360 you get a blu-ray play and what ever extra. Stop moaning about the dam price.
If its too expensive for you then its simple, you cant have one. Stop being babies and grow up.
Simple and to the point. I like. Regardless, with $60 titles, the requirements for an HDTV to truly "experience" the games, and expensive blu-ray titles even if those who whined and got their prices cuts, would then start to whine that the games, titles and TV's are expensive. It's a cycle, best worth ignoring those who follow it.
No price cuts, no need really. I can't afford a PS3 right now so a price cut would be great, but I bought my first PS2 for $1000NZD and I still think it was worth it. I am now on my 4th or 5th PS2 now not due to
RRODthe console dieing, but giving them to siblings and getting the slim version, then having them stolen several times. If Sony even put a SSD hard drive in as standard, I will happily lick your sony ass clean
This time last year this was a much more valid point, a blu ray player was a grand and a ps3, 400 quid, seemed like you must be a member of the local mental asylum to buy a blu ray player and it not to be a ps3. now there 150, so its still valid, but less so
if blu ray end up like dvd players did, theyll be a tenner in a couple of years time and sony & its fan boys wont be able to use this as an excuse no longer, and they will be forced to drop it to a reasonable price
im not really sure if the ps3 will drop in price this year, now theyve put an 80gb hard drive as standard, i doubt it
xbox most likely will tho, as sales are dropping off, and they want to win the christmas crowd!
i'd like to get one, but a 360 + wii is enough for me. for now.
how much is minimum wage over there? here it is $8 (actually quite high compared to other areas) which would be about £4 - £5 for you. Where I live the average household income is around $35,000 - $45,000.
Call me a fanboy if you want (and I admit that I am a little) but I would easily buy a Xbox if there were enough games that I liked on the system. It just comes down to the controller and games for me.
You're missing an important point... the issue with stand-alone Blu-Ray players (especially the initial ones) was that the Blu-Ray spec was changed along the lines, and since the first-gen machines weren't exactly designed to be upgraded, people were left pretty ticked off (HD-DVD had an easier firmware upgrade feature). While the PS3 still offers the best Blu-Ray playback for your money, it also bundles any Blu-Ray spec related changes/upgrades (like the interactive Java) along in standard PS3 firmware upgrades which is *very* convenient, something you cannot do with stand-alone players.
My statement is simply a contemplation of what Sony would choose to bundle the PS3 with *down the road*, with the falling prices of SSD's it's entirely possible that in 1.5-2 years you could either upgrade it yourself to a 2.5" SSD for a reasonable price, or Sony will bundle it with their console instead of the current 5400rpm 2.5" HD's.
Aye, the trouble is that you pay Tax on your earnings and also National Insurance contributions. Want a prescription? That's £7.10 a pop, despite already paying NI. 17.5% tax on pretty much everything now. Fuel duty is pure extortion and is taxed on top. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for all this tax. It's barmy. Tax on phone calls, gas, electricity, water.
:(
I think minimum wage is £5.52 atm.
we earn less money, pay less taxes and thing cost less.
in the end we all are getting paid not near enough to compensate for such high prices on living.
You paid less than £100 for your PS3? Man.. that's a lot better than the £250 mentioned on the other page. All these fabricated PS3 prices are making me want to buy one. :)
qft, amen.
Also, here in the states you can get an 80GB PS3 for $399 and the MGS4 bundle (if it's available) for $499. I think my friend spent around $500 on 2 4850's so he could make his 24" widescreen look it's best. Of course, not everyone needs to spend that much.
so that will be a long time before they both happen
