The gory presentation of Sega's MadWorld is already causing concern among pressure groups.
Pressure group Mediawatch-UK, which campaigns for decency in television, games and films, has begun to lobby the British Board of Film Classification to ban Sega's new
MadWorld game - an ultra gory action game for the Nintendo Wii.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Mediawatch director John Beyer told the
Mail Online that his group does not want to see Sega ruin the family friendly image of Nintendo.
"
I hope the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) will view this with concern and decide it should not be granted a classification," said Beyer.
"
What the rest of world does is up to them. We need to ensure that modern and civilised values take priority rather than killing and maiming people.
"
It seems a shame that the game's manufacturer have decided to exclusively release this game on the Wii," said Beyer. "
I believe it will spoil the family fun image of the Wii."
Sega's
MadWorld is a hyper-violent action game presented in a black and white and red style, similar to Frank Miller's
Sin City. The game casts players as contestants in a violent gameshow where they are rewarded for elaborate and gory murders.
"
Mad World will be suitably age-rated through the appropriate legal channels and thus only available to an audience above the age rating it is given," Nintendo promised.

finally an original core gamer title which gamers and the industry have been crying out for!! :)
These clowns won't be happy until we're all watching The Little Mermaid (I'd be less bothered by this if Ariel wasn't a cartoon) until the god-damn end of time. Gtfo my country :/
Slightly different issue here as Nintendo has, unlike DVD makers, traditionally fought very hard to keep games like this off of it's platforms - both through censoring and refusing licenses.
Anyway i dont beleive in anyway that gorey/violent games affect children in anyway, if they are mature enough to understand their actions have conciquences then violent games wont affect them. i know i played plenty of over 18 games way way before i was 18 and i havent killed anyone
dear lord it's hitting the Sun, now it'll never get released and it will be totally blown out of proportion and it won't get fair coverage!
It's going to be such a shame because the Wii desperately needs a more mature game and some new IP.
I don't necessarily agree with what they are trying to achieve, but i can understand the concern here given the amount of Wii's out there that have probably been bought for younger kids to play harmless games like mariokart. As usual of course it has to be left to the parents to take some responsibility for what they buy their kids.
/facepalm
I thought living in a democracy meant we had the freedom to choose for ourselves what we watch or play. It seems not, there are still groups who think they know best and have the 'right' to tell us all what we should or shouldn't do in our lives.
It's quite depressing really. Anyway, back to GTA4 and killing some prostitutes... which of course must mean I'm a psycho in real life...
What else might they complain about? If Coke started marketing their drink at older people, would they complain that it is spoiling the "youth orientated image" of Coke?
Their argument makes no sense, and totally over-reaches itself.
With the Wii Nintendo has hit a much wider audience than their previous few consoles, presumably meaning that the average age is older. Makes sense to release games for the new, older players, as well as the people who've grown up with nintendo's and would like something a bit darker without having to shell out another £300 on a different console.
And Turok Rage Wars, as I recall, wasn't exactly full of frolicking cherubs and shrubberies.
If a parent isn't capable of deciding whether or not to give their kid something with a nice red '18' sign on the side, then pressure groups really aren't going to help.
Except that, by their very nature, pressure groups tend to be the minority. But they scaremonger enough and wine and dine politicians to get their way.
The majority, 99% of the time, is silent. The majority don't vote. But, unfortunately, this is another thing to remember:
"Silence gives consent."
Doesn't it seem a little odd that Mediawatch is worried about madworld ruining Nintendo's family friendly image, while Nintendo is giving the game a go ahead?
What? WIth all that underage nudity? I wonder how Little Mermaid hasn't been banned yet!

ROFL
Also in reality, even if nintendo are a 'family company' (although which company doesn't sell it self as a family company) It's up to the family to decide what they play and their kids play... The ratings are a method of informing the consumer of the products nature not a way of censoring...
It's comments like this which make me glad I sold my Nintendo for a Xbox 360! Don't get me wrong, I had some fun with it, as did my family and my 4 year old nephews of which I have lots. It's common knowledge that the main problem with the Nintendo is the lack of lack 3rd party developer games available. Not to mention the fact that quality games are sold out for months whilst shop shelves are groaning under the weight of copies of "Game Party". It took my local Game store 3 months to stock Mariokart wii!
Nintendo are doing the right thing in backing this game. More games means more consoles sold!
The Wii is a platform not a family computer.
Thus being a platform why should it have restrictions to what is suitable to the 'personality' of the system?
yes because resident evil 4 is made of rainbows and marshmallows :|
Note that I said traditionally, not consistently. Nintendo let Mortal Kombat get released too btw, but they took steps to limit the gore by changing the colours and so on.
Jesus. Just slap an 18 on it, and require ID to purchase it. I don't see how a game can ruin a "Family Friendly Image". What, are they going to advertise it with playskool graphics, and include a two foot poster that says KID SAFE! with it? Come on. Some groups need something better to do with their time.
it was more aimed at those who cry "think of the children" rather than you, but yeah.
As Joe said, Nintendo has traditionally fought it's own corner as regards gore etc, so given that they clearly see this as a good fit for the console, it has sod all to do with mediawatch.
Rate it, release it. End of. Sigh. The only consolation is that the reactionaries at the mail are the only ones moronic enough to consider this worth reporting.
Also, from the article: 'clammering'? lol. The mail could use a proofreader.
