id Software has confirmed that Hitler will not be appearing in the new Wolfenstein game.
The original
Wolfenstein 3D was in a bit of a different age to the one we live in now - one where it was considered mostly OK to have a massive robotic Hitler wielding four miniguns as the end-game boss. Nowadays such things would be frowned on.
As such id Software has announced that in the latest
Wolfenstein game, there will not be a Hitler boss character. Nazis, sure, but no Hitler. It isn't for the reasons above though id Software's art director Kevin Cloud cares nothing for the tastes and trends of society, he's just saving Hitler for use in the sequel.
"
No, he's [Hitler's] not in our game. We've got to save something for future Wolfensteins," said Kevin in an interview with
Eurogamer.
"
That's one of the cool things again about the Wolfenstein universe: we go back and we pull some of these things from real history and spin this what-if story for some of it, and some of it just kind of blows out."
Kevin then went on to drop a few hints about the plot for the new
Wolfenstein, introducing the Kreisau Circle as allies of the player.
"
The Kreisau Circle originally is more of a group of aristocrats working behind the scenes in hopes to overthrow Hitler. Here, they're gun-toting resistance forces fighting on the streets. But it's kind of nice to take those elements, have a framework of reality, and build it out."
Are you disappointed that Hitler won't be appearing in the new game, or just disappointed that the series hasn't moved in a radically different direction? Let us know your thoughts in
the forums.
Just because Hitler was a douche and is now dead they won't put him in a game?
Discrimination I say! There should at least be a 'ghost of Hitler' or something. Or.. Not >.>
However, upside, new Wolfenstein!
Call the Ghost busters, duh :p
Though, they're not out until some undetermined date in the future.. This could get tricky.
Proton pack? Duh :)
I'd scare it to death.
Is it just me or does that somehow imply that they dont want the story to end to leave room for sequels?
Seems pretty clear from the article.
Also, does Godwins Law still apply, when the article is about Hitler?
should have read the article instead of hitting reply in forum directly, *proceeds to slap self*
what id you not bother to read the article?
I agree, but it would be interesting to see how they use Hitler in the sequel. Maybe he'll be like G-Man from HL.
Because Hitler was alive when they made the first game?
yeh, jesus. don't you know how old wolfenstein 3d was?
/sarcasm
Correct...it ran on a Zuse Z3 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zuse_Z3 and was developed during hitlers lifetime...they just had to wait 45 (how appropriate) years for the first VGA display to arrive...
:D
I'm not sure what part of my post gave you the impression I was even remotely serious..
I'd have loved to have seen that. Hitler in the 1980's would have been hilarious. He'd probably be in leopard print and a black vest, maybe with a faded red bandanna. Maybe in a band as the drummer or the bassist. He might have pulled off vocalist if he worked on singing rather than shouting, since he was a pretty good orator.
But I would pay to see a boss Hitler firing U-Boats out of his arse.
Sounds like the start of WolfenMMO!
