Scan couldn't find a ribbon, so instead opted to use a bunch of IDE ribbon cables to celebrate the opening in typical geek style!
Earlier this month, Scan
announced that it had opened a new and much bigger retail store front. Late last week, we took to the roads and headed north to Bolton to see the company’s new facilities.
Upon arrival, we were greeted with tea and biscuits in the new and vastly-improved shop front before being subjected to an hour of PowerPointery and then being given a guided tour of both the store front and the new, expanded warehouse.
What we saw was impressive and things have moved forwards dramatically since the last time we visited the retailer’s headquarters almost a year ago to the day.
Scan owns several warehouses off site and it will still continue to use these facilities to hold overstocked items, but what it has done is effectively double its on-site warehouse space. The importance of that is that it is where all of the order picking happens and more space means more orders can be satisfied in the same amount of time.
The company’s representatives said that, once the construction and re-organisation is finished, it will enable Scan to push back its cut off times for next-day delivery. We’ve heard various times from several different employees, but what looks very likely at the moment is that Scan will aim to ship all orders placed before 3pm for next day delivery.
Elan III, Shelley and Nelly Raja stand proud in the new Scan showroom.
With all of this expansion in mind, Scan’s horizons are starting to broaden. Elan Raja III, Director of Scan Computers, confirmed the retailer’s move to cater for Irish PC enthusiasts. He said he is expecting to start taking orders from across the Irish Sea sometime in September, although he didn’t confirm if Scan’s complementary free shipping for
bit-tech community members on orders above £25 would apply.

Raja also talked about expanding even further into mainland Europe at a later date, but that’s still very much in the early stages – it’s nevertheless something to keep an eye on in the future.
If you're up in the Bolton area, we seriously recommend going along to have a look at Scan's new store front - there's a whole load of kick-ass hardware out on show along with several demo systems allowing you to play some of the latest games. What's more, there's also a BMW Sauber F1 car and free WiFi - what more could you ask for?
Discuss in the forums
We get free shipping on orders over £25 from scan.co.uk?
Why was I not informed of this earlier? I've been using Ebuyer for free shipping...
Thanks, Joe.
wow, F1, did Rich drive it there?
What a crock.
Anyway, the forums revamp is cool. I'm looking forward to what comes of it!

GG
Other than that, Scan have been very good. Just dont believe them when they tell you something is in stock.
And as for a retail presence in Bolton.... erm.... ??? look at your ordering books and see who places the most orders to you (and where they live). I would be amazed if the region was anywhere near Bolton. South East...... Milton Keynes or London preferably !
This =]
Agreed... there's nothing down south :(
who cares, deliveries arrive next day either way :p
Id still like to try before I buy :D
Its also nice to have a browse, and once you order your latest £1.5k mega machine, a few days seems like years (I know...)
Same, when I ordered my 'Dream pc' a couple of years back, they held around £1k of stuff, for a £4.50 fan, which I didnt mind since I also ordered the motherboard from novatech that hadn't arrived. However, when the fans came back into stock, something else was no longer in stock :S
I've never tried Scan, but microdirect have a fairly flashy showroom, and crap service. Aria are in the same boat - pretty reasonable showroom, but the order process is a long and slow affair. :(
Dont get me started on Microdirect. No exaderation, it took almost 9 months to get a refund on a faulty hard disk. They messed me around so much for such a long time.
I used my work phone to call them because it was costing me a bomb. They stick you on hold for hours. I left the phone on loud speaker and ended up being on hold for no more than 5 hours and then the guy answered and hung up on me.
Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never Never again.
worst customer service in the world. Im happy to use scan from now on when they sort the free postage out, which still doesnt not link Bit-tech accounts to their site.
to be honest, some people (like me) live in places where there are no pc shops where you can buy up to date hardware, so of course some people will love the idea of scan opening a bigger retail shop just for the idea of a pc parts retail shop existing regardless of quality.
