Ice, Ice Baby!
This week we’ve been in humid Hong Kong covering a sporting event of far more significance than the upcoming Beijing Olympics – the Asus Advanced Overclocking Championships.
With twenty teams from as far afield as the USA, South Africa and Portugal facing off against each other to achieve the highest overclocks and using some monstrously extreme cooling apparatus and ultra high end hardware, it has been on geek-tastic event.
Monday was competition day, and after seven hours of liquid nitrogen soaked, high-end GPU destroying action; it was China that emerged victorious. Sweden placed second and Portugal survived a replacement processor to snatch an impressive third at the last minute.
However, with the competition side of the event concluded (and in-depth coverage coming soon) today promises to be truly interesting as the teams mount a co-operative attempt to break the world record scores in both 3DMark 2006 and 3DMark Vantage.
With a near endless supply of Asus GeForce GTX 280 TOP graphics cards on hand and over 40 highly experienced overclockers armed with some of the most sophisticated processors and private liquid nitrogen cooling setups in the world, don’t be surprised if a few records get broken today.
Rumours abound of a tri-SLI liquid nitrogen cooled setup that could well deliver on the claims of a new world record and European overclocking teams will be in the thick of the action donating their expertise and hardware to lift the coveted benchmark crowns.
Do you still see benchmarks as an indication of system performance? Just how cool do you think Liquid Nitrogen cooling is? (

This is modding, people. It is about taking computer hardware beyond the ordinary. It's fun. You do remember what fun is, do you?
he has got a point there, everyone runs 3Dmark just for a laugh, and some people take it too far and start thinking that is all that matters.
3Dmark is actually the reason i upgraded from a FX5700LE to a 6800GT back in the day, mind you my old FX5700LE was lag tastic! my poor 6800GT was pushed to it limit until after 2 years of balls out speed it died. i had it clocked at 425Mhz for so long when i went to clock it again i thought it was the stock speed! custom overclocking via bios mods, ment stock speed was 425Mhz, it blew at 460MHz after 2 years on water. how i miss it!
Sure, I'd love to have an awesome rig like that... but to use it... not to say I could get an incredible score on 3DMark..
Making a contest out of it seems.. pointless..
The very nature of Chip manufacturing means that a competition like this could be won just by luck..
The points is thats its Fun.
Just like racing cars. To ur standarts there is no point to it.
But its fun to push hardware to the limit see how a group of ppl work together and can achieve something.
Ofcourse not everyone is able to do that like the pros. But people will imitate it slightly in the real world.
Like having fast cars with turbo chargers. Imitating the look of drift/race cars with body kits.
Might not be practical but its a hobby, and its considered fun, puzzeling, challenging and unique.
Boxing, Soccer, Football, Racing, even when you play FPS games.
Sounds like someone is the biggest "i hate everything that i can't have".
People are doing it with cars, Boats, Bikes almost anything for decates. Pushing hardware to the limits. All those things require geeks also. Who Will design the engines the body frames and suspensions. Exactly geeks. So whoever says this is a place for loosers competing(think of what you are using ur daily car) is a complete :(. You should rather do nothing and rott to death like [USRF]Obiwan says.
w/o competition there is not inovation w/o inovation there is recration w/o etc etc we won't move forward in anything.
And we be still cave people...
Even though i don't know anything about over clocking, it is amazing to see a ice tube and laboratory equipment strapped onto a motherboard and make a CPU go 100%+ the speds it was designed for. Look at that picture is like they Froze everything to one piece lol =) Awsome.
Best replay ever
Also, liquid nitrogen makes your drinks very cold, very fast - FACT!
mis-use of professional equiptments FTW! :)
Asus is also ATI manufaturer, but why don't they supply ATI card such as 4870x2?
because then we wouldn't see any records broken duhh xD
I AGREE
but completely fukin cool
as i remember, ATI cards gives the best benchmark scores. nVidia cards gives the best minimal FPS (at least that's the 8800GTX days)
It's about time you looked into "practical" phase-change cooling systems available for $800 provide a chilly -35oC CPU temperature, the self-contained system includes all regular mounting brackets (AM2+/LGA775 etc) although the unit is independent of the case it does offer "practical" ultra-sub-zero CPU temperatures.
The Prometeia Mach II comes to mind right away.
These competitions are cool but I wish they would give away as much hardware as they destroy!
