The latest Knights of the Old Republic game has been confirmed by EA and BioWare as a new MMO.

EA and BioWare have officially announced a new Star War: Knights of the Old Republic game at E3 2008. A third KOTOR game has long been rumoured but this is the first confirmation that EA has given on the subject.

The mega-publisher didn't just stop there though, going so far as to confirm that the next KOTOR game will also be a massively multiplayer online RPG - making it the first Star Wars MMO since the ill-fated Galaxies.

The announcement was made by EA CEO John Riccitiello in a brief interview with Portfolio.com.

"We've got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development and the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about -- in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry at the point when we get closer to telling you about it," said the ever-slippery Riccitiello.

Thankfully though, Portfolio got straight to the point and flat-out asked the EA super-boss if he was referring to a new KOTOR game. The answer?

"Yes," he said.

There are no real details other than the confirmation, though EA has hinted that the MMO is part of a move to target the PC market more and sidestep consoles.

"Increasingly, people are going to be talking about direct-to-customer in our business," said Riccitiello. "I think we'll be talking about it louder than most."

I would much prefer they make Kotor III as i've never really been into all this MMO stuff, i think i'm not alone in wishing they would make the third one and give us a great ending to revans story.

Agreed.

Although I could never get KotOR II to not bug out on me. With or without patches, there was always some gamestopping bug for me somewhere in the game. :(

As long as they get rid of the turn-based combat, it's all-good. :D

Agreed.. That's what put me off KOTOR in the first place. I only played it because I liked being an arsehole to people... But the fighting system evetually pissed me right off the game.

If they can get it right in this (like they, sort of, did with Mass Effect), I'll probably get it.

I thought the combat in ME was brilliant - just the right balance of RPG and FPS/3rd person classic action.

It was good.. But not great. Could have been a little more solid, if you know what I mean..

Feck KOTOR altogether, bring out a Jedi Academy II MMO so I can swing my saber around

This could either be really really good, or really really bad imo! Hmm! :P

I read something about this a while ago, where bioware were saying they had many ideas on how to bring storyline into mmo's in a meaningful way etc. It could be interesting, bioware are up there with blizzard in my mind, love their storylines.

you don't know how bad Sony Online Entertainment messed it up. EA can't make it worse it is not possible!

Play like Jedi Academy or GTFO.

The idea of getting on line and clicking "attack" to swing a lightsaber sickens me.

SWG Day 1 experience = SUPERB. After Sony repeatedly bashed it with the Nurf Stick over and over again, it turned into a gooey slightly smelly substance slightly resembling a MMO.

If they can make a KOTOR MMO into what Galaxies should have been, I'm all for it. Getting bored with WOW anyways, and by the time this is out, I'll have determined if warhammer has sucked out my existance or if I'm reserving that for another MMO.

Finally! Was hoping the rumors were going to be real.
Quote Bladestorm 18th July 2008, 15:27
Could be done right, if they handle it well (unlike galaxies, and particularly where sony took that in the end)
Quote E.E.L. Ambiense 18th July 2008, 15:33
The main thing to consider here is that it's Bioware. And EA seems to be leaving them to do what they do best. I have high hopes for it. I loved the original KOTOR. Loved the second even more, due to the streamlined interface and better work. I'll love this one, I'm sure.

I hope I can make another city like I did in SWG. I also had the best looking house in the city :D

Yeah SWG was a very good game.

I dont understand lightsaber combat in mmo. one direct hit and your DONE FOR. a glancing blow and you lose an arm and have to get a mechanical replacement. hell if you drop the thing it would mess up a star ship (see robot chicken, prolly not cannon but close enough)

This is news that many Galaxies fans (past and present) have been waiting for. SWG started with good intentions, but fast went downhill. Bioware will hopefully do this justice!

they really need to know when to stop with this Star Wars franchise.

Yes it was great waaaay back in the days but starwars has had its time in the sun and its over. Look at the countless movies made from it, the prequels, all those pointless starwars games throughout the years and now that new animation movie Clone wars which is destined to fail I think, Its getting ridiculous.

I really would like to meet the people that are spending money on these games, please let them die so hopefully we can get something new out of these companys instead of the same rehashed crap.

Iv loved star wars was even as a fan I have to say stop now please. Its totally milking the franchise beyond belief.
Its making me really sad to see this franchise go down the pan...even though I feel its too late for it.

wtf?

this is KOTOR, not some shitty battlefront/rogue squadron we're talking about.

even so MMOs are usually shitty grindfest and have no emotion in comparison to real RPGs. i can't see this being any different.

Considering how loved this franchise is, i'd be impressed if it ever just suddenly ended.

I read this in another forum months ago that they were making KOTOR into an MMO but was just a rumour so now it is true. I also heard in the same posting that the MMO will be targeted for both consoles and PC for one big MMO where console players can play simultaneously in the same realm as PC players, but according to their statement quoted above, it looks like it will be PC based only.

I recall the rumour originally circulating October last year, this further confirms that the rumour is indeed true!

Alright cool, well I guess theres all sorts out there that enjoy different games. Im just in the opinion that the franchise has been pushed too far.

If they made quality games/movies then it would be a different story but its been milked beyond belief which is why I think they will continue to spurn out whatever makes them some money as fast as possible with the least effort possible.

They had a franchise that had such a big following - you think they would pay more attention on preserving the quality of the franchise;

Take blizzard for example - World of warcraft is big now but iv followed it since its early conception and throughout its betas and release. I dont play the game now but you dont see them really milking it in the same way. Any games that have been released have been of quality and well thought out.

Its just a shame I cant really say the same for lucasArts because financially they were bigger and stronger and yet they havnt done much with that except make something good enough just for people to buy it and thats it.

I have always liked star wars but it feels its just been milked far too imho.
Quote JFE 19th July 2008, 18:39
yes KOTOR ftw... oh its EA? ****, hope they don't ruin this game like they did with mass "hyped" effect

The new star wars games aren't really based on the series, they're based on the expanded universe, which is huge. KOTOR 1 and 2 were excellent games.

Quote Dreaming 21st July 2008, 10:52
KOTOR the first one was amazing, developed by Bioware. (As was Neverwinter nights).

Then KOTOR 2 and NWN 2 were developed by Obsidian Entertainment, a fledling dev studio. And they messed both up, they were both 'good' but not as good as they should have been. Kind of like going from the first spiderman film to the second one. And of course, plenty of game breaking bugs in both. A pattern is emerging then, Bioware make a great game, then the publisher or whatever decides to get a different dev team to make the sequel, and it really doesn't deliver.

Now that Bioware is back in the driving seat... I expect great things. But then I have a sinking feeling it's going to be a pay monthly affair :(
