The latest Knights of the Old Republic game has been confirmed by EA and BioWare as a new MMO.
EA and BioWare have officially announced a new
Star War: Knights of the Old Republic game at E3 2008. A third
KOTOR game has long been rumoured but this is the first confirmation that EA has given on the subject.
The mega-publisher didn't just stop there though, going so far as to confirm that the next
KOTOR game will also be a massively multiplayer online RPG - making it the first Star Wars MMO since the ill-fated
Galaxies.
The announcement was made by EA CEO John Riccitiello in a brief interview with
Portfolio.com.
"
We've got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development and the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about -- in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry at the point when we get closer to telling you about it," said the ever-slippery Riccitiello.
Thankfully though, Portfolio got straight to the point and flat-out asked the EA super-boss if he was referring to a new
KOTOR game. The answer?
"
Yes," he said.
There are no real details other than the confirmation, though EA has hinted that the MMO is part of a move to target the PC market more and sidestep consoles.
"
Increasingly, people are going to be talking about direct-to-customer in our business," said Riccitiello. "
I think we'll be talking about it louder than most."

Agreed.
Although I could never get KotOR II to not bug out on me. With or without patches, there was always some gamestopping bug for me somewhere in the game. :(
Agreed.. That's what put me off KOTOR in the first place. I only played it because I liked being an arsehole to people... But the fighting system evetually pissed me right off the game.
If they can get it right in this (like they, sort of, did with Mass Effect), I'll probably get it.
It was good.. But not great. Could have been a little more solid, if you know what I mean..
Give them time. It's EA... of course it can. ;)
you don't know how bad Sony Online Entertainment messed it up. EA can't make it worse it is not possible!
The idea of getting on line and clicking "attack" to swing a lightsaber sickens me.
amen, brotha!
AMEN!!!!!
hey wait, that would be like Age of Conan with Star Wars mod........... :p
If they can make a KOTOR MMO into what Galaxies should have been, I'm all for it. Getting bored with WOW anyways, and by the time this is out, I'll have determined if warhammer has sucked out my existance or if I'm reserving that for another MMO.
I hope I can make another city like I did in SWG. I also had the best looking house in the city :D
Great whit a star wars mmo.
Yeah SWG was a very good game.
Subscription Fees: ...do not want.
I don't think there is any more room.
Yes it was great waaaay back in the days but starwars has had its time in the sun and its over. Look at the countless movies made from it, the prequels, all those pointless starwars games throughout the years and now that new animation movie Clone wars which is destined to fail I think, Its getting ridiculous.
I really would like to meet the people that are spending money on these games, please let them die so hopefully we can get something new out of these companys instead of the same rehashed crap.
Iv loved star wars was even as a fan I have to say stop now please. Its totally milking the franchise beyond belief.
Its making me really sad to see this franchise go down the pan...even though I feel its too late for it.
wtf?
this is KOTOR, not some shitty battlefront/rogue squadron we're talking about.
even so MMOs are usually shitty grindfest and have no emotion in comparison to real RPGs. i can't see this being any different.
Considering how loved this franchise is, i'd be impressed if it ever just suddenly ended.
I read this in another forum months ago that they were making KOTOR into an MMO but was just a rumour so now it is true. I also heard in the same posting that the MMO will be targeted for both consoles and PC for one big MMO where console players can play simultaneously in the same realm as PC players, but according to their statement quoted above, it looks like it will be PC based only.
Alright cool, well I guess theres all sorts out there that enjoy different games. Im just in the opinion that the franchise has been pushed too far.
If they made quality games/movies then it would be a different story but its been milked beyond belief which is why I think they will continue to spurn out whatever makes them some money as fast as possible with the least effort possible.
They had a franchise that had such a big following - you think they would pay more attention on preserving the quality of the franchise;
Take blizzard for example - World of warcraft is big now but iv followed it since its early conception and throughout its betas and release. I dont play the game now but you dont see them really milking it in the same way. Any games that have been released have been of quality and well thought out.
Its just a shame I cant really say the same for lucasArts because financially they were bigger and stronger and yet they havnt done much with that except make something good enough just for people to buy it and thats it.
I have always liked star wars but it feels its just been milked far too imho.
The new star wars games aren't really based on the series, they're based on the expanded universe, which is huge. KOTOR 1 and 2 were excellent games.
pc players always have the advantage due to custom mods been the main one. And mouse is always faster
problem being?
>:D
Then KOTOR 2 and NWN 2 were developed by Obsidian Entertainment, a fledling dev studio. And they messed both up, they were both 'good' but not as good as they should have been. Kind of like going from the first spiderman film to the second one. And of course, plenty of game breaking bugs in both. A pattern is emerging then, Bioware make a great game, then the publisher or whatever decides to get a different dev team to make the sequel, and it really doesn't deliver.
Now that Bioware is back in the driving seat... I expect great things. But then I have a sinking feeling it's going to be a pay monthly affair :(
