.ME TLDs available today

The .ME registry is now open for business, but all the best domains are already registered - as per usual.

ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, has officially opened the doors for registration of .ME domains today.

With .ME registration available immediately, it's a first-come first-served landrush for the best domains. If you were hoping to get something catchy, however, you might be a little late: trademark owners have been able to reserve domains since May, and reservations for domains from members of the public have been allowed since June. According to figures released by the official registry for the new TLD approximately 30,000 registration requests have been received so far. With an 'average educated person' having a vocabulary of approximately 20,000 words it's fair to say that the really memorable verbs are long gone.

Where the registry has received multiple applications for the same word – quite likely in the case of popular words like 'to' and 'with' – or where the registry believes there is a 'high value', the relevant domains will be auctioned off rather than sold outright. While this smacks of organised domain squatting, it's their TLD so it's their rules.

The .ME domain, in common with many other 'repurposed' GTLDs like .tv, started off as a country-specific top-level domain. Assigned to Montenegro after it gained independence in June 2006 by the ISO 3165 Maintenance Agency, the domain holders quickly applied for delegation rights in order to monetise what is clearly a desirable suffix. The official decision to allow delegation was given in September of last year, which allowed the government of Montenegro to repurpose the TLD as a generic namespace. The Montenegro-based joint venture doMEn is the current official registrar for .ME domains.

Will you be attempting to snag your own little bit of .ME internet space, or is it one generic TLD too many? Share your thoughts over in the forums.

couldnt. care. less.

just another tld money making scheme nobody in their right mind cares about. we have enough tld's to confuse, use, and abuse as is.

so have they conned the montenegro government out of the tld or do they buy it off them? i hate all these sufix's personally, any type of website looks a bit amateurish to me if it's got like .tv or now .me after it, if its not a well known one its rubbish

Eeerm... Neither. The Montenegrin government is responsible for the sale of the domains, and has appointed a Montenegrin conglomerate to handle the day-to-day registrar duties. The bulk of the money will go to the doMEn to handle running costs and get some tasty profit, and the remainder will go to the government - possibly in the form of a tax.

Well I took a .me.uk domain for my own surname when they came out and it will do for my main email for ever or close!

i wonder how long it was before f***.me was taken. ooooh 2 seconds.

I'm happy with my .eu domain
Quote ParaHelix.org 17th July 2008, 14:37
I feel its just another of those domain extensions which no one 'really' wants. It's like owning a ".boring" domain name and I couldn't care less, I have a .org (www.ParaHelix.org) domain, yes, one that actually means something...organisation which brings me tio the question, when we eventually move to IPv6 there is going to be a MASSIVE shortage of domain names, which possabley means more of these ridiculous extensions if we done want to remember names like www.WeCantGetaShorterDomainNamrBecauseTheyHaveAllBeenTaken.com

****.me

ICANN are considering opening up TLDs, so instead of .com, .co.uk, .net &c, you could have .anything .at .all for when they bring IPv6online

I was thinking the same thing.. although the do.me and bugger.me are good suggestions as well.. guess that goes to show how dirty my mind is ;)

Bet you they will not allow it though.

I bet they would, for money, I'm sure its one of those that got many requests and will be auctioned off to make even more money from them.

ICANN may have allowed .me, but popular places like 123reg and Easily aren't selling them.

Interestingly, sod.uk.com is still available, though sod.eu has gone.

I'm not so sure about that, Godaddy are.

okay i dont get it we can have all these odd extensions and yet they dont make a .XXX ??? I mean really they should make a .XXX and make it so that all those types of sites have to register under that and only under that and all existing ones go bye bye and that way it makes parental controls and what not more effective.
Quote airchie 17th July 2008, 22:06
Agreed, xxx domain is long overdue.
Quote will. 17th July 2008, 22:28
It was discussed, but declined. With the announcement that we will be allowed to make them up ourselves however they may decide otherwise.

I'll be getting www.will.iam something of similar cleverness :p
Quote LordPyrinc 18th July 2008, 01:48
In the long run, who really cares about what domain your website address ends with? Let me suggest a few domains that my new company would offer:

.bs (be sarcastic), .wtf (wellness through foraging), .fu (feeling urban), .pwn (people wearing neckties), .rofl (read only fantasy literature), .brb (bring real beer), and .omg (organic microwaveable goodies)

What is this IPV6?

Basically, IPv4 (The one that is currently standard), is running out of addresses across the internet (101.32.43.180 etc), whereas IPv6 has virtually an unlimited number of them. It's been in the pipeline for a few years now, but I have a feeling the main problem for it will be the implementation, as it would require many routers to have firmware updates, and older operating systems will not be compatible without additional support

Vista is prepared as standard, and XP can have the protocol installed. As for other operating systems I'm not totally sure.
