The new 60GB Xbox 360 model will ship with a wireless pad, wired headset and one-month Live subscription.

The new 60GB Xbox 360 model will ship with a wireless pad, wired headset and one-month Live subscription.

Microsoft has officially unveiled the new Xbox 360 SKU, confirming rumours which have been circling for the past week or so about a new 60GB variant of the standard Xbox 360.

The new SKU will ship with a 60GB hard drive included and will sell for $349 USD, or £179 GBP depending on where you want to buy it.

This new 60GB model will on on sale in the US and Canada early this coming August and will phase out the current 20GB model, production of which is now ceasing. The 20GB model will be reduced to $299 USD (£151 GBP) to help shift boxes while stocks last.

Microsoft will be bundling the new 60GB model with a wireless gamepad, a wired headset and a one-month subscription to xbox Live. The new 60GB model will also ship with an HDMI port.

"We know consumers need more and more space to store the amazing digital content Xbox 360 offers, and we're giving it to them at no extra charge," said Microsoft's Albert Penello, Xbox director of product management.

"No one device offers the depth and breadth of entertainment that Xbox 360 can deliver, and now you'll have three times the storage to manage all that great content."

Shipping dates for the new model in Europe are yet to be announced, but Microsoft is expected to offer details in a press conference at E3 later today. Until then you can let us know your thoughts and predictions in the forums.

All the reasons to buy an elite just vanished, did they really just 'undercut' themselves?

Ah well *strokes elite* .. 120gb might be useful if/when they allow game installs... /pray
Quote cjoyce1980 14th July 2008, 11:31
hopefully the elite will get an upgrade to 250GB then next.....

....and game installs to hdd, i cant really see the point, do the loading time well bother you? its a necessary feature for the PS3, but not the 360
Quote PQuiff 14th July 2008, 11:36
Id would be happy if they fixed teh RROD and teh worn out DVD drives. /pray
Quote BlackMage23 14th July 2008, 11:38
Why can't they just do what Sony did with the PS3 and let you change the drive yourself?
I'm not a big fan of Sony but that is one thing they got just right.

It would not be that hard to have an adapter that lets you drop in a new drive.
Quote Veles 14th July 2008, 11:44
That's a better size, 20Gb was too small, 120Gb is a bit OTT

Shame they're not replacing the arcade with the 20Gb and making the 60Gb the new premium/pro. The 360 needs a hard drive IMO. If you haven't got a hard drive on there then you're not making the most of the console and might as well have stuck with a PS2/Xbox/GC.

In other news, my gf will probably be a bit pissed if she hears this, she's just bought a premium off the bay for 130ish.
Quote shigllgetcha 14th July 2008, 11:50
they are probably trying to keep the integraty of the gamerscore/gamerid. im sure if it was put onto a normal HDD it could be transfered to a computer and tampered with, and this wasnt an issue as the PS3 id's didnt have the same points system.

but yeh being able to use a normal HDD would have been alot better

Because they make an obscene profit on the add-on drives, which they're not keen to lose. Sony, on the other hand, took the hit in order to make the PS3 more appealing.

Hmm, still wary about the RROD issue but if they have solved it them I might just be tempted and I think this is a more sensible disc size.
Quote Bauul 14th July 2008, 11:57
You'd think they would have quietly sorted the RROD out, but then again, this is MS...

So.. will these 60GB SKUs have the 65nm Xenos Die shrink?
Quote Mother-Goose 14th July 2008, 12:09
What else is coming with new SKU, die shrink? better cooling?

At least she didn't buy it brand new for £200. You can always buy a new HDD.. I intend to buy the 120GB soon.. or the 60GB if it is released separately.

It's a shame theres no games coming out for it now.. Gears of Wars 2, Fable 2,....err....Halo Wars
Quote kosch 14th July 2008, 13:11
They really should make an xbox 360 with a built in wireless adapter.

Red Ring of Death.

Pray you never get to see one.
Quote rollo 14th July 2008, 13:29
arcade should be removed doesnt really follow there total expereance as it lacks a hard drive

20gb was useless space wise
60gb is still too small for hd movie content
120gb is about as small as id use for the content if they did eventually offer hd movie downloads.

Prices for hard drives for 360 are obscene.

Microsoft needs to release its next big game or its gonna get drowned.

GOW 2 needs to be exeptional, Fable 2 not expecting alot from. And im done with Halo. Spore and little big planat are what i think will be big hits this year ( sales wise)

both "next gen" consoles are now outta games for a while. GT 5 is some way away . Same with gears of war 2.

Roll on new consoles already please

I'm not 100% agreed, 20Gb is fine for someone who doesn't have loads of games and stuff. For my gf, 20Gb is more than enough, she likes playing Halo 3 matchmaking so she really needs more than a memory stick, but she's not going to go and download HD movies and stuff.

60Gb is fine for 99% of xbox users, you only need 120Gb if you're downloading LOADS of HD movies and content.

Also, what the hell? This generation has barely gotten started. So GoW2 and GT5 are a ways off? A new console generation going to cure that? No way, there's plenty more to gaming than AAA titles, and a console takes around 6 months before there's actually some worthwhile games for it.

The xbox360 has a nice feature, its called Red Ring Of Death, a nice red ring lights up once you get it, so you know its time to rma (yet again), the main cause is the crappy cooling ms used to make sure the 360 console makes less noise than the competition.

you didnt really believe consoles are cheaper than pc's? they give you a heavy discount on the console and then get the money needed to make a profit from the accessoires and games.

does this version ship with the new smaller gpu die?
Quote Jojii 14th July 2008, 16:58
my understanding was the falcon transition (which these new sku should utilize) reduced the heat to the point that the rrod failure is not an issue for most users.

And about time, my mate's having to send his Elite back for a second RMA due to red ring, after having his other ordinary 360 die on him

Anyway: frankly I am not bothered at all about the bigger HDD. HD movies on the 360 don't look as good as Blu Ray and I can rent at that price at Blockbuster anyway. All the other stuff either doesn't take up much room or is tat like demo's that I can delete after a month or so

If MS offered an upgrade HDD for say £25 I might think about it, but I very much doubt they will
Quote johnmustrule 14th July 2008, 18:45
60gb is just not enough! I've nearly filled it on my PS3 and that's not including movies, I have the 120gb elite but hell would freeze over before I can justify spending money on a service that is free for every other system other than mobile phones! Thankfully I can upgrade my PS3's hdd without losing my warranty.

Yes .. and the optical drive is not only loud but its the first part to wear out (not fail like the thermal gubbins) leading to increasing loading times... They're quite clever with the 360 load times but I'd still rather run the game from the HDD - I guess they will never allow 'no disc' playing which would be the ultimate conveinience.
Quote rollo 15th July 2008, 00:37
im a pc gamer at heart naek who buys the consoles for the odd game. 250gb on pc is around £32 including vat delivery, I could get a teribite of space on pc for same cost as 120 gb hd/

agree on the no disk playing p3n. 360 load times in places are quiet bad. but that isnt due to lack of hdd instalation thats due to the crappy dvd drive they installed. That sounds like rockets taking off
Quote mikeuk2004 15th July 2008, 00:46
oh god, what is the point?? Why dont they just keep the 20gb model and let you unlock it and upgrade it to any size drive like the ps3. THere is no point bringing a 60gb to the market, consomers are going to get even more confused than they all ready are.

Im now thinking of upgrading my 20gb drive as its filling up with games taking up 600mb a piece. But 120gb drives are far too expensive to make it worthwhile.

Wonder how much they will charge for their propriety 60gb hard drive.
