2.40 PS3 update withdrawn, may brick PS3s

Sony has pulled the 2.40 firmware update for the PS3 after reports that it has bricked consoles.

Sony hasn't had it good over the last twenty-four hours and the console making giant has had to withdraw the new 2.40 firmware update for the PlayStation 3 after claims that the update is bricking many consoles.

The update was one of the most anticipated firmwares too, adding in an in-game XMB, as well as trophy support for some games, and though these both sound like good things many PS3 gamers have been disappointed by the lack of retro-support for the trophy system. If you want to unlock any of the achievements in the game then you need to play the game all over again.

Meanwhile, not all developers are signing up to the trophy system as eagerly as others and Insomniac, the developer of Resistance: Fall of Man and Ratchet and Clank, has confirmed that it has no current plans to add trophy support to either games.

Not that it matters hugely - Sony has been forced to withdraw the update for the time being anyway as many PS3 owners are claiming that the update has rendered their console little more than a paperweight for some reason.

Sony is currently looking into the problem and is hoping to find out the cause soon, but in the mean time the update is unavailable to all those who haven't downloaded it.

As if that weren't enough, it seems that some wily hacker found a way in to Sony's US website overnight and replaced the God of War and Singstar game pages with some anti-virus scareware scams. These have since been corrected.

All in all, not a very good day for Sony.

Have you had your console bricked by the new PS3 update, or were you lucky enough to get it without error? Let us know in the forums.

Thankfully, I didn't get the time to run this update. Previous updates have been flawless for me, including those for the PSP - seems strange that this one is causing problems.

Just a bit of a 'whoops' there :B

blimey, poor sony. reports suggest that even with the release of mgs 4 the wii still outsold the ps3 by nearly 60% in june, and that's WITHOUT a killer must have AAA title!

I tend to be a bit slow with the firmware updates - when a game needs a newer firmware, I'll update. Not before. So I'm running whatever firmware ships on the MGS4 disc. It's when stuff like this happens that I'm glad I avoid being bleeding-edge on consoles. On the PC it's easier to fix if something goes wrong. Well, normally... ;)

Mine updated fine.... I think, XMB is a bit slower in game than I would have hoped
Quote shigllgetcha 3rd July 2008, 13:50
im sure its just a small thing that can be corrected quickly.
usuall tho that it got alway the way to being released and then found out it caused problems

seems alright to me so far, the in game xmb seems pretty smooth. is there anyway to roll back to a previous update or is it erased everytime theres an update?

As with the PSP, there is no (official) downgrading.
Although it is possible on the PSP using some files on the memory stick, and a software-modified battery.

I really do not like the idea of 'Trophy's', xbox live is full of nob-heads that use their score as a reflection of how good they think they are.
They play games just to get the score regardless of the quality of the game, it makes for gamers that are rude to casual gamers and is not what online gaming is all about?

How often have u seen someone kicked in a lobby for having a low score? and or for instance in rainbow six vegas having a low rank?, in many cases people are good players that do not find time to level up like others, or do not have the time to put into the game, should they be left out?:(

shame they don't make unbrickable consoles.....

The closer consoles get to PCs in terms of hardware and architecture, the more touchy they'll be. :) A bad BIOS flash will result in a 'bricked' PC, but enthusiasts will find ways around that (like hot flashing) but someone who doesn't dig around the guts of their system with regularity wouldn't have a clue how to do that. The problem with consoles is that they're closed systems - so we're all effectively the '(wo)man on the street' who has to send the computer back to Dell if it breaks.

Although, equally, because consoles are a closed system where the hardware doesn't change from system to system the way it can do with PCs, this sort of thing should have been picked up during testing. No excuse there, Sony.

Yep, that is quite baffling to me -- the entire benefit of a closed system was the fact that the devs could *almost* guarantee the code written would be 100% compatible. But I suppose even tho it's a "PS3", the various 60gb, 40gb, MGS editions, etc, might have some small amount of difference, enough to cause some silly code bug.

Shame. I had a flawless update. Would be nice to know what the majority of bricked console versions were..

I'd imagine its probably related to themes which aren't controlled by Sony or something the user has that couldn't be checked as clearing the HDD allows the PS3 to boot up again, so its not truely bricked in the sense that your PS3 is broken never to return.

Mine runs fine on 2.4.

Best to backup your system before updating the softwrae in future just in case it ever does cause issue.
Quote koola 3rd July 2008, 15:53
Mines been running fine and it's quick too. I'm sure it will be found and patched soon.

The PS3 is closer then the 360 to that. With the PS3 corrupts you can just replace the HDD and reformat it. The 360, if the firmware screws up your console has no chance of recovery except for sending it in.

Anyways my PS3 runs great with 2.40. No issues.

This is probably just as simple of an issue as to many downloading the files from the same server at once.

yeh it bricked mine, tried evrything i know, got girlfriend to ring, cos live in spain, and not that good with language, so they said send it back and they will replace it, problem is, this takes 5 weeks, i can't wait that long, now formatting the HD, does this work, i am not bothered about losing data, as only have saved games on it, but do not want to come into problems doing this, as not sure what to do exactly, and what cable i need, to plug from HD to comp, anyone give us a clue of how to do it, and if i try and mess it up, if i can do anything else, to mess it up more than already is, will this void the warranty, help please

the portable console known as Pandora is unbrickable.... or so they say....... or use a dual bios system....
Quote sandys 3rd July 2008, 16:49
The HDD takes standard SATA cables from a modern PC so you can plug it into your PC no problem thats how I've cleared mine in the past prior to putting it in an external enclosure when I upgraded to a 250GB in my PS3.
Quote sandys 3rd July 2008, 17:04
BTW have you tried resetting the PS3 by holding down the power button until it bleeps and resets?
Quote lewchenko 3rd July 2008, 17:15
Ive read on multiple forums that formatting the HD on a PS3 will solve this problem if yours was unfortunate enough to be bricked. As previous poster says... you can connect it to a PC easily.
Quote rollo 3rd July 2008, 17:26
theres a very easy way to fix this

put the hard drive in a pc and format it . And it will all work again. Rather simple to fix. its sata drive so you will need the cable ( all modern pcs have this)

have 2.4 installed on mine no issues at all. As for wii sales . Wii is something you can go in shops and buy without to much thought . Ps3 and 360 never will be.

once consoles go above the 360 and ps3 expect the hardware to get more and more touchy as to what you can do on it. Also upgraded my ps3 with 250gb harddrive took all of 10 seconds. cost £33 (360 120gb is £99.99 ex vat (£117.49)) you can get 1 tb for £81 ish. Would love to upgrade my 360 hd just as easy . But theres no way on earth im paying £120 for 120gb of storage space.

sales figures for japan are enough to make Microsoft cry

Nintendo sold 235,990 units of its Wii
while sales of the PS3 came to 139,494
Xbox 360 trails the pack, with sales of 10,964 units.

go 360 go. Dont think an ms console will ever sell well in japan. Would like to see total sales for japan of all next gen hardware. If anything is close to the Wii in japan by even 50% id be shocked. Japan people go for crazy stuff.
Quote sandys 3rd July 2008, 17:37
360 is now cheaper than Wii so you can buy it will little thought to be honest.

There is a ps3 gaming lounge in bournemouth called gamestadium (i'm not advertising) that has at least 3 bricked ps3, i downloaded the update then played bad company, it just froze, would not work, reset it and black screen thats 1 down.
we had a gaming night of cod4 so about 30 ps3s had the newest firmware and wouldn't dl on about 6 of them
Quote identikit 3rd July 2008, 18:30
Yeah people who say their PS3 is working fine with 2.40, touch wood quick! Mine was working fine then it bricked today and now won't support proper resolutions.

The Wii would have outsold it by way more if MGS4 hadnt been released as the week it was released the PS3 sold about 20K - 30K more consoles than the Wii and more than double the number of 360's sold. The thing that really hurt sales for the following weeks were that Sony didnt ship enough 80gb and limited edition systems as they were all supposedly sold out and stores said they could have sold way more. I heard they were shipping the 80gbs again this week or so. Sony should have thought that one through a little more I guess.

Anyways, about the firmware, I dont get why they would retract it. Its not like the majority of people are having problems with it. Its maybe 1% of PS3 owners at the most. It just seems like there are so many people with problems as they make a big thing about. But we always hear this whenever any big game comes out (MGS4, GTA4, COD4) and often with firmware updates.

Also it hasnt been restricted to just on version of the consoles. So have been 60gbs, some 80gbs. Im not sure about the 40gbs.

Whatever.. Hope they release it soon. Currently the InGame XMB isnt too amazing as not many games support some of the features so I can live without it until they re-release it. Just hope its soon :)

EDIT: Thee 2.40 Update is now online again and available for download. Supposedly there was nothign wrong with the firmware. What caused problems was on some peoples PS3s it did not download correctly so when it installed it was corrupt.

Now that I think about it, many people ive seen with the problem used WiFi to download it. And im pretty sure in the PS3 manual it says you should use a wired connection for downloading updates.
Quote leexgx 4th July 2008, 14:44
well thats is daft the update should do an checksum on the update (or something more advance) and not try and do the update blindy
