Can a new Driver game overcome the faults of the old series? Only time will tell...

Ubisoft has been revealed to be working on a new game in the Driver series, with work already underway at the Reflections studio in Newcastle.

Perceptive readers will have noted the the careful wording there - 'has been revealed to be working' - because although this news is based on footage from a visit the BBC paid to the studio, Ubisoft spokespeople claim to have no knowledge of the game according to Eurogamer.

Regardless, the video looks authentic to us and the presenter in question clearly reveals that the Reflections studio, which is best known for the other Driver games, is owned by Ubisoft and is working on a new game in the series.

The footage from the report has brief glimpses of some of the cars currently being designed and seems to indicate that the series is being designed with more of a cartoony and less-realistic feel to it.

It's definitely known that Ubisoft owns the rights to the Driver franchise, having bought the game from Atari back in 2000 as CEO Yves Guillemot wanted to get Ubisoft into the racing game genre, but until now nothing seemed to have been done with the license other than that Sony hinted a PS3 version was in development a few years ago.

Would you be excited to see another Driver game, or did Driv3r leave a sour taste in your mouth thanks to poor spelling and awful handling? Let us know in the forums.

..Wait, what?

Wasn't Driver canned after that abysmal Driv3r thing?

Useless.

We already have GTA, and Mafia. Mafia II will come out in early 09 and piss all over GTA IV and this 'saints row' thing, we don't need another crappy sandbox car GTA clone game.

I thought the driving was awesome, but thats about it...

I loved the original Driver on PC. Driving around, smashing into cars and walls, causing insane crashes and then making a movie out of it. It was the director mode which really made that game awesome.

I totally wanted to go to Reflections to do my Work Experience for School (in 2004), since I live in Durham, but I ended up going to my mum's office at the council. :(

Yea, I hated how they ruined it with random injections of running and shooting. Didn't really work did it.

Ubisoft however seem to be intent on re-inventing quite a few franchises, so I'll reserve judgement until some of them surface. PoP is the main one I'm keeping an eye out for.

Yes. Totally and utterly 100% agree. The original Driver was awesome. I loved that game. What was really hilarious was that my grandmother liked playing it! :D

So what about Ubisoft's POD racer then?
Quote Gunsmith 19th June 2008, 14:58
yeha POD was alright, be interesting to see how they remake it if they were to try
Quote wuyanxu 19th June 2008, 15:26
if they get back to Driver1, where it's all about the driving. it'd be a superb game: police, driving, gettaway and time limits.

no guns, no walking and no crappy bikes. just cars and cars!

ohh, by the way, for driving games, me wants TopGear test track to be featured in a game

What was wrong with driver 3?? I thought it was a great game and enjoyed it very much. I hated driver 1 and 2 and never played the last one.
Quote wuyanxu 19th June 2008, 20:06
the last driver, Parallel Lines was great during driving parts. enjoyed every moment of that.

but non-driving parts are garbage, IMHO, driver should stick with what it says on the tin: driving.

Will it be artificially flooded to simulate wet tracks?

GTR2 has it already, and can simulate rain/dry/cold/hot with any car you can find for it ;)

You have the coolest grandmother ever.

I couldnt bare playing driver one because of the rediculous loading times, it was like 20 seconds gameplay and then 3 minute loading. I spent more time watching a loading screen than playing the game.

Oh ya, I remember reading about that being made by someone. That was a long time ago. The guy had been working on it for a long time. Or is this included with GTR2?
Quote Shadowed_fury 21st June 2008, 04:40
Not included, usual modder contribution like 95% of GTR2 lol

I top that with a request for Gunsai touge at the Gunma cycle complex. Honestly, Top Gear's test track is largely for the simple minded because it lacks a number of fundamental features for a good track, such as subtle traction fluctuations from road undulations or varied-radius corners:
