Call of Duty 5: World at War will be set back in World War II in the Pacific theater.

Call of Duty 5: World at War will be set back in World War II in the Pacific theater.

It isn't a huge surprise - in fact, let's face it, it's exactly what we expected - but an official follow-up to last year's Call of Duty 4 has now been unveiled. Call of Duty 5 is a go.

According to reports from the latest issue of the Official Xbox Magazine, the new game will be titled Call of Duty: World at War and will be developed by Treyarch, not Infinity Ward.

Call of Duty 5: World at War is going to eschew the modern update of Infinity Ward's recent game and will instead take the game back to the roots of the franchise, which is either a good or a bad thing dependent on how resistant to change you are.

World at War will be set in the Pacific theater during World War II, which begs the question of why the game isn't called Call of Duty 5: World at War, Again.

According to the report from Xbox Magazine, Treyarch is planning to make the game more of a survival horror experience than other games in the series by exploring "the darkest corners of WWII...tackling darker themes" and ptting players against "a new, seemingly alien fighting force."

Infinity Ward, who did sterling work with Call of Duty 4 have not explained why they won't be developing the next game in the franchise.

Lets just hope the game doesn't end up all Warrior Within meets Predator, eh? Tell us what you think in the forums.

Ouch...that sounds like a step backwards.
Quote Mankz. 9th June 2008, 13:55
I said it was going to be in the Pacific didn't I...

Aliens? Whatever.
Quote Lepermessiah 9th June 2008, 14:01
Milk that cow, and no infinity ward? No thanks, COD4 was crap as it is.
Quote Redbeaver 9th June 2008, 14:02
i hope they meant alien as in a unique, unknown fighting force.... but still human...

...instead of... yknow... ALIEN............. :(
Quote DougEdey 9th June 2008, 14:04
It's always been odd numbers for treyarch and even numbers for Infinity Ward, I was hoping that IW would get exclusivity since they had such a roaring success with COD4, but I may rent 5 in case it's better then COD3...
Quote Daniel114 9th June 2008, 14:05
I think they just mean that there going to be looking at how the Japanese fought
Quote will. 9th June 2008, 14:07
Treyarch really don't do a good job with the COD games... I think I'll be skipping this one.
Quote PQuiff 9th June 2008, 14:07
hmmm..snore....

By alien i take its gonna be Japanese , not Japanese mutant Godzilla space hybrids?
Quote Jack_Pepsi 9th June 2008, 14:08
I'll still get it, but I'm disappointed it's WWII.

:(
Quote TurtlePerson2 9th June 2008, 14:09
So if they're going to try to portray the Japanese as an alien, hardly-human fighting force, then I think that they have complaints to look forward to. Look what happened when the RE5 trailer had African-looking people in the trailer and those people weren't even African. I'm not sure if this is going to go over well.
Quote Panos 9th June 2008, 14:10
If it's a good game who cares :)
Quote DarkLord7854 9th June 2008, 14:17
Alien..? Hmm.. Reminds me of that other FPS.. What's it called.. Crysis.. >.>
Quote Orlix 9th June 2008, 14:23
Nooo.. They mean Alien as the Japanese are on foreign soil so the need visas, otherwise they would be illegal aliens. :)
I really hope they do not try to do a Crysis...
Quote Tris 9th June 2008, 14:35
hmm, not convinced - i was hoping for another hop into the future with the next one, not a step back and "lol aliens".
Quote MiNiMaL_FuSS 9th June 2008, 14:45
oh dear, sounds terrible, I still liked COD2 the best, 1 was good, 4 is very good but completely diferenty.......and i honestly dont even remmber 3?
Quote DXR_13KE 9th June 2008, 14:49
as long as it is not as lame as pacific assault...

sorry, It had to be said, Infinity Ward did a good job on the Games they did themself, I'll never understand why they let someone else do in betweens that have the potential to taint their repuation in a negative way.
Quote Nikumba 9th June 2008, 14:59
Sorry but wont get that, we have spent the last 5-7 years with endless WW2 games CoD4 was a breath of much needed fresh air, to go back to WW2 seems entirely pointless.

I for one wont be getting this, as if I need WW2 game i have enough of htem as it is

Quote MrMonroe 9th June 2008, 15:47
Damn. I owe someone $5 for calling it as a Korean War game.
Quote Krikkit 9th June 2008, 16:04
Infinity Ward managed to make probably the best game in the series, and certainly one of the best FPS' in the past few years, and they get turfed aside to make another, probably distinctly meh WW2 shooter.
Quote hix 9th June 2008, 16:07
What Treyarch really meant was that we'll be fighting the Japanese army which is gonna be the first in the series. Despite the harsh remarks on COD3, I doubt most of you actually played it after reading it's reviews. FYI, it's not that bad. Hell, I thought it was pretty damn good for what was essentially just another WW2 shooter. Just that it's nothing inventive or revolutionary. More like an 8/10 but hey, it's still fun.

Lets see how Treyarch will depict the Pearl Harbor attack and compare it to EA's promising-ended-up-lackluster MOH Rising Sun's Pearl Harbor level.
Quote Krikkit 9th June 2008, 16:10
I played CoD3, and it was crap.
Quote BigD79 9th June 2008, 16:10
I'll reserve judgement till I’ve played, you never know it may be great! Just hope Treyarch can build on the progress made by COD4.
Would be interesting to see if they can bring out the feel of fighting an “alien” force (in the non-Crysis sense of the word.).
This sounds tedious but bare with me. I was a mates wedding in February and spoke to one of his mates who works for Activision and was over in the States for training and "saw COD5", didn't say it was being played, or if it was in the Pacific (I asked) just that is looks "cool, like COD4" and was in WWII. Just thought I’d throw that in there!
Quote Delphium 9th June 2008, 16:44
Ughhh more WWII style play, tbh, getting a little boerd of the WWII style, I have quite enjoyed CoD4 with the moden weapons SA80, P90 anyone :D
Sounds a step backwards to me, but then id rather another WWII than yet another set in the future with unrealistic guns.
Quote outlawaol 9th June 2008, 16:49
hmm Interesting...

Lets be realistic though. When you create a FPS, it generally entails some sort of war (other then the make believe world of GTA). And what is more convincing then real weapons on a real playing field? This is what drove a really great story in COD4 (at least to me). Games that create super hero characters *cough* crysis *cough* need super villian type bad guys to even the playing field. When you go back to the basics of good Vs evil, these games always seem to take the same stage, cause its the only themes that are realistic.

Crysis would have been awesome, yet it isnt. COD4 WAS awesome, yet it has a story that cant be rivaled. So in one camp you have the latest greatest technology, with no story that seems feesable at all. And in the other you have great story with realistic expectations.

I for one love the realistic over the fantastic. Aliens over real story? Give me real story any day....
Quote HourBeforeDawn 9th June 2008, 17:04
Ya I for one am glad that they are going back and doing a Pacific Theater they should have done that before going to this modern day crap.. but I hope it will be decent like COD1 and 2.

There will be co-op for the first time in a Call of Duty. Also there will be vehicles and squad-based elements to the multiplayer... they have the CoD4 engine running on the Wii apparently

Also some grusome stuff about how the game starts out...

Quote Jojii 9th June 2008, 17:55
maybe infinity ward has a better project to work on? one can always hope.
Quote johnnyboy700 9th June 2008, 18:04
Was it Treyarch that made CoD3 for the consoles? I never tried that version so I don't know what their work is like, can anyone comment on CoD3?

Personally I think Infinity Ward did a great job with the CoD series, I reckon that the Medal of Honour games haven't been the same since a big chunk of the delopment team left to form Infinity Ward. I didn't like Pacific Assault and I didn't much care for MoH:Airborne, one aspect that really annoyed me was if I shoot someone twice in the head at close range I expect them to die, not get back up again!

I'll give CoD5 a bash when it comes out, even though the alien comment does make me pause for thought, I won't touch another MoH game.

It's not up to them but to Activision

COD4 was an immense 5 hours, then the online was excellent (talking about PS3). Now that it's changing studios I hope it stays as good. And lasts more than 1 day.
Quote Mentai 9th June 2008, 20:16
Weren't infinity ward working on cod4 since they finished cod2? That seems to have worked out well for them, creating the most successful game of last year and all. Just skip the odd numbers if you have such high standards :)
Quote Ghys 9th June 2008, 21:09
then why not release 1 game every two years instead ? Oh right, money...
Quote donnie 9th June 2008, 22:46
I'm a bit worried tbh as Treyarch only released cod 3 on consoles which seriously miffed the pc followers of the series, i personally have never played that iteration but i haven't heard good things about it. I think this is a bit of a step back in terms of the series but i think i may enjoy going old skool on the jap's well slight unintentional racism aside this may end up being well done as cod4 stepped up the bar and i dont think they would risk blighting their good name again.

I just hope that cod6 is the dog's Cojones, maybe they will pick up with soap and leave the us out of it.
Quote freedom810 9th June 2008, 23:58
If IW dont make it, its not the true CoD

Quote specofdust 10th June 2008, 00:25

How lame....

Has EVERYONE forgotten about Grey Matter? The only developer to get their CoD game perfect.

Come on guys.. United Offensive! It had the best multiplayer of the series... And the best singleplayer.. It was just the best.

Alien-like does not mean an Alien, it means something you are totally not used to etc.
Quote Yemerich 10th June 2008, 13:11
Cod4 Was (at least for me) the best FPS since a long time. Crysis is a lame game.

What they mean about "something you are totally not used to" (AKA. alien)? I mean, what is so diferent from germans, terrorists to japaneses? I hope they mean the pinched eyes because ALIENS as it it i first thought would be as lame as Crysis... It would be the CRISIS of COD franchise...

But perhaps IW is busy making another game, but i think that "team that is wining, we don't change"...

This year will be creepy! Beth developing Fallout, Ubi developing Farcry and now this... Will nintendo develop "Sonic"? ooo... already did...
Quote Gunblade 11th June 2008, 06:54
So infinity ward isn't doing this title? Well then we have another crappy COD3 basically for the console systems only.
Quote donnie 11th June 2008, 09:44
I just found out that treyarch only had a year to do cod3 which shows but they have a full 2 years to finish this project so lets hope they don't balls it up.
