Blizzard is constantly considering a complete graphical reboot for World of Warcraft.

In an interview released earlier today by Eurogamer about the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft, Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard has said that a graphical overhaul for World of Warcraft is very probable.

World of Warcraft producer J. Allen Brack said that a complete reworking of the graphics in the game is needed and is probably going to happen in the future.

Brack confirmed that Wrath of the Lich King will enable some extra effects for high-end gamers, but that it will not include a full reboot of the graphics for the entire game. That reboot is definitely being discussed though.

"That's actually something we talk about every expansion," he said. "I'm positive we'll talk about it next expansion."

However, Brack did say that such reboots had not been successful for other MMOs in the past and that games like Ultima Online and Everquest had actually been damaged by the process.

"A lot of people continued to play with the original client, because it was faster, or they preferred it, or were just used to it or whatever," he said. "And so for me as a game developer, the idea that we would spend so much time and energy on something and have people go, 'meh, that's not really for me,' that's not very exciting."

What do you think of the graphics in World of Warcraft? Let us know in the forums.

As long as the game performs the same on low you will be ok. You can out your low end gamers.

It is potentially a huge risk but if pulled off right it could bring even more players to the ever growing community.
Personally im all for it, i like the gameplay and the graphics dont bother me so if they feel like changing go for it i say.

Considering the target audience (Everyone) a major overhaul of the graphics engine could crap on a lot of customers of theirs.

I'd want to see it, but I don't see it making me want to play it. Eh. Could be interesting to see, if anything.
Quote naokaji 19th May 2008, 13:29
WoW to get a graphical overhaul? will they finally stop the neon green hello kitty with flying spikes madness and make it look like a actual game with a target audience above age 6 - 9?
Quote p3n 19th May 2008, 13:44
They wouldn't be able to update anything other than textures on the environment else people running lower detail would have a different landscape etc to interact with Oo
Quote sotu1 19th May 2008, 13:51
simple solution is surely to just have a high end graphics engine and a low end engine? two seperate products and see how they fare?
Quote loler 19th May 2008, 14:06
Is about time, when you play a game with the same graphics expansion after expansion you get bored because game doesnt look that attractive anymore, it happened to me on FFXI played 3 years then quit, I cameback after last expansion and I saw the same old boring graphics instead atleast for something more attractive, thats just my opinion.
Quote Mister_X 19th May 2008, 14:12
I welcome progress and wouldn't mind seeing an overhaul. But to be perfectly honest I don't think theres anything wrong with it as it stands. The cartoony style works for the game.
Quote ChaosDefinesOrder 19th May 2008, 14:40
The best way to do this would be to have the new graphics as an OPTIONAL patch, both interoperable with each other, and with a downgrade option for people who find they can't run the "patch"

Alternatively have an "Enable next generation content" option in display options like Tomb Raider Legend

The key being interoperability and choice of use!
Quote Scirocco 19th May 2008, 15:30
Although I recall some people having problems with the huge graphical engine update in original EQ with the Luclin expansion, for most it was quite welcome. The character models looked much, much better and were liked by the majority of people I played with at the time. The only problem it really presented was for people with lower-end machines and a raiding environment. Fortunately it wasn't difficult to switch back to the old interface if you were going to raid.
Quote HourBeforeDawn 19th May 2008, 15:31
oh so you mean just maybe WoW will no longer be the kiddie crappy cartoony look.... hmm maybe just maybe I will consider playing it then.
Quote Juppun 19th May 2008, 15:35
Provided they let players continue using the old graphics, seems possible. If CCP could do it for EVE, I'm sure Blizzard can pull this off.
Quote Xen0phobiak 19th May 2008, 16:25
The optional EVE Online premium graphics pack was/is well received.
Quote MrMonroe 19th May 2008, 16:30
If it's not optional, they will see a huge negative reaction. And really, why bother? You've already got millions of players, it makes literally billions of dollars, why expend money trying to improve the experience for people with high-end machines when those players are obviously already happy?

If it's a ploy to get new players it won't work for long: anyone who jumps on the wagon these days finds out very quickly that there is an almost insurmountable gear hump at the high end of the game. They'd be much better off working on a new game and letting this one just become a refuge of people who have been playing since before BC.
Quote Ryu_ookami 19th May 2008, 16:31
and them updating the graphics has nothing to do with warhammer online coming out I take it just a coincidence i think not
Quote Brett89 19th May 2008, 16:35
if it's not optional, people in large cities will have their FPS go to crap, this computer can't hold 60 fps in shatt, or IF back in the day.
Quote DriftCarl 19th May 2008, 16:40
this sort of thing is best left for WoW2
Quote Jamie 19th May 2008, 17:04
A lot of people I know had serious frame rate problems in some of the 40 man instances when the going got hectic. I don't think a graphical update is the best way to go but I'm sure it would be well receieved by a few if it was optional or really scalable.

Yep. Back when I used to play on my radeon 9600xp I would always get a some VERY seriously slowdown..especially in the suppression room in Blackwing Lair.

In regards to a new graphical 'style' .. I think that's a mistake.. I like their style the way it is... this is purely a subjective topic.. a lot of people will have widely different opinions here, but I think that it's better left to WoW2 as well.
Quote cyrilthefish 19th May 2008, 18:12
Like has been said, they could just provide a checkbox for 'standard' or 'enhanced' graphics.

And as well as that, the hardware reqs are not set in stone anyway. They are higher now than before the expansion, i know at least one person who had to upgrade his PC just to run the expansion pack

the only thing that'd need to stay the same is the raw terrain data: ie. they could add higher quality meshes as well as bigger textures, but the pathfinding ability of the game would need to be the same in both graphical versions... (if that makes sense)
Quote ssj12 19th May 2008, 18:17
So basically they will probably move the max graphics card needed up a generation or two. The current graphics will probably become lower settings.
Quote AcidJiles 19th May 2008, 18:32
as usual a boring game will still be boring with better graphics

A graphical upgrade would be fun, as long as it can be accomplished smoothly. I'd like to see more options to customize characters, and some better animations.
Quote Nikumba 19th May 2008, 21:27
They could go the route CCP did with Eve, and release a Premium client, that has all the fancy effects, giving the users the option of either running the standard client, or going with the Premium graphic content.
Quote [DE]FreD_S 20th May 2008, 00:40
An Overhaul of the graphics would be nice... some detailed models... WITHOUT hands that look like they could kill you with a single whack... but before they do that, they should fire their item designers... armor & weapons are looking worse and worse :-( Best graphics in the world are useless if the items in the game look like crap...

graphics wont be updated i dout till wow 2 or whatever

The fact 80% of the player base is running on something close to minimum says it all really
Quote Drachnem 20th May 2008, 17:48
I would love to see a new grafix overhaul I use my massive pc for mostly wow so I'd like to make use of that.

This "unique artistic style" that everyone's raving about hasn't really changed between Blizzards Starcraft and Warcraft franchises for almost 15 years. Nothing new.
Quote rollo 21st May 2008, 13:35
all blizzard games are designed to run on low end equip

Id expect to see starcraft 2 have some very low system requirements. Since blizzard wants to sell to mass market. Not 1% of it with uber kill systems
Quote Mr_Sinister 21st May 2008, 16:27
I am all for it as i love the game, but the Graphics's are a bit on the low end now, and a update would be nice to see.
Quote boggsi 29th May 2008, 14:17
the optional thing is mentioned in the article though. he said its not an attractive prospect for developers to work on if its only going to be used by 50% of people. if done right it could definitely be the kick that game needs. more annimations of characters and reactions in mobs would make the grind more fun!
