Grand Theft Auto Online - possibly the best idea in the history of gaming?
According to rumours circulating on the internet,
Crackdown developer Realtime Worlds has just bought back the rights to the
APB MMO game it'd been making after selling the rights to a Korean publisher.
Realtime Worlds, which was founded by
GTA creator David Jones, had been working on
APB since the release of
Crackdown and the game was basically being billed as an online version of
Grand Theft Auto.
Now though the rumour, according to some insider sources cited by
Eurogamer, is that Realtime Worlds has bought the license back so that
APB can be re-badged and sold to Rockstar as a ready-made
Grand Theft Auto Online game.
Why Realtime bought the license back from Korean games publisher Webzen is currently unconfirmed, but given the recent release of
Grand Theft Auto IV and the fact that Realtime worlds has a history of replicating the success of the
GTA franchise, it certainly looks likely.
Realtime Worlds is currently keeping schtum on all these rumours of course and has said it only bought back the rights to the game to "
give themselves some options".
Are you excited by the idea of a
GTA MMO, or are you simply bewildered by the number of acronyms on show here? Let us know what you think in
the forums.
me neither. it better not happen, i hate how everything MUST be multiplayer now, it ruined COD4, and MMO is the worst sort.

Well after a quick google APB either means:
Auditing Practices Board, which i think would make a rather bad game
- or -
APB, seriously that's the entire name of the game but it does stand for something and that something is: All Points Bulletin
Although this is the first I've ever heard of it, which is weird considering wikipedia says "APB was planned as early as 2005"
EDIT: too slow :(
Actually... A lot of GTA's missions are essentially WoW type quests :p
Go here, kill that, collect this, come back.
It already fits perfectly!
Yeah, I think you might be on your own with that one.
edit: yeah so i also missed that someone already answered this
NOT Rockstar. David Jones is the original mind behind GTA, he knows where GTA belongs, and as such APB is set for a PC release.
Do you think Rockstar would bother with a PC release? It wouldn't be as easy to just do a sloppy port a few months later of an MMO.
RTW, please, do not let Rockstar ruin a game I was otherwise interested in.
GTA MMO could be good, there's a massive fan base and lots of potential and ppl have been screaming for one for years. However, what concerns me is this: It's obviously going to be an 18 game, or 15 at the least, and ideas like racism, violence etc will be particularly prominent in the game. Now while i'm ok with this in a single player game...we're bringing this stuff online. players are probably more likely to see that kind of behavior as socially acceptable to other people. It's one thing to be a ba*tard to a game, it's another to do it to a person, even if they are online, especially in a game that constantly promotes these kinds of behaviours. It's not so much the violence I'm worried about, it's the attitudes of people I'm concerned about.
I know I'm gonna get flamed for this and told that games get left in games and that people should not buy games like this for kids...but yeh just a little concern of mine.
go ahead. flame me.
It's a lot like MDK really.
Well what does THAT mean?
While that is quite true, it would be a shame if they introduced horrible mechanics like grinding enemies to get levels and reputation and having to do 4 hour raids to get the rare gun and crap like that. Although I doubt a GTA MMO would ever turn out like that.
MDK means Master Da Kontrols or Miner Discovers Kryptonite according to the adverts IIRC
No he isn't, I think it's awful too.

What a game MDK2 was.

LOL could you imagine? It would be like a massive riot going on 24/7! You couldn't get anything done! (of course they would find a way to get around it)
exactly, I shoot someone, someone shoots me, I respawn and steal a car but get shot while trying to steal it. fun...
TBH, I never understood the appeal of the GTA games to start with, but that's just me. Nothing like a good wholesome game chocked full of doing illegal stuff to entertain the youth of our great planet. My bet is that this MMO will be full of teen and pre-teen players whose parents are TFS (too f**king stupid) to make a good judgement call on what type of game they buy for their kids.
thankyou. And tris, the reason behind that, and WOW, is best summed up in the manner of House- Everyones an idiot.
If they didn't bother with the multiplayer and put all of their effort into the singleplayer, they would have had something unrivaled in brilliance, instead, some of the singleplayer missions where a bit, well, less awesome than the rest of them. If they were all up to the quality of the first mission on the boat and the sniper mission then it would have been flawless.
COD4 is a terrible multiplayer. They have some serious balancing issues with the weapons, such as the nade laucher- click mouse to gain frag, and don't get me started on the martyrdom perk, aka the single dumbest idea in a game ever
agreed but ... that's because you have played on public servers only. When it comes to competition, the game is just as good as cod 1 ans 2.. too bad it,s all about fcking search and destroy though
anyway, back on topic... I wonder how they could actually make a GTA MMO that is not completely chaotic with everyone just driving over other players and raping prostitues in the middle of the street ? (said that way, this game would be completely insane)
after thought. - With the idea of multilayer being so popular. i do enjoy them. but i also have dial up at my house. so i think if a company comes out with a single player game, there should be a single player first. or do them to gather like normally. but with mmos, its normally a 5 minute single player then online for the rest.
