Doom 4 is in the works. id Software is hiring. Now, we'll just give you chance to recover.
Doom - it's pretty much the cultural grandfather of PC gaming and though games like
Wolfenstein 3D technically beat it to the finish line,
Doom has long been regarded as the first truly modern FPS, responsible for bringing multiplayer to the masses.
Now, despite the mixed legacy of
Doom 3, id Software has announced it is working on a fourth game in the series.
According to a press release fresh from the mailbox of id Software CEO and co-founder Todd Hollenshead, production of
Doom 4 officially started today and the company is looking for fresh talent to help create the game.
"
Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth," said Hollenshead in the release.
No other details have been given, but for the story we're betting it's going to be something along the lines of certain
Doomed space marine going toe-to-toe with all manner of hellspawn in areas predominantly constructed from shadows.
While the common assumption seems to be that the game will run on the id Tech 5 engine, we have to say we wouldn't be surprised if Carmack and co. pull something entirely new out of the box instead. The
Doom franchise certainly deserves something a little bit special and if anyone can knock our socks off then it'd be id.
Excited about
Doom 4? Maybe you're looking to
apply for a job with id and want to work as a level designer on the game? Either way, let us know in
the forums.
I really liked DOOM3
Good to see it's fairly poor sales and legendary pre-zero day piracy haven't discouraged ID from heading back to mars.
this is great news
hopefully we can get some mars surface action looking at tech 5 (dark version of serious sam would be pretty cool)
i hope they really pull out all the stops on this one
and team missions on the mars surface would be great
ID software are still cool by my book....
Even the rooms that had working lights in them had some amazingly dark corners. Some night vision would be nice.
I for myself hate Doom3.
Bring on D4, I'll definitely buy it.
I do hope though they hire the guy again who did the music for doom 3
Oh and please no toning down of violence just to get a lower age rating or avoid bans in countries like germany.
OVERJOYED!!!
this news has certainly cheered me up! I genuinely didn't think that a new doom would be coming and I am totally looking forward to this!
My thoughts: Keep the game dark as hell, give us a flash light with unlimited battery (maybe prone to flickering or something) or if you really got the balls, don't give us a flash light. or night vision. , give us beautifully macabre, give us hell on earth! Give us less ammo, you feel a lot less scared when you got every gun full to the brim with ammo. Team segments will be nice I'd love to see a baron of hell utterly tear an entire team apart, but i still think of doom as a mostly solitary experience. and no bloody vehicle sections like quake 4, they won't fit in.
I guess one of the questions thats gotta be raised is will it be more demanding than crysis is? Id got a reputation for that sorta thing. really can't wait....
Fool me twice, shame on me.
I wont be buying Doom 4 unless the reviews say its a triple A classic Must Buy. I bought Doom 3 on nostaglia (Doom 1/2 whilst at university). Doom 3 was a demo for an indoor graphics engine providing your game was corridor based with zombies hiding in dark areas both in front of, and behind the player. That *was* the entire game. Sucked hard. Oh well.
Prove me wrongabout Doom4, and I *may* give you some money ID.
I'd love D4 if it had the same initial 'feel' as Doom or Quake had, though I suspect you won't see that anymore as those two games pretty much defined the 2d fps/sprite based genre and then the 3d based fps genre.
Anyhow, fingers crossed that for all the ££ id will spend on developing the game, they don't run out of funds such that they can't afford to code a few extra light bulbs in there! ;)
We need wide open spaces as well as enclosed ones
I personnally didn't have any problems with Doom3, apart from the occasional moment of being scared ****less and leaping out of my seat. Hope Doom4 is just as good if not better.
well, the story (I know, doom and story doesnt really go together but anyway) of the doom 3 expansion basically ends with not much left to do a sequel, which in combination with the more open area's the engine will allow as you mentioned bascially leads to one conclusion for me, in doom 4 we will go to hell it self.
True, but the there was no real transition between Doom 1 and Doom 2, it was a totally seperate invasion that just happened to include the same lead character. And forgive me, but didn't you go to 'hell itself' in both Doom 3 (you get the soul cube there) and the expansion pack?
Doom 4 should be good.
