Epic's Mike Capps sure isn't a big fan of Nintendo's massively popular Wii console.
Epic's President Mike Capps isn't the world's biggest fan of the Nintendo Wii, we think it would be fair to say. Speaking at this year's New York Comic Con, the President of all things
Unreal hammered home just how awful he thinks this whole motion-sensitive thing is.
"
It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on," Capps told
IGN.
"
Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. Obviously there's a class of people who really love it and enjoy it and are getting into the games but I'm still waiting for that one game that makes me play it."
Hmm - the man does make some compelling points. While Nintendo has certainly opened up the Wii as the most accessible console with games like
Wii Sports and the upcoming
Wii Fit, the hardcore gamer has been a little undernourished lately.
Super Mario Galaxy is all well and good, but the games need to be a little more regular perhaps.
That said, the Wii is a remarkable step forward for the games industry and Capp's reasoning that there'll never be an Epic-made Wii game because "
we go forward, not back" does seem a little mean.
What do you think about the Wii? Revolutionary console for the masses or gimmick-based Gamecube for the foolish? Let us know
in the forums.
UT3
Gears of War
...
the wii does need more serious games and i love playing on the console, but there is just no substance in most wii games to keep you playing, that is till super smash bros comes out :)
The thing is that "class of people who really love it and enjoy it" will probably never buy an Epic game and honestly who can blame them.
When you start making games of the constant quality of Nintendo, then u can say that kinda stuff, the wii is my fav console of the bunch, so screw you Mr.Epic....
It's a fun console, something you switch on to fill some time and have a laugh, I'm having great fun playing Mario Kart Wii as graphics don't matter just gameplay.
For TF2, COD4, CS and the like I'll switch on the PC.
Andy
Its a console aimed at the casual gamer market, the consoles price and games reflect that too. I'm not too sure about it being as viral as he says, not one of my friends has brought one yet.....
FUN!!!!!!
The only console I own at the moment is a DS lite but with the amount of spare time I have now if I were going to have another it would definitely be a Wii and from the looks of Mario Kart, that might be sooner than later. I am not sure if there are many other games I would get for it though but hey, we shall see what happens.
I've completely lost any respect I had for them
I agree with what rastus is saying, the Wii isn't like a normal console so shouldn't really be judged in the same way PCs and other consoles are. It's not really designed for locking yourself in a room and playing on your own or going online and pwning noobs. Yeah there are some games that allow that, but the really great games are the ones that don't try to be a normal game on a weird controller. When I go round the friends house with a bunch of mates, if we play games it's usually Wario Ware or something similar and it's ludicrously good fun. A lot of people pass the Wii off as a party console, what the hell is wrong with that?
Personally, the Wii was the first console I've ever been compelled to buy. It sits next to my computer and is used socially when my little bro and friends drop by. When I'm in the mood for some serious gaming, I fire up the computer. I thought people would have got it by now, that the Wii is strongest when playing games with other people in a social environment.
Translation: We need to compensate for sub-par gameplay with shiny graphics
In these areas, the Wii is setting back game development by a generation by lacking the power so actually make notable advances. That is a fact.
The wii simply appeals to a broader market. This bloke from Epic doesn't seem to get that.
Wii forces the developer to concentrate on gameplay, which is far more difficult to get right than graphics are. I'm not saying that every game on the Wii has great gamplay, far from it, but none of them have pretty graphics to fall back on.
I'm all for shiny graphics, but if the gameplay is a bit shabby, then all of the bling in the world isn't going to make it worth playing. This obsession with cutting edge graphics is just getting silly. Just look at how many games in this thread are >10 years old
same here and good point.
what Epic missed is fun gameplay and easy to use menu. who are they to say if they cannot get their root platform right? and how can they criticize Wii when they can only boast about their UE3?
get a life and get some clue, people don't want super rich graphics like UE3, people want cool games like Rayman Raving Rabbits (yes, i play this more than UT3)
So in your point of view, the only real advancements have to come in the form of graphical and technological achievements?!
Also developers have/had a really hard time to code games for the PS3 since the HW was so different and new. In the case of the Wii, devs could just continue to code as they did for the GC ( to some extent), and still have a different platform to work with, which now gets 20x the userbase the GC had.
IMO Epic are GFX engine builders/sellers that come up with different skins for every iterations of the same engine since the original UT.
Also, Epic's statement makes me think of the kind of comments that narrow minded people make when they get cornered in a conversation they can't handle (you know the kind of people that think that "You know what you're wrong and you suck" is a valid argument).
And they even try to make us believe that GoW is the way of the future WTF!!! I played that PoS on the PC since I got that for FREE, and even then I thought that it was the most linear/railed game I've ever played. Freaking waste of time.
Also the Wii was able to bring back Square/Enix to the Nintendo camp, and that's no small feat in itself. The devs are popping new games steadily right now so the wild usage swings users might experience now will long be gone come summer. With games like The Force unleashed and Boom Blox and such entering the Wii market, I'm curious to see what platform will garner the best sales for the multi-platform games coming soon.
So in a nutshell moot point for Epic, again.
Sorry, honest mistake, but again, I still believe that Nintendo is doing great things with the new console, and they try to appeal to every market segment they can (Manhunt 2 anyone?).
my friend number to play super smash is axel 4983-5055-2848
But seriously he's missing the point of the Wii. I'm pretty sure Nintendo have done the right thing with both the Wii and the DS by breeding a new generation of gamers by making games simple again. We've all grown up on games and remember consoles that had only 2 buttons and FUN games. A good story to illustrate this is that i cant get my GF to play PES2008 on the PS2 as there are too many buttons, but if i crack out the old Sega Megadrive which has a total of 3 buttons she's well away. If you then look at the Wii it has half the number of buttons and worse graphics than the 360 or PS3 and yet its alot more fun to play. Including numchuck, I count 3 main buttons, 2 kinds of waggle, 1 point, 1 d-pad and 1 joystick, now this seems alot but if the designers have done their job properly the waggle and point should seem natural to the game. If you then contrast this to the 360 or PS3 there are 4 shoulder buttons, 4 (6 for 360) face buttons, 2 joysticks+click and 1 d-pad which is alot more to remember if you're just starting out playing consoles.
I'm sorry if that was kinda long winded but basically, games are too complicated and rely too much on graphics now to be really fun. Who remembers how much fun Golden Axe and Streets of Fury were? Remember how bad the graphics were and how few controls we had? The obvious proof that these games are still as good as modern ones is the flourishing virtual console markets currently. But can you really say that 10 years from now you'd be re-buying the current generation of games?
If i've made any errors please inform me, there's a good chance i've miscounted buttons or got names wrong.
Comrade! we should take their profits for the betterment of the people!! we should punish these capitalist pigs for being so crafty and cunning. they are practically stealing our money when we walk into the store and hand over our hard earned cash for their product. man what trickery, what slide of hand.
oh man, socialism rhetoric at its best.
congratulations to Nintendo, i am happy they have designed a product that public is gobbling up. i hope the guys in charge of the wii project make MILLIONS! they deserve it, they have allowed Nintendo to earn billions and re-insert themselves into the console race.
think about it, they could have gone the PS3 route. they could have expended their entire R&D department on shiny cases and fancy GPUs. what did they choose to do instead? they took a risk on developing something new. which ended up paying off rather well.
congratulations Nintendo.
that guy is probably just "butt hurt" because his company designs games for "typical consoles" like the xbox360 and PS3. with steady surge of interest for the wii, which uses games no where close to what his company produces, i am sure he is worried.
think about it, you own a company which produces product W. you see another company develop product V. while much like your own product their product is slightly different in that it appeals to a wider market. kids, parents, aunts, uncles, and even grandparents are wanting to purchase their product while only a small corner of the market wants yours.
its just a simple sour grapes complex, someone should give him a blanket and warm bottle before he gets too fussy.
However, it is still the best social games platform, and the platform with the most inginuative (however that's spelt) games
a lot of the game on 360/PS3 are available on PC (and could easily made to be) and also most of the games would benefit from a Keyboard & Mouse
However, the wii has the most unique games, and ones that really make use of the platform, And Nintendo games are pretty dang good
OFC there is lots of crap on the wii, there is for every console, but i believe the Wii has the most "gems" out of the lot
Was looking in game shops today at shelves and thinking, "wheres the good games?", there was nothing there that stood out and said play me and the games people tell me to play have been out on the gamecube but changed ever so slightly.....mario.....mario kart......zelda? Where have I seen these before?
In fact, Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time are both in my top 5 of all time.
In fact, that "seen it before" argument is ridiculous. All of the headliners on the PS3 and 360 are continuations in a series as well!
Bad mouth every platform except the ones it wants to develop on to boost sales of said platform (and then its own games will benefit)
Coming up soon, Epic bad mouths the PS3/360
anyway, the Wii is also the first Nintendo console Ive owned, but the gamecube wasn't _terrible_ - but by the time i was interested in getting one it was past the point of having decent (fresh) games
Although its yet another Zelda/Mario/Metriod etc game, who cares, at least Nintendo keeps them somewhat fresh, and a bit innovative
they are developing for those 2 platforms, next up, i'd say more predicting the doom of PC gaming
i think they already done that.....
QFT.
There's too much emphasis on graphics and not a lot on substance these days. If you get both, then you're on to a real winner.
you mean list of things epic have killed ..... like UT3 :D . i understand that the wii is a bit boring after a bit and lack of affordable new games is a pain but its fun . epic must be run by numptys ... i mean look at UT3 , its a mess ..
ehmmm nail hit on the head if you ask me . well said kipman .... epic suck big sweaty things
true, but if we look at it like that epic has even less reason to bash it, because then its not even a competition to the plattforms they are releasing games for due to different target audience.
Its the marketing and the games that get released for it that make it kiddy and casual friendly, I mean if games like gear of war, ut3 and so on would be wii exclusive then pc/360/ps3 would be seen as the kiddy console and the wii as the serious gamers machine.
