We're big fans of the Penumbra games here in the bit-tech offices. The episodically released series is a real underground hit, packing some of the best graphics and physics we've seen in an FPS to date - so we don't imagine we're the only ones excited to see a third game in the series announced.

Released episodically, the Penumbra series has charted the adventures of Philip; a university lecturer with some severe daddy issues who becomes stranded in an underground mine while searching for his father. From there, things only get worse for Philip though and before he knows it there are aliens, vast conspiracies and abandoned scientific research centers all vying for his attention.

It may sound tired and dull, but the game thrives on a creepy atmosphere which emphasises flight over fight, using an incredibly inventive interface to make things all the more scary as players can interact fully with the world around them.

Penumbra: Requiem will be the third and latest installment in the series, sequel to Penumbra: Black Plague, charting Philip's continuing adventures with the Tuurngait infection.

Penumbra: Requiem is being released as a download-only expansion available only through the GamersGate online distribution system.

After the launch of Penumbra: Black Plague we realized that we still had some unfinished ideas for features and story line that we wanted to implement," said Jens Nilsson, co-founder of Frictional Games. "An expansion like this will be the perfect end to a series that has given both us and the fans so much.
