The new DS is just a concept right now - one which Nintendo isn't ready to unveil just yet.
Rumours have been circulating a lot over the past week that Nintendo, in an effort to dominate the hand-held market even more, would be unveiling a new, hi-res version of the Nintendo DS at E3 this year.
Well, sorry to rain on your parade, but Nintendo has now officially denied those rumours.
Issuing a
statement to IGN about the claims, which had originated from the boss of Enterbrain, Hirokazu Hamamura, Nintendo confirmed that they have no plans to unveil a new model at E3. This is in line with previous statements the Japanese developer made that it would only think of releasing a new model once the current model stopped selling.
"
We cannot comment on the specifics of what will be announced at E3, but at the very least there won't be anything like what Mr. Hamamura suggested, so would like to clearly deny this," said a Nintendo spokesperson. "
We're having a hard time understanding what kind of evidence [Mr. Hamamura] had for saying this."
Note that the company hasn't rubbished the idea of a DS3 with hi-res graphics, a removed GBA slot and a larger screen though, all of which were presumed to be key features in the new model - Nintendo is just saying they aren't showing it off
yet.
Which is your hand-held of choice? DS Lite? PSP? GP2x? Let us know in
the forums.
But its OK though.. .its all about the game play apparently ! MMMmmm Ok!
The reason I chose the PSP over the DS was a) adult games b) decent Hi-Res screen c) multimedia use.
Nintendo... Grow UP !
You just described this pretty much. It runs Linux too.

Tasty!
Making it by far the best handheld (personally the PSP has never interested me), I personally would like to see a kind of Mario Allstars on the DS or a Remastered Compilation of mario nes and snes games or even a NEW Super Mario Bros. 2.
that looks awesome, but i'm guessing by the name its all open source, which i love and all but is it going to get the attention of major developers?
They have hundreds of games out, by so few decent games available.
Contra 4 keeping me busy, heh.
Doesn't need major developers - its a succesor to the GP2X which has a thriving homebrew scene and inbuilt emulation for a ****ton of systems. Here's a handful of early examples for the GP2x -http://www.pdroms.de/files/gp2x/
the DS is going to lose its GBA slot first. maybe a few more metallic colours. then maybe make the hinge smaller and the screens closer together. then possibly a higher-res screen.
i laugh at that render. it's completely unlike anything nintendo would do- change the screen aspect ratio and make the 2 screens different sizes. made by a fanboy who doesn't even know his own beloved company at all.
Oh, and about that mockup picture. Why is that even up? Different size screens? How badly would that kill backwards compatibility with 'old' DS games?
For me I am getting a PSP, more useful to me. I have never really been into Nintendo games that much.
in short, it's a stupid idea.
want
I'm sure there's a Linux version of ideaDS emulator, chuck a ROM in that and go go go
Why do you think people bought the 360 when they had an xbox? or a ps3 when they had a ps2 (or from ps1 to ps2)
Eventually the DS will have to evolve, and a bigger screen is a nice way to do it, as long as your new DS works with old DS games (even with black bars) its not really hurt you - that will then give you access to the newer games that would inevitably come out
wow im surprissed that there are DS emulators, so they normally bypass the touch screen somehow? i think my minds set it would take them something big to make me not want it now :)
if a widescreen DS is coming, my bets are that it will be at least 5 years away. we'll see a bunch of new colours and an extra-slim version before that, as well.
as for the xbox360 and PS3, it has widescreen support because microsoft and sony were pushing high-res gameplay. they spent millions advertising how powerful their systems were. did you see some advertisement like that for the DS that made you think nintendo was also trying to do the same thing?
Never tried one myself as I have a real DS, but they are out there. I think you just use the mouse as a replacement for the touchcreen.
Even if they start selling a new version, developers are still free to program for the old DS, when enough people have the new one, developers will start to switch
The same sort of thing happens with every new console, its why backwards compatibility is important
I suspect Nintendo is working on a new DS, it may not be out really soon, but its coming
