Call of Duty 4 is now the number one multiplayer game on Xbox Live.

Call of Duty 4 is now the number one multiplayer game on Xbox Live.

Infinity Ward, developer of the fantastic Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, has revealed that nearly 1.3 million people play the game everyday - and that's just on Xbox Live.

The developer went on to describe the figures on other platforms, namely the PlayStation 3 and PC, as "monstrously huge" in a comment to Eurogamer.

"We've been hitting these numbers consistently for the past two-to-three months, Monday through Sunday. It's crazy," said Mark Rubin, producer for the game.

"That's just 360. There's even more on the other platforms [PS3 and PC], but we just don't have the same numbering system. Overall, even without the other consoles, we are beating the competition. PS3 numbers are monstrously huge. No other game has come close, either online current, or total unique users in a day."

The recent spurt in popularity has shifted Call of Duty 4 to pole position in terms of most online gamers, stealing the number one spot from the ubiquitous Halo 3.

Which game do you prefer of the two, or do you favour a different horse in this race? What did you think to Call of Duty 4, or are you the one person on the planet who hasn't played it yet? Let us know in the forums.

I'm afraid i may be the 'one'. On a side note how does this compare to there whining about the volumes of piracy on the PC. Are those "monstrously huge" numbers caused by people with dodgy copies?
Quote Woodstock 1st April 2008, 09:57
Hmmm looks like theres two already who havent played it

Neither have I, I downloaded the demo and the program wouldn't even start on my PC, and since my pc is massivly out of date I couldn't be bothered to work out why.

Barton core FTW

...*sigh* one day i'll get together enough money to replace it :)
Quote Shielder 1st April 2008, 10:13
Started playing it the other day. Absolutely amazing!

Of course, I've just moved from an XP2500 and an FX5600 to a Q6600 and an 8800GTS, so the difference in performance is bound to be huge... Save up the money and get it.

My PC is massively out of date, XP3200 and x800pro but i don't have the money right now to don anything about it (will do soon hopefully though)

Barton's forever!

the new update on Live is kinda cool, bomb kill cams and increased sniper accuracy.
its great that the maps usually make things pretty even class wise

Regarding aimboting and general cheating... have they fixed that? Haven't turned on the damn game in over 5 months...
Quote [USRF]Obiwan 1st April 2008, 12:39
Wait a minute.. There was a newsitem not so long ago, that 'they' where complaining about the sales of COD4 and piracy? And now they are saying the player count is uge and into the millions and counting. So wtf?

I play both on console and prefer COD4 far more. Both look totally beautiful, I find Halo has a slow kind of walking through water feel for me, far to dampened to my liking.

Trouble is though you can`t mute folk the same as Halo something I REALLY like.
Quote Redbeaver 1st April 2008, 14:36
CoD4 PC ftw!

no other multi comes close at the moment, except CS:S.... even BF2/2142 is dying......... (yea gj EA)

Although not a pile of crap, I do believe Halo is overly overrated. (Can you really fit two in a sentence?)

I've seen my friend play CoD4, and myself dying for a chance to play it on my own PC. (P4 and 5900Ultra won't cut it). Oh well, 2 more months of over time maybe I can get something in preparation for SC2 and to get on with Crysis.
Quote themax 1st April 2008, 16:33
Glad to hear CoD4 is doing so well online. I've rarely been able to get into an online shooter game the way I could with CoD4. Guess it's the way it feels. I can actually coordinate with a friend/group in CoD4 and do pretty well off. To me some degree of skill in CoD4 is required instead pray n' spray like some other games (not to knock it, that style does work well in some other titles but not in CoD4).

Hmmm, I bought this game a few months back after playing MP side of it at a LAN session, but I've yet to get around to playing it since, I must put it on one day.
Quote Cadillac Ferd 1st April 2008, 21:52
I'm pretty sure CoD4 has been on top of the usage statistics for a couple months now. Does anyone know if the number of unique users includes things like split-screen guests playing on Live? Anywho, I guess it's all a matter of personal preference I personally prefer Halo's multi-player and whether or not you believe the game is 'a pile of crap' or 'overrated' I still think that there's got to be something said for the infrastructure that Bungie has built up around the game.
Quote sub routine 2nd April 2008, 17:30
It definatley has a wealth of beautiful options that appear to enhance the system no end, replay director and map/ ingame editors appear masterful. I think the fact I never played loads of halo2 alienated me from the start and I never really got anywhere with it (I was crap at it and I mean REALLY crap) which really annoyed me about it to the point I never even got to use these systems.

I had only played pc multiplayers up to that point and it had me thinking it was me, until I played CoD4 it was like abreath of fresh air. Something I could pick up and play when I couldn`t be arsed booting up the Bf2 or the now love of my life Tf2.
Quote Lepermessiah 2nd April 2008, 18:05
COD4, overtaking halo as the most overrated game in gaming history, really, same gameplay as 01 cod, with an outdated engine that somehow won best graphcis at e3. Prrof hype and biased sites like IGN and gamespot drive sales. Gee, another small linear level with bad AI, unrealistic weapons that feel like bb guns, endless spawning enemies, and trigger points.
Quote Amon 2nd April 2008, 20:09
Not much variety in the way of popular shooters on the 360 to begin with, so CoD4 doesn't have any real competition for the genre. On the other hand, another popular record-breaking shooter from many years ago, Counter-Strike, had to compete with UT2003 and several games based on id's Tech 3 engine: Quake 3 Arena, MoH Allied Assault, Wolfenstein, Elite Force, Double Helix, Jedi Outcast and so forth.
Quote Shielder 3rd April 2008, 09:38
Leper, have you actually sat down and played it for more than half an hour? The improvement over CoD, CoD:UO, CoD2 and CoD3 is immense. The graphics are so much better. I've got all of them going on my new rig (apart from CoD3, that's on my Wii :D) and CoD4 is by far the best.

Yes, I have, I played the entire game, why would i comment if i never? It is the same as all other COD games, trash. The Ai, gaemplay is identical, name one thing different? Bad AI, small linear levels that lead u by the nose, can't jump over fences, endless spawning enemies, typical militray generric story, guns fell terribly unrealistic with little recoil. Graphics are better wow, GOTY, lol. Graphics are better, gamepkay has not changed since 01, crap game gets way to much hype then it deserves. You know gaming is becoming too much like the music industry when generic flub like COD4 sells like hot cakes and gets all the hype, when vastly superior games like crysis and stalker don't get the attention tey deserve.
Graphics are better then pther COd games, that is the only difference, and even then the graphics are dated, it is an old engine that handles little physics and only small areas.

I only asked because all too often people who are very vitriolic about a certain subject have never seen/experienced what they are complaining about.

I suppose you felt the same about the Doom series. All that was was an update to graphics with the same storyline. What about the UT series?

All FPS are basically the same. Only the packaging and general storyline are different. All you are doing is going around shooting bad guys. Yes, they may be aliens, WWI/II soldiers or modern day terrorists, but they are all basically the same gameplay.

You say it is an overhyped game series, why are so many playing it again and again if it is rubbish? You mightn't like it, but plenty of other people do. Have we been taken in by the hype and conditioned into thinking that the game is great or do we simply enjoy playing it?

Just my 2p.

All FPS are not the same, see stalker, bioshock. Yes, doom and UT3 suck as well, that is well known isn't it?

Not all FPS'a have small levels that are on rails, trigger points, bad AI, endless spawning enemies, crap guns like COD4. All FPS are the same shows u don't know what a good FPS is.
there are devs out there that are actually trying to do different things and push the envelope, CODs infinity Ward are not one of them, neither is Epic, they are narrow minded, and in interviews when they say open ended gameplay is just a fad and not gonna last, when open ended games have been around for over a decade, you know what their intentions are.
Quote Shielder 3rd April 2008, 15:57
If they suck, why do so many people play them?

I will admit, I've never played Stalker or Bioshock. Maybe I'll get one of them and see what you're talking about. Which one would you recommend?

Are u dumb enough to think Popularity = quality? Consoles are for the mass market, dumbed down for the average idiot to play. See the music industry too see what popularity means. Main stream gamers like simple easy to play games, that is what console games are. console are the worst thing to ever hapopen to gaming, now it is turning itno the music industry, style over substance. Thank God for PC's.

Isn't this a little uncalled for?

As primarily a PC gamer I have played several FPS, including COD4 and Bioshock, and I must say in the single player aspect they have all tended to follow the same basic formula, as Shielder said. The numbers quoted by the OP are, I would imagine, primarily for multiplayer and most of your comments seem to be related to the single player aspect (AI, linear levels, etc.) and we all know that single and multiplayer versions of the same game are poles apart.

Multiplayer games are a dime a dozen, and they are the definition of doing nothing new. Online gaming is another aspect of gaming that needs serious change and innovation. Stalker is far from the standard FPS, neither is bioshock, it is near as much RPG.
