Availability of Nvidia's GeForce 9800 GX2 is "OK" after a few days on the market. Either the card isn't selling brilliantly, or there is enough stock to keep up with demand.

In less than a week since launch, Nvidia's GeForce 9800 GX2 has already dropped in price by almost 10 percent at some of the UK's top online retailers.

On launch day, the GeForce 9800 GX2 was sitting around the £435 (inc. VAT) mark and today, a few partner cards are sitting below the £400 mark.

Scan appears to be the retailer with the best range of products in stock, and also the lowest average price (discounting those with just one product in stock) at £404.78 including VAT. What's more, four of the cards that are available on Scan are currently sitting under the £400 mark and that includes the XFX card that we reviewed on launch day.

CCL, on the other hand, comes up trumps with the lowest-priced card in stock – BFG Tech's GeForce 9800 GX2, priced at an attractive £374.99 (inc. VAT). Ebuyer is listing Point of View's card at £360.00, but sadly the retailer has no stock available yet.

Overclockers UK is doing its usual with a massively cut-priced "OcUK" version that comes in a white box with just a one year warranty – this sits at a pretty incredible £352.49 (inc. VAT). Of course, it's not a full retail product and the warranty is very short, but almost 28 percent of polled bit-tech forum members are just after the card in a white box.

Does this make the card more attractive than, say, a pair of cheaper GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB cards, or even a pair of GeForce 8800 GTs? Discuss in the forums.

Interesting to see that Scan is always a little bit cheaper than overclockers these days. Used to be the opposite way round in the past to be honest.

I think DABS has lost its way with their prices, although they often have free delivery weekends on offer, so I guess thats a tenner saved if you want to wait the 3 days for delivery.

Brand however is important to me, so kudos again to Scan for stocking the most brands. BFG Tech for the win in my book, but Im not in the market for this card. (Two 800 GTS 512's give equal performance for less money) . The 9800GTX is released March 25th, and Im curious to see how that one will perform (and cost)

I smell many plans, Sell 8800GTX WC, buy 9800GX 2, wait for a Watercooled version and use the BFG trade up program :D

Ohhh yeah!

CCL have the BFG cheaper than all the places listed http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=21033&category_id=681 :)

Thanks, I forgot about CCL - I've included them now!

Damn that was fast. Did that few people actually buy this?

Theres always a little price gouging at launch before prices settle.

I remember when I got my 8800GTX WC, the price went up about a week after I got mine.

because it's such a wonderful card!

i predict we see more 9800Gx2 price drops, unless nVidia gets better drivers that enables this less than one week product to overtake one and half year old G80 GTX in SLi.

I bet those few are mighty peed off.

well just like their first attempt at a dual gpu card that flopped this for the most part flopped as well, the price to performance was horrid so they had no choice but to lower the price to make it remotely worth buying.
Quote Amon 22nd March 2008, 05:09
It could just be an indication of flat-lining demand for the product after the initial wave of hardcore enthusiast buyers. Or to prevent that from happening.
Quote Indybird 22nd March 2008, 06:03
Any good deals in the US?
I really want to but one of these but I just cant justify spending $600 on a graphics card (no matter how good it is).

Even the cheapest price in the UK seems to be $750, so go ahead, turn the knife in the wound and then add some salt with your US-prices :D
Quote salesman 22nd March 2008, 14:51
i didnt read any of the other comments but its still $599 on newegg

Seems like a lazy soultion instead of devloping a new GPU just sticking two on the same card presumably by using an internal PCI-E bus and sli like they did before. They didn't even get it all on one PCB this time.
Quote HourBeforeDawn 22nd March 2008, 17:08
^^^ agreed another flop by nVidia in my opinion.

nVidia never did. THe 7900/50 GX2 also had 2 PCBs, but the cores weren't facing eachother. This is IMO a better solution. The easiest though would be to have asingle PCB. But this makes the dual slot space (that the card will obviously take up anyway) far better used.
Quote CowBlazed 23rd March 2008, 20:00
Don't see how it really matters which way is better when they both overheat. Card shouldn't have even launched if the cooling can't keep the temperatures in check, they should take a page from AMD's 3870 X2 to see how this should actually be done.
Quote HourBeforeDawn 24th March 2008, 04:59
agreed you think from the first dual gpu flop that nvidia had that they would have shifted to one PCB board but no... but hey when has nVidia ever been smart enough to learn from their past mistakes....
Quote roman3 24th March 2008, 12:03
hello everyone, can you help??? always been an ATI person and am about to build a new system with nvidia........

whigh brand for a 9800 gx2 would you reckon is the best??

thanx
Quote wuyanxu 24th March 2008, 17:48
BFG or eVGA. XFX seems cheap, but i don't think their RMA service is as good as BFG's
Quote Andy Mc 25th March 2008, 06:46
I really don't see the pont in this card, unless say you want to go quad SLi. Both the 9600 and now the 9800 GX2 have been a big disappointment for me, as they are both beaten by an older card. Could Nvidia be leveling out when it comes to performance? They are top of the tree at the moment and it doesn't seem like ATI/AMD is currently in a position to catch up, yet.
